Golf - Who Plays?

4 off the winner. 43 front but a dismal 56 back including 5 off the tee on one hole and 30cm ob on another. *****.

But tbh ill take a 43 front every day considering I started 1 with a 7. Just need to improve the back half.

Probs need to eat something as im playing, seem to die in the arse concentration wise on the back.

Also, 3rd round in a row with no 3 putts. 🥳
Awesome mate 👍

No 3 putts, FMD when can we watch you on TV?

Yeah that's tough. One hand on the trophy.
You're right about eating too. I usually take a bannana and apple.

6 pack of Northerns at the turn usually helps me.

I can't complain, I made some bad shot selections on the back that didn't help. You could go over the other 3 rounds and find a couple of shots that I'd do differently that would've made all the difference. 5 off the tee sucks but it's such a narrow par 3 that it's easy to go OB if you aren't dead straight, shit happens.

Take the positives and I'm miles ahead of where I was last club champs, so progress is progress.
Back to the grind.

hope you boys are hitting 'em well.

As they say, gotta lose one to win one.

Played a round at palmer coolum last Thursday, fun course but super tough for a rubbish player like myself. Hit 4 pars and a bunch of bogeys. Sadly I also hit a 10 and a bunch of 8s which never helps.

Still, I faired better than my mate who shot 133 (!) and lost probably a dozen balls, including 3 off the first tee lol.

slowly coming together. 27.0 hcp but it's been consistently dropping incrementally lately. absolutely blew it yesterday with a chance to go sub 90 for the first time off the blues. was on 74 with 3 to go and got a 9 on 16. shouldn't have checked the scorecard haha. but a 42 front with a 765 start and 5 pars in a row to finish the front and my chipping was absolute balls so i left a lot out there. realistically could've shot a 38 without being perfect. i'll take a 42 front though, very happy with that.

i'm knocking on the door.

also thinking about changing my club setup. getting a driving iron to fill the gap between my driver and 4i and getting a 52 and 56 to replace my 54, so would have a pw43, 48, 52, 56, 60.

Question for the regulars. I am an absolute hack, barely played any golf in my life but really want to get into this year now that it isn't so hot every day. I've got my set of clubs (Nothing great for starters), got myself a good bag for them etc.

Would you recommend just getting to the range as often as possible for a while and going through each club, or would you recommend getting out and playing 9/18 as often as possible?

I just know I'd be holding people up on the course because I am the most inconsistent hack but know eventually would need to get out on the course to improve.

Don't exactly have a friend(s) right now who are golfers either, so probably easier to just go swing at the range.

i'll have a round with you brother!
look my advice is, have a couple of range sessions and get a lesson or two so you can contain bad habits early. stuff like consistency of grip and stance. just to get a general feel, but apart from that, i think you have to play courses.

hitting off mats won't really teach you heaps as you won't get proper feedback off mats (you might think you're hitting them well but mats will give you way more bounce than proper turf - so you'll find you're chunking or thinning a lot more and going why? i was hitting them so well at the range).
plus, courses will have all sorts of variables you cannot replicate at a range or at a sim. all different sorts of lies (thick, thin, lush, sitting up on top of grass, bottom of rough, sand/dirt), ball above your feet, ball below your feet, being in the bunker, etc etc.

play some rounds and just pickup at 10 if you're still scrubbing away. you're allowed to suck, but suck fast. don't rush - that's the worst. but don't take 20 practice swings and then scrub it 15m. have 2-3 max, be ready to play your shot and away you go.

but seriously, i'll happily have a slap with you. i was in your shoes 3 years ago so I know exactly how you feel. had never played golf before, was worried about upsetting the wankers. **** em. and i wouldnt judge you either nor would i give unsolicited tips. not unless there was something very obvious and glaring that you could benefit from instantly.

Thats great advice, and makes a lot of sense. I feel comfortable enough with my irons based on when I last went for a hit, but the point about the surface you're hitting from is so valid. My drive is just comical. It's either great, or it's dribbling/shanked.

I'll go have a hit this weekend and ask what they do in the way of a lesson or 2, just to get around the basics, because I've never had any lessons so even the stuff I thought I was doing okay, I'm sure could be better.

Then I might take you up on your offer once I feel comfortable. Appreciate that mate!

I would say with lessons too, provide lots of feedback to whomever it is you go through. Some of them will try and get you to swing like Adam Scott and while that's great in an ideal world, most of us will have some sort of physical element that will prevent us like swinging like the 1%'ers. But that doesn't mean you can't improve significantly. You just have to learn and understand what you are physically capable of and what you are capable of repeating on a consistent basis.
I have seen some ugly, ugly swings and mechanics on single digit handicappers. You do you.
And if you don't mesh with your instructor, find another one.

Let me know when mate. You don't have to wait until you're hitting flush with every club. Everyone's gotta start somewhere and it's best to rip the bandaid off.

Getting lessons did more for me than anything else, a lot more.

I play very casually now too but still am able to hit the ball straight and at least not make myself look silly out on the golf course, I would say it's about getting into the right habits.

yeah lessons for grip in particular are extremely useful. being OCD about your grip is important because it helps with repeatability. if you change your grip ever so slightly you're going to get wild variation in your dispersion and you'll be frustrated as hell.

aaaand just ordered some sm11 vokeys,
52.08F
56.10S
and a titleist U505 3i.
a cool 1k.

My go to for grip. It works well. I bought the white glove and marked it the same.
Im down to 11 now.
Def get lessons before you get ingrained habits. You'll be paying for lessons to indo bad habits if you don't.
Nice mate, what was your hcp trajectory the last 12 months?
