Eli Katoa - Head Injury Discussion

I wonder if it might make players think twice about representing Tonga as well. They aren't going great anyway and if there is a feeling you aren't being taken care of either, might see players going back to Aus / NZ.

Basically, there will probably be many and varied ramifications for this.

How he was even allowed to play after that clash in the warm-up, that's straight up negligence.

Even if he was insisting he was fine to play etc, he should have been pulled regardless. Needing surgery to have fluid drained from the brain is no ****ing joke.

wtf was Leha doing during the warm up. Katoa already caught the ball and leha still jumps up leading with a shoulder.

It just does not make sense. I hate the Storm but fully support them if they are livid over this.

That Does Not Make Sense.gif

and wtf was Hopoate going in that hard on Katoa during WARMUP? Do they have prior beef?

It didn`t look intentional .
It was probably that they were both taking it a bit easy that it happened .

Hopoate`s shoulder hit him right in the eye .He stayed down a long time . It was still very blood shot when the game started .

Pretty sad, but not all that surprising to see them starting to throw around the implication that in some way that Katoa made the call on himself staying on. "Players will always want to play for their countries". Blah, blah, blah.

"Samoan stars were asked for their thoughts ahead of the Pacific Championships final in Sydney this weekend, with the overarching message to doctors to make the tough calls and take any decisions away from players who would do anything to represent their club or country.

“I wasn’t there and I’m not sure what kind of state he was in during the match, but it’s heartbreaking to hear and it’s a plea to look after our players and to ultimately look after yourself,” Samoa halfback Jarome Luai said"

How can he "ultimately look after himself", Jarome, when he is already experiencing concussion, and that generally means levels of confusion. He was in no position to look after himself. WTAF.

That same sentiment was echoed a few times throughout this article. The suggestion that somehow, the player is in someway partly responsible also, is beyond shameful tbh.

yeah you can see his eyes basically rolling back in that first shot pre game

how the **** did that pass any test at all? brain bleed is pretty ****ing serious, his career could be over. at the very least that's going to take a long time mentally to come back from.

Tongan officials have reportedly said that they wouldn't have let Katoa play if they'd seen the TV footage of the head knock during the warm-up

Perhaps this might be the first symptom of the Island nations not all being fit for purpose.....with regards to the level of professionalism needed to play on the international stage?

Bring in a few ring-ins from the NRL sure........but the entire team and its management.....and indeed the culture of said
team management,
needs to adhere to the modern day game..... ie NRL's safety of its players, rather than what appears to be looking like some kind of .......tribal warfare
......win at all costs mentality.

I really don't understand what Hopoate was thinking. Calm down you clown, it's the fkn warm up.
Imagine how rabid we would all be if this was Haas or Willison. The poor guy may never play again, someone should be compensating him for that.

So…a team completely made up of NRL players, many of whom are among the best in the comp, an NRL head coach in charge with assistants all with NRL experience…is not fit for the task due to…unprofessionalism? But hey let’s not let facts get in the way of a bit of casual racism. Pull your head in.

This sort of thing has been creeping into NRL games, especially finals, before this. You see some players stumbling around but because it’s a big game, they are a as cleared to play on or not assessed.

This is just one of the most obvious ones with a really bad result to Katoa.

How often is Katoa going to be taking contested catches from a kick. Not sure why hoppa even needed to bother pressuring Katoa in a warmup. Didn’t even look like Hopoate went to check on him afterwards either.

Hopoate seems a bit of a space cadet

No way he can play after that warmup collision, brutal hit to the head. Who is the Tongan doctor? Some important questions to be worked out.

Surgery for a brain bleed is a career ender potentially.

No need for an ‘ism’

To be perfectly Orwell it’s actually an ‘ism’ to not hold them to the same standards.
