Q-CUP 2025 Queensland Cup Discussion

I just flicked it on and it’s my first look at Verhoeven my goodness he is a big boy. Is he grade 12 now? Someone like a Phillip Coates is gonna have to look elsewhere soon with Innes, Verhoeven, Trew, Tupuse and even someone like a Tomu Cook in Cyril. Few of them will be on the move you’d have to think. Karapani and Leota in NRL too
Is a component of it being the biggest and fastest athletes compared to their peers?

of course they are but imo there is only one good kind of outside back. Very few slower lesser athletic outside backs are worth taking a punt on, especially if they aren't standing out in juniors. Pick those blokes up out of senior mens systems when you want to pick and choose. If you don't have pace, size or very good defensive ability you aren't worth shit in the NRL as an outside back. Or at least not enough to be broncos academy player. I 100% believe that there needs to be more strategy with spine players and forwards. Can't all be thick as shit. But if you invest in as many athletically gifted outside backs as we do enough of them won't be complete deadshits and liabilities to competently play wing and centre and to eventually excel.

I thought Verhoeven was a second rower / lock... is he more likely to be an outside back coming through... like Howarth?

Yeah fair that outside backs have to be the biggest and the fastest... more wondering if they're doing the other aspects of football well as well... taking their hitups, defusing kicks, smart reads in defence (even though U20's attack probably isn't elite anyway), etc.

Maroons u19 back line?
1. Raymond Puru
2. Saxon Innnes
3. Brian Pouniu
4. Sam Stephenson
5. Sunny Kama
6. Zac Herdegen
7. Coby Black

Defence doesn't ever translate as well. Mariner was a gun defender, more so one on one in fairness but nonetheless.

Verhoeven is a Second Rower/Centre. At his size though if he is only in year 12 still which I'm pretty sure he is then there is no chance he becomes a centre. Big boy already.

Coates is probably the biggest and he hasn't fired at all so far three games in.

Innes is all speed and touch and Tonihi is all speed and finishing. Innes is playing both sides of the field and has five legitimate try assists in two games.

Verhoeven is strong but again he was at the standing start today and against Ipswich same but just exploded.

You have to say the Broncos are in an excellent position with regards to negotiating with Selwyn. The question might not be Phillip Coates looking elsewhere its looking like it might have to be Selwyn. Innes, Verhoeven (most likely a second rower), Grant Anderson, Tupuse, Tonihi, Cook, Leota, Karapani, Coates all coming along in the system or signed up for next year. Staggs is reportedly done deal, Mariner is locked up, Jesse is currently sitting more comfortably than Selwyn especially when you take into account how cheap he is. If he is wanting a monster deal I hope the club can just identify this talent and say bye bye Selly.

Innes, Verhoeven and Anderson are the 3 I really like. Verhoeven will be a second rower you'd have to think so not overly relevant to the Selwyn discussion. Innes is really starting to BANG the door down and Anderson has a lot to like especially at what would be a reasonable price point for him. The rest still have plenty to prove and you wouldn't be picking any of the others over Selwyn unless his asking price is outrageous but the sheer amount of talented players can definetely give the club added confidence and bargaining power in the move away from Selwyn. You lose Selwyn theres plenty of quality for only one of them needing to stand up.

Scott needs to get a passing combination with Horne, it's great he kicks for him and Horne has scored a try from it in the first three weeks, but you need to have other ways to bring him into the game.

Wynnum get their first try and Scott goes from the left to the right, follows along and gets the ball back to create some space and Wynnum score.

Cup are after games but not MM or CC.
Yep I print the cup stats into neat little dossiers and keep them under my pillow for light reading. Shame the lower age groups aren’t accessible. You should start a black market and share them around

My Bronco top three for round three.

- Verhoeven second try, short side not much doing and then he just went and left them standing. In and around six Magpies.

- Bryce run from kick off, just great hit up work and then to add footwork and run 70m through the middle when really he shouldn't even be in there.

- Innes work on the left and right.

Honourable mention to Tupuse hole running.

Sam Stephenson

214m
4 tries
3-line breaks

Stephenson v the Bears backs is going to be a cracking game in round six.

If Black doesn't find form quickly, is he a chance to not even be the Qld half?

Fein is the form half of Meninga. Bounced back from a tough round one against Tweed and had a great last two games.

Bears: Karapani, Rogers (Powell and West).
Seagulls: Hoeter, Hunt and Allen (Hopoate, Philitonga).
Magpies: Leota and Semu (Vaihu, Siegwalt and Eggerling)

You’d know more about the selection process than I but I can’t see a Darius Boyd coached side not picking the halfback that was leaps and bounds the best Qld player last year who also trains with the Broncos every day. Not to mention he has played cup, looked good, is likely to play cup this weekend if games are played despite not being named. Also I don’t think Fein would be the man picked in Blacks unlikely absence would you not think it would be Herdegen?

I think the halves will be Black at 7 with Herdegen at 6 considering his A. quality B. Running game and C. His ability to play left side as that is what he plays predominantly despite wearing the 7.

Can’t see them going anything other than Black and Herdegen tbh.

I think Innes should be the fullback but I think he will be on the wing with Puru at fullback to fit them both in.

Seagulls looking very strong with the pack they have, Smoothy likely to play an entire season and Madden in the halves. Not to mention the homecoming of Ben Farr. Good outside backs.
