THE EX Kevin Walters

I don't think fans remember just how bad things were when Kevie took over. Not only was the playing roster a mess but the club didn't have a CEO because Melbourne were dragging their heels over Donaghy.

It was a turbulent time for the club. Andrew McCullough, Joe Ofahengaue and Jack Bird were all released from their contracts and it was no secret that Walters didn't want Matt Lodge around.

Walters was trying to make the best of the situation, but with so many young players it was difficult to do. Especially when these young players were publically meeting with opposition clubs to help drive up their prices.

Granted, Walters could have handled things better. The talk heading into 2021 was that the Broncos would have a halves pairing of Milford and Dearden. However at the 11th hour after some patchy trial form, Walters opted for Milford and Croft. This would come back to hurt the Broncos as Brodie bombed what would have been the match winning try in a huge upset against Parramatta.

Meanwhile because the NRL and QRL seasons aren't aligned, Dearden wouldn't get an opportunity to press his claims until Round 2. Tom scored two tries against Burleigh in a big win for Souths Logan. The word from Tom's camp is that unless he was considered for NRL, he'd request his release.

Walters compromised and initially picked him off the bench before giving him a start. It was really poor business all-round and Tom played the worst football of his career. That was his audition and with the Broncos trying to manage their salary cap and figure out who's coming and who's going, allowed Tommy to take his deal up with North Queensland.

Tom would continue to play poorly up at the Cowboys until a Round 24 win against the Dragons. Since then he's gone from strength to strength and he's done well to make the decision look poor in hindsight. However I think it's important to remember the context and that it was his camp that brought this ahead.

They try to paint themselves like the Broncos threw him to the curb when they already had one foot planted firmly out the door.
Agree... I think Kevvie's plan was to send Dearden back to qcup just to let him develop his game outside of the media spotlight... and in hindsight that probably would've been the right plan for him given he didnt hit the ground running in Nth Qld either.

To date Tom has only played 10 qcup games and 4 of those were in 2021... so he played 5 Qcup games before Seibold debuted him at 18 in 2019 and then 1 more cup game in the 2020 covid season before he made him the number 1 half.

Seibold damn near killed his career by throwing him into first grade so early and so young, whilst surrounding him with the youngest and most inexperienced team in the comp.

He basically went from Meninga/Colts to NRL... so he was having to learn how to play against men in the NRL... and that period of NRL was the most lopsided in history when they first brought six agains in.

It's lucky that cows stuck by him, because a fair chunk of his record losing streak occurred whilst he was up in Nth Qld... and they had guys like Duffy coming through that they could've quite easily pivoted to.. if he hadn't pulled it together by the end of 2021 his career could've been just about done then and there.

He played #6 at Nth Qld on the left .
Played #7 at Broncos on the right . Very different tactics and roles within the teams .

Have I slept on Kevvies podcast for too long because I hate Dobbo? It looks like he gets all of the guests that I want to hear from (current/ex broncos). It might be off season podcast.

I've been listening to all the interviews he does with people since someone posted the Milf one on here.

They're always a great listen, even if you think you're not that interested in the person he's interviewing.

Fortunately Dobbo doesn't get too involved when it's an interview.

Some of Dobbo questions in the Reyno ones were weird. The marriage comment was bizarre.

Dobbo continually saying that Wayne saved Reyno's marriage like it was his story to tell, and that Wayne is some kind of god was absolutely mental.

Wayne might have helped Adam personally, but to suggest that he was solely responsible for Reyno's relationship reconciliation is one of the weirdest things I've ever heard. And he said it multiple times, like 8 or so. Wayne is a home-wrecking adulterer, he aint saving any marriages.

The podcast is tolerable when Dobbo is not there.

Kevvy had to be corrected multiple times throughout. He thought that we were up at HT in the 23 GF, also got numerous years and scores wrong when talking about other games. But overall he looks to be visibly uncomfortable the days that Dobbo is there shouting over everyone.

As much as I've always disliked Kevvie as a first grade coach, I think he can suit the style needed for a rep coach. His selections when coaching QLD from memory were pretty horrific, ideally he gets Cam Smith in there to help him with selecting the side.

I wonder what a Kevie Kangeroos squad looks like. Does he get to select or will it be like origin where he had to kneel to the selectors?

SEN flagged the selectors this morning.

Joey, Lockyer, two others and Vlando... and obviously Kevvie would be part of it as well.

No idea why Vlando is there... must be a tax write off of some sort
