I think at times it's due to him going up high trying to slow down the backrower and wait for help, but gets bumped off / pushed back... like those JT tackles where he gets pushed back front on but drags his hands with him and sometimes the ball comes out with him.

Leads to a lot of missed tackles in the stat sheet though.

He's not alone in that stat though with Ezra, Foran, Keary, Chad and Brooks missing more tackles than him last year.

Reynolds is the surprise packet... the "apparently" injury prone little general completes his tackles at near 90% over the course of his career. He needs to be doing a defensive clinic with the other halves in the team to teach them how to make defensive reads.

I agree 100% with you... I think the saying nowadays is "not all missed tackles are the same".

As you say you don't make it to origin and defend in the middle if you can't make a tackle.

I'm just pointing out that Bhunt has been a leading missed tackler since his last time at the Broncos, but he's racked up over 300 games at this point... so it's not like it's something new to the league or something that has popped up out of nowhere.

I think missed tackles is an overrated stat... I think Mitch Kenny led the league in missed tackles last year, but I doubt very much that people think he's a shit defender or that it's some weakness teams can exploit.

It's more likely that he throws his body in front only to get pushed back, but it's enough for help to arrive and finish off the tackle

They really need to break the missed tackle into like two or three categories.

Ineffective Tackle - you made contact and effectively slowed / stopped the player until they were properly tackled.

Missed Tackle - they ran right fucking by you (hands on them or not) - this one always gets me - if you don't get a hand on them because they burned you - you don't get a missed tackle... travesty!.

With the focus these days on going high and stopping momentum, but keeping them upright to slow things down - it's sometimes tricky for smaller blokes to do that and wrap them up neatly 1:1.

Yea I think everyone here is guilty of getting a bit too excited. We played well, but the Titans were crap. The 6 penelties in a row also really helped us early.

the "team" worked together well yesterday - there was very rarely one on one misses, as there was very rarely only one in the tackle. This is the mentality with QLD so I do not think Hunt will be a liability in defence any more than any other smallish player - he definitely plays above his weight which is why he can miss sometimes as works so bloody hard

Yes, when Ezra races down the field chasing a kick, gets a hand on the fullback, slowing him down, and then the next defender arrives and puts him on the ground, that's counted as a missed tackle. He did that all the time.

I liked that we scored in a number of different ways. We just took whatever the opposition was giving us, and it just so happened that the opposition was defending like U12's... but we put them to the sword because of it.

It's what storm and penrith do... they don't care how they get them and they won't hesitate to pile the points on.

Last year we were saying that we are too reliant on Walsh, which meant we were reliant on block plays and sweeping plays to get us tries.

We were also reliant on Reynolds making the right decisions and creating tries... like short kicks behind instead of going out the back to Reece.

On the weekend we scored a try from dummy half, a wrap-around from dummy half with the crash ball offloading, a crash ball to BTK, 2x by competing on cross field kicks... and maybe only 3-4 from block plays (Shiba, Mariner, Hoeter and Latrell) depending on how you want to define them.

I think that's a good sign of a team not caring about the flashy stuff and just doing what's needed to get the points, but also embracing multiple points of attack.

Much harder to shut a team down when there are threats across the field and all the way through to kicks on last tackle.

Thinking about it we may not have had too many settlers to reset our position... that was a big annoyance to me where we kept resetting only to throw one block play at them across a set of six. Sometimes we would end up going settler on settler only for the ball to get shut down as soon as it went near Ezra or Walsh... it looked so slow and there was so much pressure on Ezra and Walsh.

I would need to go back and keep track of it, but attacking plays on attacking plays can really stretch the defence.

It's something Parra love to do... might be something to look out for and whether it's some Barrett influence coming through.

Also link play through the middle didn't feel noticeable which could mean they were getting it through pretty efficiently. BTK was particularly impressive with his ball playing.

We were ridiculously efficient inside the 20m yesterday.. it was clinical when we got down there

I'm inclined to agree. Not sure how good we are yet but the signs are the titans might struggle this year.
We'll know more once we get our full team on the park and play a few premiership fixtures against the more fancied teams.
For now I'm happy with that effort but as they say one swallow doesn't make a summer or in our case one game doesn't make a season.

The concerning thing for me is how many of your main squad was on the field for that. You guys should have at least been competitive but it was seriously like men against boys.

Exactly this - imagine getting spanked by our reserve side boys. Des has got a ton of problems to work out.

Rewatched the game today, I liked how organised we were in D, we actually stuck with our systems pretty well and we looked particularly good on finding our fronts and getting the knees up for a quick PTB.
I would say we have improved significantly in those 2 areas.

I noticed BTK finding his front in both games so far and Willison during the All Stars game as well.

They may have been doing it last year, but it could also be a sign of things to come.

I think the biggest tell for it might be Haas... if he's actively trying to get down and find his front rather than pushing for those post contact meters then we might be in for a dramatic change in hitups and speed of play this year.

It's harder to tell with guys like Kobe and Piakura because they like to get between defenders already... it didn't seem like Kobe was getting smashed yesterday though... mightve been titans poor defence, but could be a good sign for Kobe because it was in his game last year unless he was coming off a quick ptb

I agree on the D - more discipline and communication meant less one on one errors
