CRICKET General Cricket Discussion

That's gotta be the last time we see Green for Australia for a while. I'd take Beau over him in all formats.

Green is not even close to being out biggest issue.

He actually kind of is. He is supposed to be the one to help transition from the old to the new. He right now needs to be dumped and there is a guy, Webster, who is outplaying him in just about every format. Green needs to be dropped but won't be because of reasons and this is the whole issue with the selectors.

They have refused to future proof the side so even when the next best blokes come in who are also over 30, they aren't good enough. The terrible batting is compounding the issue because it is making the bowlers all look better than they are. Look how bad Doggett was comparatively and then they pick an extremely underdone Richardson, who did well and then drop him.

But I digress. At the same time, you have Webster banging the door down and getting bit part opportunities. You've also got Jack Edwards and Liam Scott flying as all rounders and they can't get a look in. Meanwhile, Renshaw plays the house down in the WC compared to everyone else but Green, continually disappointing, still can't be dropped. Hardie also is clearly talent but can't make a squad now.

Pretty good chat on the Grade Cricketer podcast today with Alex Malcom (aka ‘safest voice in Australian cricket’ ) breaking down some of the reasons for our struggles in T20 cricket and our cricket more broadly
Just listening to this now. One thing that saddens me is the idea that T20 is taking over world cricket yet we still value Test Cricket the most. The idea that the Boxing Day test might not exist after 2031 just sucks. I went to the boxing day test in 2025. It was only 2 days but man that day 1 was the best day at the cricket I've ever had

Absolutely agree. Nothing will ever be better than test cricket but unfortunately, the world only cares about T20 everywhere other than Aus, Eng and Ind. They need to get other countries involved.

That said, it is exciting to watch Zim beat Aus and SL. It'll be great when these other nations start winning more regularly. The level between the test playing nations and associates has closed considerably.

Did I also read that because Aus has done so badly at this WC they are in serious danger of not making the Olympics?

Let's face it. Cricket doesn't belong in the Olympics.
Sadly everything is about money now. T20 cricket and the domination by Indian money is taking over the game. It will die as we know it very soon. I'll be heading to the 2031 boxing day test because it will likely not continue.

If the day comes where they've put a T20 on boxing day instead of a test, the that's probably the day I stop watching cricket.

I would say this is the lowest low in Aussie cricket but I rate the format as a joke to begin with.

Anyone can beat literally anyone, that was proven here. Zimbabwe in a Test match against Australia, are you kidding? It would be over in 3 days. In a T20, someone just has to have a night out.

I don't get how Smith didn't get a start after his BBL form, especially in sub-contential conditions. MMarsh is totally past it (did he really ever have 'it'?) as a player outside of franchise cricket played on decks with zero movement or spin, the bloke can't even roll his arm over anymore. Connolly went from destroying attacks at the beggining of the BBL to looking like his hero Shaun Marsh during the Indian series of 2011/12 where he averaged under 3.

I’m going to spruik another podcast here - the ABC Grandstand cricket podcast - because I think it raised a really interesting point today.

The host Corbin Middlemas mentioned how quickly public sentiment turns on this Australian cricket team on the rare occasions they don’t succeed, despite all the success they’ve had for a number of years.. His argument was the way the players and selectors have closed ranks around themselves in recent years and lacked a bit of transparency has eroded trust from cricket followers and the sense that it’s ’our team’

We turn on them because I don't think they appreciate how privileged they're to play for Australia. They often take the piss and treat the public like idiots. We know cricket and deserve more respect imo

I don't think it's unique just to this side. There's a lot of fans that are huge whingers. When Australia is dominating it's bad for the game and when they lose they are useless and everyone needs to be sacked. Gotta wonder if these people actually enjoy watching.

Since we won the T20 WC they haven't got this format right though. My expectations have been at rock bottom going into these tournaments the moment Marsh has been made captain. Thankfully Cummins will be captain in 2028 in Australia and will win it for us lol.

Women aren’t doing much better, losing the T20 part of the home series vs India.

The fact they play 95% white ball means they should be unbeatable.

Time for a few names to get dropped, if not have their card stamped.

Ellyse Perry is at that point now where she needs to retire, for her and the team’s sake. They won’t drop her, but she’s a passenger not scoring runs and doesn’t even bowl anymore

Darcie Brown is offering very little outside of getting carted and there’s plenty of good young pace bowlers like Hammo, Illingworth and Ainsworth they can invest in.

Wareham is in the side equally for her ability to hit as much as her bowling which says it all, and I’ve never rated Garth in short formats, and never as highly as everyone else seems to.

There’s a lot of ego in the setup preventing the best or most in-form team taking the field, meanwhile your Nicola Careys and Katie Macks of the world might get selected for squads but never get a run (anymore)

Following the World Cup failure, if we lose this series badly there needs to be a lot of change

That NRMA ad pisses me off. Why are they plating cricket in the dark!?!??! Arrrgghh
