THE BOSS Maguire Stomped The Naysayers! But...8 Months Later, Here We Are.

I dont think you need to be like JWH to hit hard. Its still possible to put on hard shots and that in turn would intimidate your opponent. The more thuggish type of forward is as you say getting stamped out of the game.
The problem is these days you run the risk of giving away penalties or sin-bins if it goes wrong.

Look at Patty whenever he tries to make an impact. Or even Taumalolo yesterday getting binned for a pretty soft lifting tackle.

Jay dubya wasn't known as a hitter .
More of a grub . Dog shot merchant.
Wasn't necessarily talking about hitters, just his style of play which you described.

Even Radley and the media have noted that Victor's been very lucky in recent times to get away with his style of play.

Piakura would be an example of what we want. Hurts in defence and makes runners not want to go near him. He is more likely to injure himself, which is good for not conceding penalties, but bad for him staying on the field.
Dunno about not conceding penalties . Gets pinged for high shots and late shots regularly though ?

Is it a case of players these days are not as good at 1 on 1 tackles ?
Having been taught since juniors to gang tackle ?
Priority now is wrapping up the ball . Bringing the ball carrier to the ground is an after thought.
There are plenty of opportunities to give the ball carrier's ribs a tickle in those standing tackles . But the intent to cause pain seems to be missing at times.

Players don't seem to be rewarded for one on one tackles either.

Lead up to Weekes' try. Piakura nails Mariota with a great one on one and yet doesn't get any leeway in the ruck and is penalised for getting to marker. Talty short-circuits when Klein blows six again and Weekes takes up the space he should have been covering.

I was thinking about this while I was studying Tawha but that era of Warea-Hargreaves is over. If you try to emulate it, you end up like Kaufusi or Asofa-Solomona and you're effectively stamped out of the game.

It seems to be more about pushing off the line than actually looking to put hits on.
I think a new archetype in the forwards that kind of represents that defensive physicality is a guy that sets your linespeed.

You watch guys like Starling, Mitch Kenny, Donoghoe, etc. that come flying out of the line to make first contact before they can get up a head of steam.

It basically forces the defensive line to come with them instead of hanging back and waiting on the catch and wrap.

Tawha as a prop should be lined up for it, but whoever this guy is in your defensive line has to be super careful on their target area in defence.

You come in hard like that and make contact with the head you'll be spending most of your time on the sideline.

Piaks is a hit man type, but his target area seems to be on the tip sheet, even if he doesnt make contact with the head he still gets penalised.

Serial offender Victor has some how fallen off the tipsheet, because of Sydney sympathisers that he gets scrutinised too much... now he's out there with his headgear on doing Napa style tackling and getting away with it

Also when I bring up Asofa-Solomona, I'm not necessarily thinking thug tackles, I'm thinking stuff like this.

When Nelson was coming through you wouldn't be shocked if that was play on. Now it's a sin-bin.

I thought Flegs was great for us as an enforcer. He used to smash blokes pretty regularly. I'd love to get him back because I reckon him and Piaks would be a great bruise brother team.

Xman isn't bad at the occasional shot either and he swallows blokes at times stopping them in their tracks. So we have it in us, we are just completely shot this season with blokes out / playing busted.

I also wonder whether Staggs could eventually transition into a decent second rower. He has the size and the speed and he can hit pretty hard, probably one of the best in our team for slotting blokes.

These days you get penalised for looking at somebody the wrong way!

Fleg is a great player but he was also a liability and really had to tone that aspect of his game down. There was that infamous Warriors game in 2022, but even Origin I 2023 with Turbo wasn't great and there wasn't a lot in it.

Dunno if defending at 2nd row would suit him .
Kotoni rarely makes one on one front on tackles . He likes to let the ball runner almost get past him ,then hit from the side and ride them into the ground.
Also I doubt he has the cardio for the extra work as a 2nd rower .
He would struggle with repeat efforts I think .

I'd love to get Flegs back for the right price. Although I do worry about him wearing our jersey again and being targeted by the ref for looking at an opponent the wrong way.

Xman, Flegs, Barnett, Patty and Jensen is a bloody good middle rotation

His reads aren't great either and would be under even more pressure at having to make defensive decisions at second row compared to centre

He plays for the phins now so he's more than likely off the tip sheets

Not to come across like sour grapes but his NSW performances really do show that Payne is missing some intangible at this point in his career.

He is all effort, he is a freak athlete but he just doesn’t add that much to the success or his teams.

It’s really hard to figure out. Maybe it’s aggression or something. He chips away endlessly motoring along at 80% for massive minutes.

Never has put on a big hit, rarely has a run that makes you gasp due to the heavy contact.

It’s really weird because he is elite in pretty much every tangible measure.
I’ve been saying it for years. Payne’s metres have been great for us because we have lacked go forward over the years, but most teams know that they can reset their line and give him an extra three metres and not have to worry about an offload or anything coming from it.

I want them to emulate a Matt Gillett type in defence. Everything he did would have stung, but was never illegal or even a risk of a “he plays for the Broncos” penalty. Unless, of course, he was 40 metres onside against the Dragons.

I’ve also been saying this for a while. We get a severe lack of dominant tackles for whatever weird reason. It’s hard to justify.

Was that Warriors game the 3x penalties for "tackling too hard"?
