2024 NRL General Discussion Thread

If the Australia government were smart they should do a Vlando on Vlando and be asking for a percentage cut of the gambling money the NRL gets for every bet placed as part of the deal.

Interesting that the government is happy to throw $600mil to essentially support the gambling industry.

Yes , they will be lining up to get a piece of the $600 mil pie.
I wonder how much of that will get to where it's supposed to go.

10 % goes to all the clubs .
Then the other 540 over 10 years . 54 Mil in 10 years time wont be as valuable .

It`s a buffer against Chinese influence .
Chinese are loaning money to small countries to build roads and ports . If / when the little country can`t pay back the loan China reposseses . Google China in Sri Lanka for an example .

The NRL have just bought the Ibis Styles Hotel in Port Macquarie for $15.5 million and a Mantra Hotel in Brisbane for around $22 million. They now have 5 hotels.

Mercure Kawana Waters in Sunshine Coast ($20 million).
Quest Hotel in Woolooware ($20 million).
Beetson Hotel (formerly Gambaro Hotel) in Brisbane ($30 million).
Ibis Styles Hotel in Port Macquarie ($15.5 million).
Mantra Hotel in Brisbane ($22 million).

The aim is to have $300 million in revenue-generating assets.

I cannot stand PVL for his negative influence on the actual game, but can't fault this. It's great business.

The tax free status for the players is surely going to rile up alot of clubs.

I read somewhere that whilst it is tax free in PNG, it doesn't necessarily mean they're suddenly exempt from taxes in Australia.

Unsure how it all plays out with Visa's, etc. but it was mentioned that working overseas doesn't necessarily mean you're not paying Australian taxes... unsure how it all works, but it sounded like the Aust government would have to give tax exemptions as well and giving highly paid footy players tax exemptions is unlikely to go down well in the current high cost of living environment.

And so it bloody should ... The tax free status essentially means that PNG will be playing with a 40% higher salary cap than the rest of the comp
