1992 Grand Final..Brisbane versus St George

Two sides I absolutely loved the most during the late to mid 90's, the Broncos and the Raiders and that's because they weren't afraid to throw the football around and not just play it safe, every time I watch either the Grand Final itself or replay's of it I just can't believe how exciting and entertaining they were, man oh man what about that Steve Renouf try, Carne getting out of ingoal alone was a great effort but the Broncos weren't just content for that, they made the Dragons absolutely pay for it. I was only 10 at the time but I will never forget watching it with my old man and finally achieving what we both wanted our side couldn't the season's previous to it.

Because this thread came up I watched that grand-final this arvo. The 1st half was pretty tight as both sides due to poor execution failed to capitalize on the others mistakes but Brisbane seemed to be in control. The turning point came 10 minutes after halftime when Michael Potter was taken into touch by Willie Carne after taking a Langer kick from the ingoal. 2 rucks later Alfie ran from dummy half and scored which put the lead out to 12-4 and broke the spirit of St George as the Broncos ran away with the game and finished comprehensive winners.

Havent watched this grand final for a while i usually watch the 1998 and 2006 one the most.

Love the vision of Kevvie getting into dummy half to spin it wide for the renouf try

I noticed the date on your ticket Compound, the 27th September. The also won the 1998 decider on the same date. My birthday. I made some noise that day.

That's cause everyone probably knew St George couldn't play

Watched the game on the big screen at the Royal George hotel in Nambour .....got smashed. Great day.......love ya work Keithy!!

Yeah, because someone wasn't around when it happened, they automatically can't fathom the importance of an event. I guess most of us on here don't understand why Hitler was a bad guy either, eh?

I was two years old, but that doesn't mean I don't understand and appreciate the meaning of that victory. It's entirely unfair to write people off just because they weren't around to see it.

U r not a write off nings, you are special man, you really are. The game was different back then, the Broncos had a complete love affair with the folk of Brissy as it was literally the only game in town. Union was still an amateur sport, soccer was almost non existent and Lions were called the Bears and played out of Carrara where they would get smashed by 100 pts. U really had to scramble to get a decent ticket as ANZ would pack out every match even against the comp lightweights.

I recall attending a WCC match in 1993 vs Wigan and it contained the best atmosphere of any sporting event that I have ever been to, the Broncos lost that night but I walked away knowing that I had just been part of something amazing. Of course a couple years later, the SL war emerged which drove fans away in droves, in 97 I attended a match vs the London Broncos which only attracted 8,000 fans, the game fell apart in a very short period of time. Fans walked away from the Broncs and started following other codes. At the same time, union became professional and cashed up, the Lions became an AFL powerhouse and soccer currently is more than a minor sport. The love affair between the Broncos and Brisbane quickly disappeared and has never reached that early to mid 90's level to date or even close as four codes in Brisbane now exist and all do pretty well.

I wish u could have been around back then triple n because u r a pretty cluey dude and maybe u would understand why I (and many other of the older guys) are so critical of the fucking shipwreck that dare to call themselves the Brisbane Broncos. I was part of the glory days and I will never forget the wild ride.

I'd love to hear more stories about the state getting behind the Broncos. The Broncos 'bread' story is gold!

I was the same age as ningers and was probably dressed up in my Broncos Guernsey. I don't think any historical piece has really captured how important that day was for the club. That was validation for our balls out approach, for sticking with Bennett even when he decided to sack the King of Rugby League and even the sacrifice of the BRL which wasn't the same again. The Broncos GF win proved that a Queensland team could not only rough it with the best but even set the pace.

We were a marvelous team to watch back then. When we finally get access to watch those old games I implore you all to at least watch the odd win and see how exciting we were back then. We were a damn ****y club, but we deserved to be.

I was up at Coolum that weekend. The Saturday evening before the game the entire beach was covered with LET'S GO BRONCOS and Broncos logos etc scratched into the sand. Every shop had maroon and gold balloons and streamers. And I mean EVERY shop. It was phenomenal. There's been nothing like it before or since, not Origin, not other Grand Finals, nothing.

To be honest, the Broncos first premiership was the biggest and most influential sporting event in Queensland's history...yes, even more than the Commonwealth Games (although it had a larger impact on the state beyond sport).

When I was a kid growing up in Bundaberg, EVERYONE who followed sport at all, supported the Broncos. That's just the way it was. They were THE QLD sports team. Now with the Cowgirls, Tits, Reds, Roar, etc etc...not to mention all the southerners who brought their Sydney-club-following up here...everything is diluted. It's more common to bump into a league fan who DOESN'T support the Broncos than it is to find ones who do. Maybe our early success got people off-side? I know the Super League debacle hurt the club's reputation. Sad really.

Whilst I agree Brisbane's first premiership is right up there.....SOO 1980 for mine has been the biggest and most influential. You could argue that the Broncos themselves were a bi-product of that first SOO game.

So many of the other various sports starting using the "origin" concept ........

It was a huge event in not only QLD's sporting history, but nation wide as well.

There has always been bad blood between the BRL stalwarts and Broncos supporters......plenty of anti-Bronco sentiment in QLD

I remember well the early days when the QRL/BRL did the bidding of the more powerful NSWRL ( defacto ruling body of Aussie rugby league ) . The QRL were repeatedly offered the chance to field a team in the big comp but refused to take the chance. When the Broncs did take that chance and were brilliantly successful the QRL were livid. Full of petty envy and barely disguised hatred they did everything in their power to stymie the Broncos even to the point of supporting grossly biased and unfair decisions made by the southern overlords.

They then lied to the people of Brisbane blatantly denying they were connected to the Crushers when in actuality were the biggest financial contributors. Had they supported the Broncos and helped them then qld football would have been so much better supported. The Broncos were not responsible for junior league or even domestic local league but they were the ones putting qld league front and centre nationally.

League in Australia owes the Broncos a debt of gratitude . More than any other the Broncs injected new enthusiasm for the game and grew its popularity. I'm proud of them and their legacy.

The whole state was just obsessed with that Grand Final. It was incredible.

They certainly were.

The week leading up to it was amazing.

The leading news bulletins were what the Broncos were doing etc. Or them showing what the fans were doing.

I miss the Sunday afternoon GF's. If you didn't have GF tickets, somewhere in your street was a bbq or two & everyone was invited.

Yeah, Grand Finals don't feel the same when they're not on the Sunday afternoon. I went to the Super League grand final up here and that was a night game (Saturday, even, I think) and though the atmosphere was good it just didn't feel right.

I was eleven for the '92 grand final, and like a few other members that was the start of my obsession with the Broncos. I had been a fan by default prior to that year, as my family were all Broncos supporters, but that was the year I think I really began to understand and appreciate the game. It was a good year for that.

I watched the game at my aunt's place on the Sunshine Coast, and afterwards my mum and sisters drove back home and then caught a train in to the city for the reception at city hall, which was just a ridiculous press of people.

rugby league died a little when they stopped having the GF at 3pm on a sunday. it is seriously so disappointing.
