2026 NRL General Discussion Thread

Man, that's heartbreaking to hear the journey he's gone on, and the way others have treated him because of his sexuality. What the **** is wrong with the world.

So glad the big man is still with us.
Plenty wrong with the world and getting worse. Just the small sample size on this forum you can see the bigots and ****wits first hand.

That Kane interview is a hard watch.

Glad that he didn’t go through with his plan and that the Rugby League community are reaching out to him after his interview.

It’s crazy that still today being gay can be seen as a bad thing. Even being metrosexual like Walsh is still seen as a bad thing by members of society but unfortunately society is still full of morons so don’t think that will change.

I imagine there are more Rugby League players that are gay but are afraid to come out.

I saw the announcement on Facebook this morning. The line they'd plucked from the interview was...

"I had 3 goals, to play NRL, buy my parents a house and then to top myself"

...and there were laugh reacts to it. I'll never understand what people get out of doing that.
Low iq ogres with no empathy. They walk among us in large numbers

And yet watch pundits who will use the Kane interview to talk about change being needed... and then in the next breath laugh and insult Walsh if he's got his nails painted... not realising they are reinforcing the behaviour that saw Kane keep his real self hidden and almost resulted in him taking his own life.

The 6 agains have seemed to calm down a bit...

Yeah noticed it the last few weeks. Tbh it happens most years. The first 3rd of every year they always go hard with shit and drop off gradually.

I watch alot of major sports. NBA, NFL and NRL and this happens all the time in all 3.

The NBA finals atm is like wrestling and contact constantly. Like a different sport. People just accept it is different and not whinge consistently unless you are flopping.

So you think games being pulled by six agains is a good thing? Look at the results lately because the whistle has been put away. It’s not hard to do this from the start.

What you mean pulled?

I agree. But better late then never if they are going to change it. The RLPA might actually have used their power.

Should be ruined, not pulled.

Weird though they were happy to persist so long and lose a lot of fans along the way. Some of them won’t come back easily with how bad the product has been this year and in 2021 the last time this farce was in full force.

For some reason they arent actually losing fans or viewers by their metrics. They wouldnt be doing it if they were. Maybe they are gaining younger viewers who don't know any better

I have noticed a difference lately. So whatever reason they did it whether their metrics are showing losses or the RLPA bullied them into changing I am all for it

I don’t believe their data for a second.

But nice to hear if it’s changing, I certainly won’t be coming back any time soon though.

I know. You let everybody know that every few days.

Oh by the way how is that bloke that was working for sportsbet still umpiring afl games seeing no other organisation other than the nrl would allow something so ridiculous.

It’s stupid and he should be sacked but totally different sport in that there are multiple umpires out on the field, unlike the nrl which has just the one. Additionally, he had an affiliation with a betting company but no known history of gambling addiction or debts.

Again though, terrible look but they did something about it as soon as they found out and he did what was asked. It didn’t take the news 7 years to come out and four years from knowing there’s an issue to doing something about it and going on registers, etc.

How you going with the FIFA question, still think fans around the world would be ok with their most decorated ref being a confirmed gambling addict past or present?

I generally think your arguments are ridiculous as you do mine but I do generally at least think you are mostly rationale. I’m surprised you and anyone else don’t have an issue with this in a sport bankrolled by gambling companies and also littered with cheating, countless questionable management decisions and laughable refereeing decisions.

Most fans in that sport wouldnt be ok with it but alot of fans are idiots. Its called fanatic They literally have to seperate them in parts of the world and release them at seperate times of thier stadiums because they would try and kill each other in the street. Fans are not rationale.

They literally allowed the man to be employed with sportsbet lol and wouldnt have done anything unless he was involved in that incident with Butters. That is worse imo.

You said I was rationale. I think it is actually "rationale" that a multi billion dollar industry that has so much tied up in gambling industries wouldnt put their dollars/brand at risk by saving one mans refereeing career. I think it is actually "not rationale" to think he was betting on nrl games like alot seem to think here and that they didnt investigate thoroughly. Which is more likely?

I agree it isnt the greatest look in the world but not what others seem to think it is. I choose to believe they did their due diligence in a matter this big. Its not just the NRL that would have been involved I would imagine either.

My overarching point is fans get irrational when it comes to do with anything with referees/umpires. You can not trust their views.

Can't trust the guy with the whistle's views either it turns out. Is he just incompetent or is he corrupt? And you choose to believe the NRL has done their due diligence, I don't and my view is way more backed up in their history of corruptness than yours. Also, you are right, if he has been involved in match fixing / tampering, then he is liable for fraud but this assumes the authorities were reported to at the time and that we will never know.

Bearing in mind that the Australian government itself is now in bed with the NRL, it definitely isn't in their interests to pursue this either. The fact any ref can still be reffing after being involved in serious gambling issues in any sport is a joke.

And you thinking that the AFL guys is worse is just hyperbole and probably bias in favour of your preferred sport. The current AFL administration is tracking down toward the NRL's level is a huge concern for most of us AFL fans, so what they are doing these days is not a good thing to be comparable to even in a best case scenario.

I dont know. I think they actually have a decent record when it comes to gambling issues and punishments if we isolate them. Its a very hard thing to catch. It is a slippery slope. Do you then have to ban players from gambling? They can influence results too.

This whole incompetent thing again is coming from fans with biases. It is wholely opinion and subjective. Just like it is their opinion that he has been the best referee in the game and imo he actually was at times. The last few years he has slipped in my ranking order.

What referee is actually liked? It is heavily swayed by what decisions your team gets. Thankless game. Maybe I just am less critical because I refereed for years and know how hard it is when you are actually in the middle. I quit because of abuse and I was refding kids. It is easy from the couch to judge decisions. Im much more critical of guys that imo get it wrong in that box.

I think it is more hard to referee these days too and their is more scrutiny. The game doesnt help them.

But I get your point on the look of it to a certain extent. I actually think if I was running the game I don't know how I am able to send him out there on Wednesday. This coming up now must have his mind scrambled. For his own mental health it might be better for him to take a break. Can't be easy all of it coming up right before one of the biggest games to referee of the year. No matter what.you think of him. Its probably better to have a clear mind. Maybe he doesnt care. I doubt it though.
