Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2026

Remind me again which unwanted (key word) player has been anything other than bog average after being moved on for not being able to cut it in Melbourne's system?
Howarth is not the answer to anything, other than being the back ups back up on a pie and coke byo sauce contract.
Cooper Johns.

🙃

Honestly I don't think you can fairly judge him based on an injury riddled Season, while playing out of position in a team going through a rebuild.

Also Melbourne wanted him did they not? they just wanted him to stay as Hughes backup for a few more years before taking over, he was the one to ask for a release.
The reason I asked was in relation to Drinkwater just to gauge what you meant.

Both were in a similar situation where Storm had raps on them but ultimately they picked Hughes.

I agree on Pezet, although I do think it's fair if 2026 hasn't inspired a lot of confidence.

He's a backrower and he has a pulse.

Roll out the red carpet!

Seriously though, Howarth has been a massive bust. One of those players you'd bring on a T&T ala Shibasaki but you shouldn't go out of your way to sign.
Didn't it end up being a decision between Howarth or Piakura... and we went with Piaks?

Kind of like how Haas and Tino came through broncos together and we had to make a choice

DRAGON ON BRONCOS’ RADAR

Dragons forward Luciano Leilua has been shopped to the Broncos as the ex-Samoa Test representative looks to revive his NRL career.

Leilua’s name has been put on the radar of the Broncos after he requested an immediate release from St George Illawarra.

It’s unlikely Leilua will leave the Dragons before season’s end, but it’s become apparent his future lies elsewhere.

Leilua, 30, played under Broncos coach Michael Maguire at the Tigers and Brisbane’s back row depth has been tested
I think Luciano is the level of backrower we could do with, but I think he's just not suited to this current playing group or under Madge.

Has had fitness issues in the past and he doesn't mind calling his own number.

I actually think Kelma Tuilagi is probably a guy we should go after.

It seems like fans don't like him due to defence, but I've never really paid close enough attention to it, in attack he runs a great hard line and he can get through 80mins with decent workrate.

Probably wouldn't cost a ton either.

He's also down as 109kg, so I reckon he's a candidate of being a hybrid backrow/middle... in the same way that Sitili was basically converted into a prop as soon as he signed with the dogs.

I'm not sure if Kelma can become a pure prop like that, but he has the size and physicality to mix it in the middle

Similar backstory to Kalyn Ponga.

Star Rugby junior. Earned a scholarship at Brisbane Boys College and everyone wanted his signature. Melbourne got him and it looked like he was going to be the next big thing.

I don't think Brisbane had anything to do with him. If anything Brisbane have taken more Melbourne juniors than the other way around (Coates started with Melbourne).

Didn’t his old man make all his decisions for him.

I wouldn't be against him.

if Madge could get him fit he could be devastating off the bench

Yeah. Am I thinking of someone else?
No, you just caught me flat-footed because the post was primarily about Howarth.

Yeah, Andre had a big say on his son's career. I don't think he was that concerned about Ponga making the best of himself as a player, just setting him up as a franchise player for as long as possible.

Neither North Queensland or Bennett were impressed.

like i've seen him play over the years but never followed him as closely.

does he have more brains than his brother?

Storm had Howarth signed up at 15 at BBC.

The younger brother is playing tonight and is signed to Storm.

About the same.

When he’s in a mood, he’s good to watch, he can be the difference. But consistency is where he’s lacking, he’s prone to lazy games and brain snaps.

Plus IIRC his price tag is outrageous.

Hard no. Just **** no. Leilua is almost certainly one of the players that drove Madge to become the one-time raving screaming lunatic that the NSW media like to run with. So much skill but just a ****ing lazy idiot. We want consistent, reliable players, and he is the polar opposite.

I was leaning towards signing him thinking if it was for the right price, there is potential etc etc.

But the I read your post. You’re 100% right, he would be the type of player to take short cuts. Need hard workers.
