Ehen Petero moved we lost the best prop in the game...no hard feelings...when JFH left penrith best prop in the game...no hard feelings.

As most understand future if this club is Walsh and Mam...throw in Mozer

We are fine

Personally I dont understand the faux outrage.

Bloke was never Brisbane...QLD....good luck to him. he is NSW....move on

This isn't reality. There were extremely hard feelings, because the Broncos absolutely and utterly ****ed him over. Bringing him back was righting a wrong.
This 100%. It was atrocious what the club did to Petero. A real reflection on the shit management we had at the time.

Whatever you want to think or say about Haas, he has not bagged the club, and I will be shocked if he does in the future. It would not surprise me in the least to see him back here for a swansong.

Something still tells me there is more to the Payne stuff. His manager came out a few days ago and said IT IS ALL ONLY BEACUSE OF WAYNE. Wayne this, Wayne taht. Payne came out yesterday and said its purely because of family and did not mention Wayne once (I guess the club could have asked him not to say anything about Wayne) either way the stories aren’t matching up.

Its actually ironic because last year throughout the year I was thinking I wonder how Payne and his mrs survive off field.
Under Madge, the broncos do a lot of lets say ‘team bonding’ where they go on camps for a week or so i.e Newcastle mid-season, or they will go down to Sydney for a few extra days etc to try and build that bond between the group. But with Payne, he has his mrs, two young kids and also his 2 brothers. Thats 4 dependants. And when he is away for these extended periods of times, it would be the sole responsibility of his partner to look after all 4. Not easy. As we know, there wouldn’t be any help from grandparents etc so really his Mrs would take on a massive responsibility. .

Then you look at this year/end of last.. GF (longer then usual season), internationals, back to preseason, 2 week camp in Toowoomba, back for a couple of weeks, 2 weeks in England. It would certainly take a massive toll on him and his family. I have no doubts spending all this time away from his family has him concerned and forever checking in, thinking of them etc.
I genuinely think he’s just had enough of it. And we know Wayne is a players coach, so I dare say he wont be spending half the amount of time away from his family then what he currently is.

So in concussion, it’s a bit of an odd one. Is Madge going overboard with trying to ‘unite’ these boys? Is it possibly creating issues for players/family off field? And if so, he and the club will need to look at how they are doing things, because Payne isn’t the only young father in the squad, all these boys have family. We all know Reece has a young daughter and if he is experiencing similar, you dont want him to also walk away also.

On the Toowoomba camp, does anyone know what went down? Kev and Dobbo said on their first podcast for the year (so a few weeks ago now) that there was issues. Kev had a smirk and they left it at that. Obviously Billy would pass on all, so they would certainly know what went down. But it didn’t really get out in the media? Busted also said on his poddy yesterday that there were issues in Toowoomba.
Anyone know anything?
The bolded part explains the rest of the post😁

Exactly, he's considered a Broncos legend, but he had his peak years at Penrith because they thought having Sims and Clinton is better value.

I doubt they thought that ... Its just what we ended up with after ****ing up the Civo deal (i.e. not honouring the verbally agreed pay rise, possibly because of Bennett's policy of not paying props more than 350k)

Darren Lockyer has admitted he wasn't overly surprised that Payne Haas decided to leave the Broncos because he never got the sense he wanted to stick around long-term.

I still find it staggering that Wayne Bennett has chosen to flush his relationship with Lockyer over the 2018 sacking..

All these years later a guy who’s been in the business of hiring and firing people for 40 + years can’t rationalise a business decision that was made, rightly or wrongly, with the best interests of the club in mind..

Will be interesting to see how his tenure at Souths plays out now.

First time he was there he came with a succession plan in JD... the plan was always 3yrs and then JD takes over.

Doesn't seem like there's a succession plan in place this time around, so it all comes down to whether Wayne will leave or if he'll be pushed.

I'm assuming Ben Hornby is the succession plan, but they're still looking to extend Wayne and he doesn't seem to be indicating that he's leaving at any point

He's a bitter old man who demands loyalty from others even when he can't give it to them himself.

He's 78 years old ffs. Just crazy that he's still awake in meetings let alone coaching at first grade level .

Sydney hates us because we came into 'their' comp and wiped the floor for a while. Then Superleague and 'we' tried to destroy 'their' comp. Those old wounds are clear with any of the old guard, even the Queenslanders - Fatty is a prime example. It's ancient history to most of us, and well before some of us were even born, but it's very real.
Yeah I know some old BRL players that absolutely hate the Broncos for in their words destroying QLD Rugby league. Essentially it removed the money and pathways for the whole state and took the legitimacy out of our league so I can understand their feelings on it.

From memory it was actually Wayne who screwed him over as Wayne did a lot of blokes. He promised a better contract and never delivered. That was a very hard pill to swallow because Petro never wanted to go, but he did deserve more money. He also got the captaincy there from memory.

Yeah, I recall something similar. Apparently Petero was about to go to the Cows a while back but Bennett asked him to stay and basically promised him his next contract he'd be rewarded, but we lowballed and gave him a take it or leave it. Travesty.

For what it's worth, this is how I remember the Bennett/Civoniceiva/2007 recruitment.

In 2005, Bennett sacked Walters, Lazarus and Belcher and brought in a new support staff. This was all in a bid to help bring the Broncos back into prominence after a bitterly disappointing finish to the season. If things didn't change, Bennett knew his head would be on the chopping block so he was under a lot of pressure.

2006 happens and it's like clockwork. Broncos are one of the best teams in the competition, then they suffer another post-Origin slump.

Meanwhile over at Bondi, Politis makes the difficult decision of sacking Ricky Stuart after a disasterous 2006 season. Looking out for a replacement, Politis gets in touch with Bennett and Wayne agrees to join them in 2007 under one condition, the agreement doesn't leak to the media ahead of time.

Brisbane turn things around and 'somehow' the story leaks to the media during the finals. Not that it matters in a few weeks time because the Broncos win the premiership and the media moves on.

Except Broncos management didn't. They realise their interests and Bennett's don't 100% align and he can't be trusted.

Brisbane are riding high. They're expected to defend their crown and will be one of the team's to beat. Everything is looking great, than the World Club Challenge happens. Brisbane go down to St. Helens in a disappointing start to the season. This spooks Bennett and he experiments with the team.

Karmichal finds himself at halfback defending alongside a teenage Joel Moon. The Cowboys take full advantage and the Broncos find themselves trailing for the majority of the game before JT and Bowen combine to put the game beyond doubt.

So it goes and by the half-way point of the season, the Broncos find themselves sitting last on the ladder.

At the start of the year, Broncos management were in discussions with Civoniceiva's management but things went radio silent. The same thing happened to Tate and Carlaw among others. There's still a lot of conjecture around who was behind the move, but the players only started piecing things together when the Broncos announced the signings of Peter Wallace, Joel Clinton and the Sims family.

Meanwhile the relationship between Bennett and management became more hostile. This boiled over in public during the awards night when Cullen tried to surprise Bennett with an award and this upset Bennett because he made it clear he wanted the focus to be on the staff and players, not himself.

That all splinters off. Bennett tries to hold onto his job at the Broncos, management decides to go in another direction and you know the story from there.

As far as Civoniceiva specifically, I believe he was presented with a decent offer from the club, but it was the only the first offer and there was this expectation that Petero's management could counter-offer just to get some more money. Except talks broke down and it just so happened Penrith had lost their marquee prop among other big name players (Gower being the obvious) so they could make it worth his while.

This would come back to haunt the Broncos. In 2008, Hannant was in discussions with the Broncos when he was picked for Queensland and played alongside Civoniceiva. Ben spoke to Petero who suggested he should ask to be played like a rep player. Brisbane baulked at the deal while Canterbury pounced.

As far as Petero's peak goes, I'd say it went from 2003-2010. It wasn't like his game went to another level when he was in Penrith, it was just that the Broncos sorely missed him and had to compromise their forward stocks.

Yeah I know some old BRL players that absolutely hate the Broncos for in their words destroying QLD Rugby league.

BRL would have shrivelled the way it was .
No one was going to watch . The Reds and the Bullets were the hot ticket .

Broncos suddenly filling Lang Park every other weekend .
