Q-CUP 2026 Queensland Cup Discussion

In Badel's exclusive he does breakdown the funding the current QLD Cup receives, then says:

"To successfully achieve a Queensland Super League, the mooted 12 teams would require direct funding from the NRL."

That's a real quality breakdown.

Badel has quoted some anonymus sources

one QRL source said:

“They are clearly not happy with how the QRL is running the game,”

“But who is going to run the rebel comp if the NRL won’t fund it?”

A Queensland Cup club executive, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed talks for a breakaway league have taken place.

“Clubs are taking the matter into their own hands,” he said.

“We would want the NRL to govern a Queensland Super League competition.

“They provide most of the funding to the QRL anyway.

“This is not a move that will be taken lightly but the QRL is running dead on the future of the competition.

“The QRL set up a working group last October and have now disbanded that group with nothing to show for their work.

“Hard decisions need to be made and the QRL won’t make them.

“The QRL is doing rugby league a disservice in Queensland.

“The Hostplus Cup has to stay a second-tier comp and it can do that with the NRL clubs fielding teams.

“If the QRL keeps the doors closed to the NRL clubs, they increase the risk of an NRL reserve grade reforming.

“That will mean the Hostplus Cup is history because it will be a third-tier league – and there will be no funding to fly teams around the state.

“The QRL needs to have the Cowboys, Titans, Dolphins and Broncos in the Queensland Cup to safeguard the competition for the long term.

“If an NRL reserve grade starts up, the Queensland Cup is essentially dead.”

That's a real quality breakdown.

This was his actual breakdown:

The NRL currently provides $7.5 million annually to the QRL to help fund the Hostplus Cup. The QRL provides a further $1.8m, plus an added $5.5m in travel and competition costs.

Each of the 15 Queensland Cup clubs receives around $650,000 in funding. The Hostplus Cup salary cap this season for each team is $420,000.

the line I quoted was just where he said the funding would need to come from for a breakaway comp to get off the ground

Nio has withdrawn from the Seagulls game this afternoon.

Tomorrow afternoon you can catch the Bears (Bradley, Coates, Rogers, Bryce, Mozer, Francis) against the ladder leading Falcons on Kayo/9Now.

Reinjured his shoulder last week and no Bryce he's hurt his ankle.

Statement from Canavan:

https://www.qrl.com.au/news/2026/06/06/statement-from-qrl-chair-brian-canavan/

The Queensland Rugby League (QRL) categorically rejects suggestions that a breakaway “Super League-style” competition is being established in Queensland.

Any rugby league competition played in Queensland is to be administered by the QRL as stated in the Australian Rugby League Members Agreement.

The QRL’s focus is on its elite competitions structure and pathways for senior and junior males and females, providing opportunities for aspirational players, coaches, match officials and administrators.

The scenario described in today’s reporting has not been discussed with the QRL and does not reflect any sanctioned process.

The QRL established a Statewide Competitions Working Group to consider the future structure of the Hostplus Cup, including the potential involvement of the Queensland-based NRL clubs.

That group continues its work and has a pre-scheduled meeting this week. We remain committed to that consultative process and to delivering the best outcome for clubs, players and fans across the state.

The QRL has been liaising with the ARLC for several months with the NRL represented on the Working Group.

The Hostplus Cup is one of the strongest second-tier competitions in the country, and the QRL will continue to work constructively with all stakeholders to protect and grow it.

The QRL will keep clubs informed of any changes to competition structure as and if they emerge.

Big Day today! First v 8th but if Bears win, they'll be back up to fourth.

Falcons have been huge this year, coming first with no NRL deal. They're just playing good team first football.

Bears got pantsed by the Magpies last week and down 18-0 came back but they won't like losing like that. Keen to see how they respond.

Bears bench was a highlight last week even with the loss, Mozer came on and scored a great hooker try, Francis had impact.

Hamilton's work with Coates is exquisite and I have been thinking about that scrum move all week as I drift off to sleep.

Bryce and Francis - just pick them next week. You want to see your kids making a difference in the lower grade and these two are

Great half of football really enjoyed that.

Bryce's ankle injury clearly not right, he wasn't supposed to play and had scans during the week but he's limping at times.

Lovely offload for the try. He has to watch over chasing though he came out and caused the gap that led to the McIndoe try. His enthusiasm can be his downfall but it's also what I love about him over the last three years.

Bears strength is Hamiliton to Coates and not sure they've connected once.

Mozer getting seven minutes at the end of the half hasn't led to much impact.

Francis more than handling the Falcons forwards with and without the ball. The simplicity to his game is his strength, his runs give you momentum and he doesn't miss tackles. We know he can score tries and attack like in Cyril and Meninga but that will come.

Burt: Do that again.

Francis run, standing PTB, Mozer, Hamilton and Gale drops it with the line open and a hole.

That's what Francis creates with simple run.

Mozer looking sharp

Francis off with 13 to go.

That’s 40 minutes.

Great defence from Falcons, Bears did everything that works- short balls for second rowers, kick for Coates and Mozer deception but can’t crack it.

That was an absolutely cracking game. Credit to the Falcons, Bears threw plenty at them.

Francis missed his first tackle in Cup in three games. But in attack easily the best PTB from a Bear, twice he played it standing up. Bears attack was just off.

Mozer's attack was off from the week before, but Falcons did a great job of shutting down anything the Bears threw at them. Falcons very well coached in defence; Hamilton couldn't get the ball to Coates and Mozer didn't get out at all.

Mozer ran twice for 11m down from 4 for 70m and a try against Souths.

Bryce another 80 minutes on his ankle, might need to save him from himself and give him a rest.
