2019 Broncos Line-up

A thought here if WB has like every bit of control of which players to sign. What will we do if a decent player or better yet half comes onto the market that WB wouldn’t want. Who decisions would it be to sign them, would WB get the say.

I believe having full control of the football department is in his contract. So yeah, it would still be up to Wayne.

He'll have no say on who we sign next year.

which is likely what the reports are that we want a coach in place by Christmas ... that way the new coach can get a head start on building his team

Which is ridiculous because we are building a great team and now there is a big spanner thrown in the works. Which more than likely will end in another transition period and player movement. It was well documented that maguire didnt have good relationships with players before he got punted , not a good attribute imo

why is it ridiculous that we want this sorted?

it has been decided that Bennett will not be coach in 2020

it is a fact that the new coach will get to put together a team that he wants (and rightfully so) ... So why wouldn't we want him in place to oversee retention and recruitment? it is absolutely unfair on the new coach for Bennett to oversee retention and recruitment next year.

i don't recall anything about Maguire having strained relationships with his players at the end of his Souths stint. and if he did, it was likely due to his intensity, which i'm sure is something that he learned from.

the alternatives are either rookies (JD); coaches with poor first grade records (Walters); or a head coach that is really still untested at this level (Seibold).

Maguire is the best, most successful coach available

Does this eliminate the future of the Kstaggs predicament?

Doesn’t eliminate it, you could still pick your squad of 30 and three development players and number 34 be ready for NRL.

You can’t fix it. When it was a squad of 25 with a second tier cap guys missed out on games- Parcell.

Now it’s 30 with 3-6 guys and you still can miss out.

You could make it 40 and number 41 surprise everyone.

nope ... the rules for next year are the same as they were this year ...

the problem was that we decided against adding Staggs to the 30 man squad when had the chance.

the same thing will happen next year, if we happen to have one of our development players ready to make the step up to NRL and we decide against adding the player to the 30 man squad while we have the chance

So our 24 named for pre-season would go along the lines of:

Boyd
Kahu
Bird
Roberts
Isaako
Milford
Nikorima
McCullough
Joe O
Glenn
Gillett
McGuire
SOS
Fifita
Haas
Su’A
Staggs
Shibisaki
Fai
Savelio

Yet to sign/off-contract
Lodge
Oates
Pangai
Mago
Turpin

That’s 24 on ‘official’ contracts assuming everyone stays

Rule has changed this week see above, you can use your development players after June 30.

couldn't you use your development players (from the bench) this year ... hence why we were able to play Staggs

No restrictions now. Top 30 must be published and after June 30 you can use your 3-6 development players as you wish.

Union/Nrl were keen to change it.

Yep there was restrictions. We could only use staggs as a bench player unless we showed we had extenuating circumstances (eg all our top 30 centres were injured)

Sounds like 2019 is gonna be a disaster. Hopefully I’m wrong but this whole coaching debacle is a massive distraction.

I’d be all for offloading Bird and bringing in DCE.

So:

1. KNik
2. Oates
3. Roberts
4. Boyd (c)
5. Isaako
6. Milford
7. DCE
8. Joffa
9. Macca
10. Lodge
11. Su’A
12. Gillett
13. TPJ

14. Turpin
15. McGuire
16. Haas/Glenn
17. Fifita

I wouldn't be ...

DCE to me is a bit like Hunt (just with a bigger price tag) ... DCE hasn't really shown that he can deliver in the pressure moments yet.

many people want him here on the back of his origin 3 form, yet it was a dead rubber.

DCE also has shown to have a negative effect on team harmony unless he gets his way ... not the sort of player you want or need in your squad.

besides, i think having to halves in your team that are each on over $1 million a season, leaves you to short in other important area's

people have been way too harsh on Bird ...

Thanks to the Sharks, he didn't have a preseason because they delayed getting him the shoulder surgery he needed until it was our problem.

once he finally got back, the club discovered a sternum injury (that he was also suffering while at the Sharks), that would have been causing him an incredible amount of pain when touched ... it showed an incredible amount of guts and heart to even take the field.

a fully fit Bird will leave many people with egg on their faces and hopefully he is carving up for us and not against us
