2024 NRL General Discussion Thread

And with this one move, politics has officially entered another facet of our lives ... The NRL is now another political tool.

Hell, the press conference to announce their entry to the NRL was held by the Prime Minister's of both countries
Will be interested to see how their recruitment goes, but I just can't see them putting together a competitive roster... can see them being bottom 4 and numerous spoons until the Federal bank of Australia cuts its funding and they get culled.

Do the PNG have a $150mil to contribute? I'm sure China would be happy to stump up the cash.

The NRL have just bought the Ibis Styles Hotel in Port Macquarie for $15.5 million and a Mantra Hotel in Brisbane for around $22 million. They now have 5 hotels.

Mercure Kawana Waters in Sunshine Coast ($20 million).
Quest Hotel in Woolooware ($20 million).
Beetson Hotel (formerly Gambaro Hotel) in Brisbane ($30 million).
Ibis Styles Hotel in Port Macquarie ($15.5 million).
Mantra Hotel in Brisbane ($22 million).

The aim is to have $300 million in revenue-generating assets.
Although the era when it was affordable has long gone, it would be nice if NRL buys or makes it's own stadium eventually, like AFL who own Marvel stadium.

What happens if the opposition gets elected soon and pulls the plug on this? Is there any clause in around that? $600 million to PNG of tax payer money with a large chunk going to boofhead football players who don't contribute much to society may not go down well in non-league areas.

Agreed.......no NRL player will want to live fulltime in PNG.

If that tax exemption is in place then it will attract players. If your on a mill now, your basically paying 450K in tax at the moment and that 450K can go along way.

Given there will now be two international teams, does the N in NRL need to change?

Speaking as someone who lived in Port Moresby for a while... Nowhere near enough. I don't think a lot of you blokes realise just what a dangerous place it is, and that's fair enough without having spent time working there.

I know, compounds, security guards, etc etc. Reality is that security advice when I was there if someone got in, was to grab your shotgun from under the bed, blow them away, then put a round into the ceiling as a warning shot so you could tell the cops you fired one.
