2025 NRL General Discussion Thread

I don't give a **** if they choose to represent their heritage but NO Origin. Make your choice and jog on.
Origin should always be a pathway to an Australian Jersey.
Apparently the only ones who support the idea of playing Origin then representing a different country were the NSWRL.
I think the idea that origin is a selection process for the Australia team is a bit outdated (and from previous years selections not even true anymore).

Origin is bigger than the international game. I have no problem with players who play Origin playing for a different country.

Yep was only being trialled during the preseason... which they spent whinging and moaning about the whole time.

4 weeks ago... "this is shit and is going to create a lot of controversial decisions"

Now... "why didn't they bring that stupid rule in??"
I have twice this season heard commentators (I think once was Brandy) referring to that rule as though it was in place and saying it "will be interesting to see if it comes into play if so and so fails their HIA".... pretty embarrassing and unprofessional that commentators don't know that was only in the trials.

I would support that if a team was selected after Origin and Tests were played .
But , that is not the case . Even a team selected in ackowledgement of players performances . After the series .

Come the end of the season the finalists dominate the rep squads . So Origin is a stand alone event and probably played at a higher level than test matches .
And not a selection trial for the Kangaroos .

Not according to the Australian coach.

Of the NSW contigent only Turbo ( injury) and Smith didn't play.
All of the Qlders played Origin.

That`s a fair call .
But ,, I see a lot of players opt out of Rep footy to have surgeries over the years .
True but if Haas doesn't pull out Smith doesn't play and then the entire squad are origin players.

Geez the promo packages Fox are running for Trells return 😂

The commentary on Friday night is going to be unreal.

If you ever needed proof regarding the power of media to influence public opinion, here it is in action in an NRL microcosm. This is what happens when you have less intelligent mouthpieces trying to spin a narrative, but when it comes to politics, the investment is much higher, and therefore the quality and influence also.

The NRL says it is not Big Brother – but after gagging coaches, they have now taken their ability to influence what fans are seeing on television to another level.

The NRL is now requesting information on topics to be discussed by the experts on panel shows before they go to air. Program rundowns have been requested by the NRL for shows such as 100% Footy on Channel Nine and NRL 360 on Fox Sports.

Producers of those shows have been asked to have discussions with media spin doctors at head office as the game’s bosses seek to control the narrative, particularly when it comes to refereeing and bunker issues.

The requests are to find out exactly what the programs are planning to discuss.

It’s smart from the NRL. They used the magazine shows to reinforce the rules around high tackles after some went unpunished last round. But, unfortunately, the message was not delivered correctly on the night by Fox Sports, leading to the hysteria the NRL was trying to avoid – and leaving NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo to correct the information on the same program.

I understand the NRL’s desire to control the narrative in the game, particularly when it comes to officiating, because mistakes are made. Even in commentary last week, Fox Sports callers were telling viewers that a player could retrospectively be sent to the sin bin if a player was ruled out of game due to a high shot. That is not correct.

But regardless of the potential for errors to be broadcast, the media companies should politely tell the NRL to stick to running the game and dealing with the multitude of issues that need addressing.

The concern is that if they are allowed to have input on what is being prepared for the fans, how long before some of the game’s loudest and most respected voices, such as Phil Gould, Paul Gallen, Cameron Smith, Brad Fittler and Andrew Johns on Channel Nine, and Gorden Tallis and Matthew Johns on Fox, are told to go easy on the NRL?

Particularly with a broadcast rights negotiation about to commence.

The opinions of journalists have already been compromised. A senior News Corp reporter said on air he felt hamstrung when it came to giving an honest view on the Las Vegas experiment because he had been flown to the US by the NRL.

“Conversations with our broadcast partners have occurred over many years and are part of our contractual obligations to provide them with accurate information regarding events, themed rounds and on field matters,” an NRL spokesperson said.

The opinions of some of the game’s biggest names scare the suits at league HQ. If they are restricted in those views, the panel shows should pack up and let the networks air reruns of Skippy. If the NRL wants to produce television shows, they should make their own. Or they can bring back the Graham Annesley hour, which has been dumped by the NRL.

How fucked. Although guys like Gordie and Hoops already have their **** so far down their their throat it probably can’t go any further.

It's those sort of sellouts that will thrive here. Think of someone like Parker who is desperate to bump up his profile and is happy to sell his soul to do so. He'd be more than happy to spruik the virtues of the NRL in order to climb the pecking order. The ones (if there are any left) with integrity will be pushed to the bottom and drowned out.

Not sure where to put this but I can't watch game replays on nrl.com. The ads run fine but the game itself takes forever to buffer then eventually runs on the lowest resolution. Tried multiple different devices and networks. Anyone else have this issue?

Yeah I had an issue the other day... buffering was super slow and no resolution... thought it was my laptop causing it
