Difference being that we've got our next guys lined up in Ezra, Black and Walsh.

I've included Walsh, because I see him doing some heavy lifting around that space, whilst still playing fullback.

It will be a shock to the system for us though... we will have had Reynolds for at least 4yr and then Bhunt for 2yr... so two super experienced guys leading the team around and letting everyone else do their jobs.

Someone else will need to take that on after they finish up.

Hoping Barrett can upskill our halves coming through and it will be interesting to see how Coby develops in Qcup this year

Yep, that was kind of my point. Our replacements don't lack for talent and potential, but it's a MASSIVE experience gap, not to mention two very talismanic type players that we'll have to replace, and it almost wouldn't matter who we had on our books, those would still be huge shoes to fill.

I’ve always rated Brown, but this deal is insane from the Knights.

This working is completely dependent on not only Ponga staying, but at least having a good hooker and a decent halfback. Everyone in those positions at the Knights aren’t that (I still rate Gamble the best)

I also see Dyl getting into a lot of trouble up there. He’s already been in hot water in Sydney, but Newcastle is quite different with the one-team town aspect and everyone knowing everyone. Joey got away with it (sort of) because it was a different time and they were successful.

This will blow up by the 4th year at the absolute latest

I'd only be semi comfortable giving a 10 year contract to the best of the best type of player. Johns, Lockyer, Smith, Thurston, Slater. Possibly Cleary and Cronk. Benji Marshall, if I was a perpetually middling club and wanted to put some bums on seats. DCE worked out fairly well but I'd still wouldn't have been happy at the time.
Maybe they are expecting the salary cap to double in the next few years? That's a huuuuge gamble if it just continues to rise at its current pace.

The gap between the two roles is fairly narrow these days. In Brown's case he's played a lot of both roles in the last 18 months with Moses out so frequently, and with that much money outlaid on him, they're going to need him to have his hands on the ball a LOT to make it worthwhile, regardless of what number he wears, so I don't think the comparison is totally unfair.

IMO the gap between the two has widened more recently, in that the controlling aspect of the game has become much more important, and it has exposed the lack of players capable of that aspect.

Brown may have been forced to play in that role before, but he has absolutely sucked at it.

I don't disagree that he's been mediocre in that role, I'm simply saying comparing him to others in that role in the context of the thread is fair enough given he's played plenty of games there already, and will likely be playing more of it at Newcastle.
