2019 Ashes discussion

@Battler
I`m a little Johny Howard aka cricket tragic .
Prepared a few pitches . Taught a bunch of kids to bowl swing . Early mornings in Qld summer with a 2 piece ball ,the ball can do some amazing acrobatics . Not so easy after lunch when the humidity burns off some what when the seniors play .

Starc lookin iffy for 1st test . Hazelwood down the pecking order . Pattinson firing . Siddle doing what Siddle does .
Patty Cummins , Hi diddle and Pattinson plus teh GOAT as an attack ?

Hazlewood bowled alright but if this truly was a test spot play off, factoring in the certain incumbents, the side would look like this:

1. Warner
2. Bancroft
3. Laracroft
4. Smith
5. Head
6. M.Marsh
7. Paine
8. Cummins
9. Pattinson
10. Siddle
11. Lyon

12. Neser

I'm a big fan of that bowling attack, but MMarsh doesn't deserve selection off one good spell on a minefield. That lower-middle order is really, really dodgy and I'd be shocked if they scored 60 runs between them at Edgbaston, which is traditionally bowler friendly.

Ashes squad -

Tim Paine (c)
David Warner
Cameron Bancroft
Marcus Harris
Usman Khawaja
Steve Smith
Travis Head
Marnus Labuschagne
Mitchell Marsh
Matthew Wade
Michael Neser
Mitchell Starc
Pat Cummins
Josh Hazlewood
James Pattinson
Peter Siddle
Nathan Lyon

Mitch Marsh is back... wish I could say I'm surprised.

Good squad and appears to be picked on merit but he shouldn't be anywhere near selection.

Neeeese

Hope he gets a game and isn’t carrying drinks the whole time

I have a good feeling about this Ashes. They can't doctor the wickets to swing like crazy because Cummins, Hazle, Patto, and/or Starc will absolutely run through their crap batting, and they can't dish out roads because we have better batting and it negates their one strength (swing bowling).

EDIT: In the last English Ashes they just produced green monsters constantly because our batting was close in quality but they were more accustomed to the conditions and they had Broad and Anderson, who were both younger and in better form than they currently are. This time around our bowling is better and so is our batting. Seriously, that top 3 is pathetic for them. Denly is a t20 mercenary who isn't even that great at the format but somehow continues to get picked up.

I wasn't a huge fan of Labu when he came in, but he's been improving out of sight and his County returns are freaky.

This attitude is the biggest stumbling block to us winning in England, we've now lost four series in a row haven't won since 2001 but we will blast them out. Let's pick four of our awesome quicks and watch England struggle.

England win 3-1.

Starc got 18 wickets last series- Our best return. Alderman got 41 and 42 wickets in two series.

What does that tell you?

You can't doctor wickets for swing- it's the weather- look up not down if you want to know if it swings.

Pattinson could be our weapon if his body holds up- if.

I’ve seen him destroy the Bulls 5/7 in 2017 comes to mind. Just moved it enough and even his five against the Blues last summer showed his skills with the ball. Shame is he gets to do it once every two years.

Not happy with Joe Burns not being selected but that was expected given Justin Langer seems to get his way with picking his boys as opposed to the best options for the team.

Very happy for Neser. His bowling has come on in leaps and bounds and his batting is quite handy TBH.

Agree on Burns BUT to be fair to the selectors, this one I can understand. Burns (in my opinion) is the best option available and I don't think Bancroft should just waltz back into the team and neither should Warner especially, however Burns has his fatigue issue. With 5 tests and county games crammed into such a short space of time, it makes sense to leave him out. It gives him a chance to fully recover and hopefully he starts the next shield season with a bang.

I have little idea what the point of this post is. I mean I can some interesting stats and some personal opinion passed off as fact but have no idea what you are trying to prove or highlight here. Can you explain further please?

I honestly didn’t think it was confusing and it was all factual , old mate has just said exactly what we have been saying since 2001- our bowling attack is so fast and yet we get rolled by guys bowling 40km slower.

Guys like Alderman would destroy England twice and not bowl above 130.

I am always sceptical of how good our attack is regarding being smart and using smarts and that will be needed again this series.

I did say potentially Pattinson could be the smart bowler if he can stay fit.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what our best "England" bowling attack would be

Bird, Sayers, Mennie, Tremain?

Something like that I'd imagine.

It would be good to get an answer from @1910 on that.

Pace aside, Cummins is currently the best fast bowler in world cricket. Patto has been tearing up county line ups for a while now, so it's not purely a fascination with his raw pace. I'm not a massive fan of Starc in English conditions, but let's get serious, he's most likely not going to get dropped.

EDIT: I'm not a massive fan of his, but I wouldn't mind Siddle as the third seamer with Cummins and Patto. He's been good in County of late. I always thought Faulkner would be a great bowler in English conditions, but injury and being pigeonholed as a short form specialist has rooted him.

But again, I can't see Starc being dropped.
