Ashley Klein is a corrupt dud

No mate. They did an investigation and found that he was betting on games so they continued to let him referee and even put him on State of Origin games.... I think tjats more the logical conclusion
well **** if he could have a burner account somewhere and give us the heads up, that'd be super.

I'm probably quite biased on the topic, having my own history with gambling addiction, but I'm not a fan of people calling for him to be sacked based on something in his past which he seems to have overcome (and good on him for that - its not easy). If his been cleared of any wrong doing, play on.

I wouldn't want my employer firing me for my own personal issues from years ago, especially if it hasn't been shown to affect my work.

The bigger problem imo is the NRL not having a blanket ban on all sports betting for everyone under their employment. Even as a public servant, there are activities I am not allowed participate in, or issues im not even allowed to comment on due to "poential" conflicts of interest. Same should go for sports (and not just for the people playing the game).

I think NFL staff, officials, etc. aren't allowed to bet on any sports... we should be implementing something like that - especially given how much more engrained gambling is over here.

It just looks shit, regardless of where he is at now with that addiction.

The top ref with a significant debt as a result of gambling, if only there was a way he could get out of it..

It's a farce. One of the worst run leagues in the world, without doubt.

Yeah the greedy prick

The fact people think they would just let a bloke continue refereeing if they found out he was rigging nrl games is insane. Why would they do that? They don't owe him a job for life.

From what I've read, its sounds like he lost $400k, not that he was in debt $400k. A big difference I think - and I assume something the NRL would have considered when he was investigated.

No mate its just called life. People struggle with addiction.

Was it a debt or was it money he spent? There is a difference. I was big into gambling a long time ago but never got into a gambling debt. It was all just money I pissed away.

What players have been discovered with $400k losses/debt?
None because they never tell anybody. Like most gambling addictions.

You really think none of these guys have gambling addictions? Go and listen to Luke Bateman talk about the gambling culture in rugby league. He was getting his mum to pay his mortgage because he was betting that much. He said that it was rife through the Raiders and especially in the younger blokes.

That's a lot of money to lose.

Clearly he had a significant problem.

My point is that for the NRL to do nothing about it is just a joke. Every time he makes a shocking decision from here on out he will be scrutinised more than most, for the reasons hanging over his head.

You can't fire someone if you can't prove they broke the rules. Until such time the NRL has a policy that no staff can gamble, he would rightfully take them to court and win. It's just a nonsense take.

The only people who are going to infer that his bad decisions are a direct result of his gambling debt are idiot mouthbreathers.

It makes the integrity of the game look like shit.
Because they helped a staff member who came clean and reached out for help? Yeah it looks just terrible. They should've sent him to the Pitcairn Islands.

I mean it can be alot - but thats proportionate to what he has (I dont know the guys personal finances).

Sounds like the NRL have already done the investigation and cleared him years ago.

Come on mate, seriously?

How naive are you?

Bloke losing money hand over fist gambling on horses/dogs, is the same bloke in control of professional sporting games that are heavily bet on and you think he never crossed that line?

NRL officials rocking up to the investigation:

They investigated him. If there was even a slight suspicion they would have canned him. They could have phased him out anyway. You think the nrl are risking everything for one guy?
