Golf - Who Plays?

That's some improvement. What did you make inroads on in particular?
Swing improvement making sure my hands weren't outside my eye-line with my irons.
Light grip so wrists can hinge and not trying to hit it too hard.
Tactics, taking my medicine from trouble trying not to make a mistake on a mistake.
When recovering from a bad drive I try to take any trouble out of play. Like if my way to the green involves water or a bunker lay up chip on and try and make a one putt but that usually takes double bogey off the table.
I aim to get my chips inside 10 feet radius. Practice a lot of puts from 10 feet.

yeah nice. i'm definitely getting better at taking my medicine and squaring it out or just advancing it a reasonable amount without getting myself into trouble. there's still a couple of situations where i bite off more than I can chew but I think that'll come in time (hopefully soon). i think the next stage for me is going ok right, i'm 150 out but if don't hit this clean i'm in the bunker/in a bad spot. need to learn to either hit a 9i and leave it 20 shot and chip it on or club down and carry a bit further even if it means i'm at the back of the green.

chipping definitely still a work in progress. putting is getting much better though, distance control is starting to come into play so most of my long putts now will end up as 2's. still the odd 3 though where i can it within 2-3m's but puss it and let the break take hold.

yeah lessons for grip in particular are extremely useful. being OCD about your grip is important because it helps with repeatability. if you change your grip ever so slightly you're going to get wild variation in your dispersion and you'll be frustrated as hell.
For me grip and stance/setup end up being the most important thing.

For my grip I was originally taught as a kid/teenager to do the interlock... and that worked for a long time, but a couple years back I just could not hit my driver straight... everything sliced or they went straight as an arrow but 30m wide of where I'm aiming... prior to that I was a straight down the fairway, 230-250m and out driving actual good players.

On the range I was middling them, but they would spray miles right. I realised I could see my hands were way out of whack at contact and I came to the conclusion that interlocking at the start was me basically manufacturing my hands in the setup... I was forcing them to be where I wanted them to be, but during the actual swing they rotate to being this weird fully open shape at my actual contact (like I'm playing a square drive in cricket) and it was like the interlocking was forcing my hands to be where they arent naturally and my right hand was trailing from the original setup.

I just changed it up to a stock standard baseball grip and started nailing them down the middle again...like literally on the first shot that I did with it.

Actually insane how important grip is.

Yeah I am not a great driver as I'm a bit inconsistent on strike but I did have a bit of a eureka moment recently with my grip on my driver. I found my left wrist was too underneath/on the side and (making the educated guess) this caused my wrists to twist on the downswing. Started concentrating on always being able to see two knuckles on my left hand and it's bearing some fruit and I'm slicing significantly less. Just have to be consistent with it as a pre-setup thing. That and always pointing the club face to the target of where I wanna go.

My stance is a bit errr as my right knee is totally cooked so rotating into it can be sus. I have a somewhat staggered stance with my right foot being a little bit behind my left (which is somewhat normal anyway as you shouldn't have completely square feet from what i've read - correct me if i'm wrong good players on this forum) but nothing too dramatic. maybe 1/3 of a shoe size back comparative to my left. Do need to work on flaring my feet a bit more too just to create a bit more room for rotation but one thing at a time.

One other bit of advice I saw just recently that seemed a bit of a eureka moment was how my legs are supposed to do the rotating rather than my hips.

I've not had a lot of lessons over my life... mainly just watching YouTube and things and then taking that to the course so the whole rotating aspect to me was just rotating around your spine and I was just thinking you do that through your hips or whatever.

The video showed me that youre meant to use your legs like pistons.

So you have your legs bent at the setup and you start your backswing by straightening your right knee and dropping your left knee... this creates the rotation and gives you the platform to push through your right foot on the downswing at which point you're basically just doing the opposite to create the rotation.

So focussing on that aspect in my setup and rotating with my legs going up and down like pistons, kept my spine super straight and it felt really natural and easy to actually get power in my downswing.

I always felt like I couldn't actually get power in my downswing because it felt like my body ended up way out of position trying to force the rotation (ie trying to hit it too hard) and it's likely because my legs were super stiff and Im basically just trying to rotate from my hips up... which would mean I have zero flexibility to really extend on the backswing, but getting my legs working properly feels much easier to rotate around

I've been playing for 4 or 5 years now. Fortunately for myself I had played cricket for all my life so there was an element of second hand nature and I started at a decent level to begin with. Your swing slowly evolves. Range is important to get your skill and technique up (surfaces play a massive part). Do what works and what makes you comfortable. You aren't going to end up on the tour, don't sweat it. For me a really fun component of Golf is teaching yourself the technical parts so I am not the biggest proponent of golf lessons, but each to there own. People on Golf courses are usually pretty good, the anxiety around pace is mostly in your head anyway. Most people who have found time to get on the golf course don't have to many other places to be. If they are really up your ass, let them go through. As long as you are being reasonable and considerate, most people understand that everyone has to start somewhere. If its a real issue there are plenty of shitty golf courses around to get the confidence up. Unfortunately for myself I don't find to much time to get on the course but you can only get so good playing at the range. Very big difference between piping your shots on the range and knowing how to get around a golf course. You could have 2 blokes at the range, one who looks the part but not much chop on the course and the other who is a bit rough around the edges but knows his way around a golf course. Get your skills up predominantly at the range first but after that get on the course as much as possible. Find some mates to go with, always makes it more enjoyable. I would happily go with you but I don't find the time for a couple hours to go to golf, and I find usually when I do my first choice option isn't to run to the course. Plenty of people love to bond over golf so you will find people to play with over time. If not don't stress, there is plenty of people out there that chuck the airpods in and just make there way around the course by themselves.

Played a 36 hole comp yesty. Finished 3rd and 18th over r1 and r2. Sadly they didn't do a combined overall nett over the two rounds as I think we wouldve finished tied for 1st with 3 under nett.
Was great fun tho. Loved the fact that as we were nearing the end of the first we still had another 18 to go. I'd play all day everyday if I could haha.

Hands are a bit sore today though!

shot a 95 over the weekend. still so many bad holes but just getting better at course management and taking my medicine. there's so much more in the tank.

down to 26.6, my lowest ever 🥳

also, clubs arrived. 🥳

can't wait to test the Driving Iron out. SEND ITTTTTTTT

I'm a really good tennis player but am far too gay to be good at golf

*Kotoni Staggs has entered the chat.
Kotoni lives just around the corner from me and I keep seeing him rolling around on his electric bike. Sometimes shirtless. The internal struggle that I go through each time not to yell out something seriously unhinged and sexual must not be taken lightly

no way brother, shafts and balls, it's the perfect homo sport. you can dress like a total wanker too and no one blinks an eye.
I'm very straight passing but these hips honey, they've got some movement. So once I go for a swing the jig is up
