09/10 Football Thread

I bet you enjoyed this morning then Penny! Bayern bossed the shit out of Juve, that was an incredibly one sided football match.

was fucking gay. At least Milan & Fiorentina are thru tho. Milan were pretty lucky to qualify. Only drew thanks to a penalty they shouldnt have received and then Marseille missed a penalty against real.

Looks like Dean Ashton has retired.

Sad news that, he had some talent.

gaaaay its changed to association football. wtf is that?

Probably coxy or some clown fart-arsing around to try and piss us off.

Holy shit... did anyone else just see that goal from Figueroa? For Wigan vs Stoke. You don't often see them from over the halfway line.

Sir Alex Ferguson said referees should not be responsible for calculating the amount of time to add on after watching Aston Villa beat Manchester United.

Ferguson argued his case vociferously with fourth official Michael Jones at Old Trafford after three minutes of extra time had been signalled.

He said afterwards: "It has to be taken out of the referee's hands.

"There were two stoppages of two minutes three seconds, but we only played three minutes added time."

Aston Villa's victory, sealed by Gabriel Agbonlahor's first-half strike, was their first in the league - home or away - over Manchester United since 1983.

And it put them up to third in the Premier League table, while United fell three points behind leaders Chelsea, who had earlier been held to a draw by Everton.

Ferguson went on: "Second half I think we deserved something. There wasn't much in it first half, they probably just shaded it and deserved the goal.

"Second half we pummelled them, had a lot of good chances and didn't get any.

"We are camped in their box and if we take one of those chances then the game would have probably changed. It's just one of those days it wasn't going in."

However, he also paid tribute to the spirit shown by Martin O'Neill's team, who defended with great skill in the second half.

"Every man jack of them has put in the extra 10 yards to get to the ball. We closed them down but it was a very strong effort from them."

Ferguson remained calm about his team's chances of retaining their Premier League title.

"It's not an easy league. I say that time and time again. If we get to January within touching distance of the leaders then we're in with a great chance."

A delighted O'Neill said his team had played "cleverly".

"There is a good confidence about the team and great ability," he said.

"There's a fine set of players coming through. If on the day we're capable of scoring goals then I think we have a chance. Just recently we've tightened up a wee bit and that's made a marked improvement.

"Manchester United penned us in and that caused us a few problems, but when we broke we still had a little chance to do something.

"We had a bit of luck when [Wayne] Rooney hit the bar and perhaps after what's happened in the past on trips here we deserved that little bit of luck.

"It's a great win for us, gives us a boost of confidence but we have a difficult programme between now and the new year."

Old scum. Has he ever lost a game where it wasn't the ref's fault?

Sorry guys can't change the title back anymore but would add neither can Coxy so it was not him (thanx to Tee for changing the title would be my guess [eusa_naugh ) )

Good ole Spurs choke again over night when they could have cemented a top 4 spot and gained on Chelski and Manure, bloody frustrating team to follow they are

Don't worry fella, we'll try and beat Arsenal for you tonight. icon_smile

I wouldn't get your hopes up though.

Last 16 has been announced and Barca got a soft draw up against Stuttgart who would probably have been my first or second preference. Some interesting ties in there aswell;

VfB Stuttgart v Barcelona - Should be a bit of a cake walk seeing how easily Barca disposed of Bayern this time last season, I would say 5-1 on aggregate to Barcelona.

Olympiacos v Bordeaux - Could be interesting but if Bordeaux continue like they are in Europe and a lesser extent in France they should have too much but the leg in Greece will be tricky and wouldn't be surprised if they don't get a result there, Bordeaux through 3-1 on aggregate.

Inter v Chelsea - Very tight to call both sides showed against the best attacking side in the world in Barca over two legs that they are hard to break down, this will come down to the team that takes the knife edge chances and Chelsea are pretty much the kings of that. I say Chelsea 2-1 on aggregate but it will be very tight.

Bayern Munich v Fiorentina - This should be fun to watch with both sides playing some pretty open football in the group stages and both having some good talent on display. I think pedigree counts for something though and with Ribery and Robben expected to be fit and firing by then Bayern should get through on the strength of a strong home leg, 4-2 on aggregate to Bayern.

CSKA Moscow v Sevilla - This is a nightmare tie for Sevilla or any club from the warmer European climates, CSKA are very consistent in Europe and at home will make life impossible for Sevilla. The key to the match will be if Sevilla can rake up a few at home because the Russian leg will be a tight affair. I say CSKA might get the upset here, so CSKA 3-2 on aggregate.

Lyon v Real Madrid - Lyon although horribly inconsistent in Ligue 1 have been quality as per usual in Europe and will provide a decent challenge for Real who if they don't turn up ready will get one hell of a scare against a side that knows how to score lots of goals in Europe and can rely on the marksmanship of Juniniho from freekicks. This is my pick of the round because early goals in either leg will make things very open and entertaining. Madrid should have a bit too much class though for Lyon who keep getting hard draws at this stage of the comp, Madrid 5-4 on aggregate.

Porto v Arsenal - Arsenal look very good currently and depending how fresh Wenger can keep his young troops through a long schedule will play a role, Porto are consistent in Europe and have some firepower to cause issues for a defense that is never particularly convincing. Porto will have this as the 100%focus but Arsenal might have this and still a Premier League within grasp add to that Fabregas and Van Persie have had injury woes that may or may not still be a factor. I think Porto will win in Portugal but they may have to sandbag a massive flood in London, I think this too could be a belter of a tie. Arsenal through 4-3 in an entertaining affair.

Milan v Man Utd - This is hard to select because you don't know what Milan you are going to get as they have showed patches of genius of late and then patches of rubbish as well. Ronaldinho is playing good football again which means they are a chance because he is one of the games true matchwinners, Man U have a lot of fixtures to worry about and are having injury problems already and if they don't sort themselves out they could have dramas here because by February Milan may not have anything else to play for in terms of Trophies as Inter may well have raced away with the Scudetto. I pick Milan in a semi upset 2-1 on aggregate.

Internazionale and Milan better win!!!

Will be interesting to see Mourinho return to Stamford Bridge.

I think Real will handle Lyon with ease. They are a shadow of the side that did so well in Europe in previous years.

I also reckon Bordeaux will fly under the radar a bit. They have a quality team, although Olympiakos are never really an easy team to play purely because of their home ground.

My picks to progress:

Barcelona
Bordeaux
Chelsea
Fiorentina
CSKA Moskva
Real Madrid
Arsenal
AC Milan

No undersoil heating there either, so the groundsman had to lay out all these massive tarps or something to protect the field from snow.

That was a bit harsh. Careless challenge but no malicious intent.
