[2025 Trial] Broncos vs. Titans

Can’t ask for a much better start to the season than that.

Structure and attacking flair.. but more importantly, minimal errors and solid defence.

Titans totally gave up in the second half but still some really promising signs.

Our almost reserve grade side flogged their almost full strength side.

I thought it was a solid display against a very poor side but you can only beat whats in front of you and we did it very efficiently. Looked really sharp in attack at times and played with plenty of energy, which is good.

As always with me though, i rarely get carried away with these trial games. What it has done though is push some players closer to a spot in the 17.
I think it was good to see that the depth might be there if needed, which was a massive issue last year.

You want to have that next man up if injuries occur, and them being able to play to the system... it was looking pretty good from the forward pack again this game, which is good signs.

Surely we use the Doggies trial as a bit of a dress rehearsal for round 1.
Maybe not Reyno but most of the rest of the NRL squad?
I'd be tempted to not play Reece... I want to see him in the structure and everything, but don't really want to expose him to nothing reserve graders that might be looking to take his head off

While its nice to win big, i hope we get tested a bit more next week to see how we handle a bit of adversity.

1. Perham - Serviceable, looked decent until he went off injured, definitely handy back up fullback to have
2. Karapani - He was pretty good, ran a lot of metres but pulled out stupid on a knock on with no one around putting the ball down, its that kind of brain fade that stops him being a regular first grader
3. Shibasaki - He looked decent early and bounced back well from what looked a serious leg injury, fortunately it wasn't. He then faded a bit and certainly didn't do enough in my opinion to push ahead of any of the back line regulars
4. Hoeter - The anti-Shabisaki in that he started really slowly and got better as he went, I'd say overall he shaded Shibasaki for first back up
5. Mariner - Very, very impressive because he's always had the speed but his skill and strength in some of his runs out of his end and those two tries was elite - I'm really excited after seeing that
6. Walters - Billy was good too! But seriously, he didn't put a foot wrong and certainly wouldn't look out of place in the 14 jersey but like typical Billy, he faded in and out. The first half was really good though in a sort of hybrid 6-9 role
7. Madden - He was really good but behind a completely dominant pack, he is still the first back up half while Mam is out, he'll be a star in the ESL when he inevitably ends up there
8. Jensen - He was excellent, seriously. Introduced some really controlled phase play too and that try set up for Paix, beautiful. He's added to the middles make up headache and that's great
22. Paix - What a statement, he was arguably best on ground in his stint, definitely locked up starting 9 you'd think, he was, dare I say it, Berrigan-like
10. Te Kura - He looks ready but can he do week in, week out - not sure but he was skittling them and imagine him on the back of Haas, Carrigan and Willison - scary!
11. Gosiewski - His defense was strong and didn't let anyone down but was well shaded by Piaks
12. Piakura - He looked great while he was out there, he looked noticeably bigger and better - very strong performance
13. Hetherington - He was great and battled Jensen and Paix for MoTM, absolutely fantastic and would really help the balance of the side to be starting 13, very impressive

14. Siegwalt - For a back up to the back up fullback, he's alright - plays a bit like Daine Laurie and a bit too slim at this stage but threw some nice passes and was safe at the back
15. Philitoga - He looked like he was having fun, tried a few things and got a game in Broncs colours, not sure he will get anymore but at least he had fun
16. Leota - Man I wish he pulled off that intercept, that was a great play and he took a really nice high ball, second game in a row he has looked impressive albeit in short bursts but there is a footy brain growing there
17. Black - Still looks to be in a boy's body but the talent is clear to see - he isn't ready but will be by next season you'd think, massive talent

18. Rogers - He did some nice defensive stuff but still looks slow, he's a solid player though and so played a solid game
19. Innes - I didn't really notice him but he didn't do anything wrong so good on him
20. Taupau - The old fella still has it and I think he will rotate between Te Kura and Jensen in the side throughout the year plus of course injuries but he was really impressive and continued his strong back end form of last year
21. Semu - Man, poor guy - first tackle gets hit high, second tackle does his shoulder or arm and that was it, likely to be out a while
9. Smoothy - For a likely now fourth or fifth choice hooker, he's great and no wonder he is probably off to the ESL, he's too good for Q Cup and did a nice try assist for Te Kura
23. Bryce - I love his body shape and speed for the modern day 17 role but he is clearly too green, got left on the ground for their second try when he should have been back up but yeah, can see the massive potential with the kid, reminds me a lot of Howarth
24. Koellner - Repeat comments for Semu basically except swap shoulder for knee, poor guy
25. Powell - Honestly, I was super impressed with Powell because his defense was amazing and I love some of his clean up work, a ball of energy in attack too and took some tough hit ups - reminds me a lot of Plath to be honest, I can definitely see him getting some games
26. Hunt - Played like a man possessed, super impressive and he might have jumped ahead of Gosiewski to be honest and Gosiewski wasn't bad by any means - Hunt was just excellent, like chalk and cheese with last week
27 - Gale - He looked good as well and another cog in a very impressive forward pack, shaded by Powell though in terms of back up showings - you'd be happy with either though if you needed to call on them
28. Coric - I legit don't even remember him being on the ground - no comment

5. Mariner - Very, very impressive because he's always had the speed but his skill and strength in some of his runs out of his end and those two tries was elite - I'm really excited after seeing that

I think we might forget he broke his back early last year ?
