2024 NRL General Discussion Thread

I watched a little you tube yesterday talking about gambling on NRL games in PNG . Kids can place bets apparently !

Maybe the Chinese fire up a Lotto or Lotery to woo the locals ?

So now I am watching my peas and cues .

I must say I got a rude shock as I don`t consider myself a racist or a bigot , but I got a DM telling me my post was not PC and to watch myself !

There's a bit of that going on on this forum. Ignore it I say.

Mate I feel you. Humour is dying a death because there are people with **** all better to do but sit on a keyboard just waiting to be “offended”.

It’s a social media forum FFS! How can anyone be offended?

I can see the point if some dick is inciting violence or hatred, but all this PC shit is killing the “social” in the idea of social media.

If we considered you to be a racist or a bigot on here, you would have been met with a 7 day automatic ban. We appreciate you taking our message on board.

LOL. I got banned for being a racist bigot for reposting a run-of-the-mill sheep shagger gag that was misconstrued to be blasphemous. Still, at least I wasn't murdered for it.

If you guys have a problem with moderation, take it to staff chat. We'll stop this conversation here thanks.

I will say though, this is a great forum and the staff do a great job to keep it that way. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes that most of you will never see, if the staff feel a need to step in, there is always a good reason for it and if we get it wrong, we own it.

Well ,,, I tried to interact in Staff Chat , but couldn`t understand the interface .
Otherwise I would have queried the sanction to help me understand what the boundaries are , as they certainly aren`t clear .
That said I am happy there is moderation .

So apparently the Bears bid is going to be back on.

The Bears didn't offer a license fee in their proposal, but now they're going to backlfip and offer one in order to get the bid back on track.

There'll be a Perth team with or without this mob, depends how much damage they've done I guess.

The Bears bid chief has broken his silence. and some of what he says is interesting if true... for example, it was revealed that the NRL expected the Bears to pay a licence fee of $20 million, but didn't charge the Dolphins anything to enter the comp.

Western Bears bid chief Peter Cumins said:

“I’m gutted. That’s the best description,” Cumins told Sydney’s 2GB radio on Thursday morning.

“Peter Beattie (ARLC board member and expansion taskforce chief) did put to us that a licence fee would be required but to be fair, in the actual bid document, the request was for us to proffer a licence fee.

“We chose to say zero.

“We said zero and that sounds ridiculous, but to put it in context, the last new club, which was the Dolphins, they paid a zero licence fee and they are a club that has been going for 75 years and has $130 million in assets.

“They already have all the facilities needed for an NRL team.”

“You compare that (the Dolphins’ infrastructure) to our situation where we are a start-up in an AFL state,” he explained.

“We don’t have the facilities for an NRL team.

“In our bid case, we had to provide $10 million in capital expenditure to make temporary facilities until the government was able to build us something long term.

“You can imagine the start-up costs for a new team, just the relocation expense for 40 players and their families.

“With the licence fee stipulation, there was no amount given by the NRL.

“Whether we made it a licence fee of say $1 million, our view was that it was not significant enough to make a commercial difference to the bid.

“If the NRL required a $20 million licence fee, that would have changed the entire nature of our ability to fund that.

“We would have had to have raised a considerably more amount of money ... our view was that the licence fee was going to be so significant that we couldn’t justify it.”

The side they could build from that list.

1. Fa'alogo
2. Mariner
3. Tabuai-Fidow
4. Crichton
5. To'o
6. Talagi
7. Luai
8. Leota
9. Levi
10. Haas
11. Lemuelu
12. Nanai
13. Clark (would have picked Tino but I think he will play for Aus)

14. Harris-Tavita
15. Su'A
16. Leniu
17. Utoikamanu

So many other options, as well.

Hooker is a big let down for them, hopefully for them someone emerges in between now and then, but even with hooker being a weak position for them the players they could have at their disposal could do some serious damage and can definitely be a serious contender.

Easy way to stop this switch shit. Say no more origin for players not aligned directly to Australia in test matches. All these islanders would then back track pretty quickly as they are all about the cash.

Yeah, not really interested in that tbh. I'm not sure what the answer is when it comes to Origin and Internationals but I don't want players in the Aus team who are only there for the Origin payday.

I think Origin needs to open up a bit sadly. I don't see why a player that played their first football in qld/nsw can't also play for another international team. It's possible to be aligned with more than one place.

We take the game outside of Qld/NSW all the time, it hasn't been exclusively based in those two states since the early 90's. Move with the times I say.

I agree. It stopped being an audition for Australian selection a long time ago. For mine, the only players I would outright exclude are the English SL imports.
