Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2026

Our best players this year have been:
Haas (gone)
Willison (available to other clubs October)
HG Riki (available to other clubs October)
Piakura (available to other clubs October)
Mariner (available to other clubs October)
Karapani (available to other clubs October)

This has to be a concern, surely.
I would like to know what is taking so long to resign. Like, are we trying to get them to extend on the same amount? Definitely not going to happen since they are all premiership winners.

Plus, let's be real, PNG will be throwing money at all these players when available.

Whoever we don't lose to PNG/Perth and any other cashed upside due to player turnover, will be the ones we want to keep anyway and who will work hard under Madge.

Just gotta make sure we keep a talented and smart backline/spine with a hardworking pack.

I think the best thing that can happen in terms of Madge's stubbornness, is for us to NOT resign Bunt. That would mean, no more ridiculous hooker/lock rotation with Bunt and our 7 won't be injured every other game with Reyno.

The other thing is, with Pezet / Duffy as halfback along with Mam and Walsh, this IS the time to start running with the side we want for the next 5-10 years (of course it likely will not play out like this) but this means you have to bring Mozer and/or Bukowski through from 2027. Paix can take on the dependable back up role on a fraction of the Bunt price.

And basically, who are the key planks moving forward? Build around that, so:

1. Walsh
3. Staggs
4. Mariner (off contract 2027)
6. Mam
7. Pezet / Duffy (unsigned)
9. Mozer (off contract 2027) / Bukowski
10. Willison (off contract 2027)
11. Piakura (off contract 2027)
12. Riki (off contract 2027)
13. Carrigan

So this means of the key players to move forward, 6 are soon to be off contract / are off contract now.

Obviously, Verhoeven seems to be a key piece too moving forward as he is locked up longer term but a key plank where - centre or wing?

Wow I actually agree with Parker on something, Hunt should retire.
Yes sadly, I too agree with him. Letting both Adam & BHunt to stick around this year is a mistake. Adam should’ve retired last year which would’ve given BHunt this whole year @7 and retire at seasons end irrespective of how went on.

I do wonder if not being on the field at FT had any effect on their decisions to not bow out then

Might seem trivial but depending on the person it may not be. Couple that with an apparent team on the rise and it’d be easy to go ‘yeah I want to go again and have that feeling’

Sure, don't fight and force your way into the squad by being better than the other options.

Chuck a dummy spit because you've got competition and the halfback role is not being handed to you on a silver platter.
What's ironic is if he had of stayed at the Broncos he's probably played a game already this year. He's now stuck behind Strange and Sanders. Sanders may get dropped for the next round though, so we'll see.

I had that thought too. However, last year's premiership was the perfect time to retire. Adam had done his job, he turned us from a complete basket case to premiership winners. Hunt's redemption arc was also complete. It may have also given us a chance to sign Pezet for this year.

I think it’s just the competitive nature that sports people have. It’s hard to turn off that switch and realize that it’s your time to bow out.

I imagine possibly subconsciously fear plays a part. Fear of the unknown that retirement brings. They spend a good decade plus being told what to do, where to go, when to train, what to eat etc, it becomes a part of who they are and when retirement comes around, all that goes away. It’s no wonder that a lot of players struggle mentally in retirement.
