2026 NRL General Discussion Thread

The ARL Commission is set to seal a stunning $5.3 billion TV rights deal in a broadcast bonanza that will see the NRL trump the AFL’s existing contract by almost $1 billion.

The deal is worth around $750 million annually, but could grow to almost $800m per season with the addition of a 20th franchise, a 10th game per round, and Kiwi TV investment.

The ARL Commission is putting the finishing touches on the deal with a formal announcement expected in the coming days, if not early next week.

We shouldn't be adding more teams just to bump up the TV deal.

It should be because the game needs it, which it doesn't.

Aside from PNG though, credit where its due - Redcliffe, Perth and NZ2 are good choices.

A second NZ team is ace. Let's gooooooooo
For everyone except the Warriors, of course. They're going to have their talent spread thinner before they've had any success. Unless the NRL plan on giving them that sweet sweet fairytale premiership they've been whinging for.

fairytale or not it would be great for growth if they did win. especially eating into union territory.

I don't believe fairytale premierships being handed to teams (Cowboys, Sharks and Rabbitohs specifically) is good for the game at all.

That's fantastic - fairytales aside, do you think the warriors winning would be beneficial to NRL growth in NZ esp with a view to bringing in a second team? I'm not really interested in any other hypotheticals.

Yeah the talent is already getting spread pretty thin….bears and png to come. Years ago they said less kids were playing than the old days too. We’d have to start poaching from other codes and if that rugby union 360 ever actually becomes a thing more of our guys are getting poached…..Of course by then tackling might be outlawed completely and it’s touch footy so we could poach from soccer…? If a second nz team became a thing it would have to be sustained by nz me thinks.

Never understood the talent spread too thin argument personally. IMO, more teams means more players actually get a chance to showcase their talent rather than being stuck behind first teamers elsewhere.

Depends how its done. If it is earned, possibly. But NZ fans are fickle, as soon as their teams aren't successful they'll go back to rugby just like they've always done. Instead of a 2nd team I think the Gold Coast Titans should embrace the massive Kiwi community that flock there. Set up base on the South Island and move players from there. I think if the NRL plan to continue expanding without a plan, it's not a good idea for any team to be winning games with a view to bring in a 2nd team. The game has never really expanded past the East Coast of Australia and Auckland. If they can show an actual plan, other than a premiership bringing excitement to Kiwi fans, then maybe it would be a good idea. Unfortunately that isn't what this NRL leadership team does.

Teams should set up bases with the intent to grow the game, with help from the NRL (which won't happen).
Gold Coast-South Island
Brisbane- Ipswich, Toowoomba and Logan
Perth- South Africa
Dolphins-Central Queensland
Melbourne- Victoria and Southern NSW

All the players worth a damn are already playing or about to be playing though. We live in a world where Jack Gosiewski is playing regular first grade. Where are these players that are stuck behind a first grader?

I reckon now is the time to strike in NZ - Union doesn't really seem to carry the same interest as it once did and NZ arent at their apex anymore. 6 agains and all that other stuff aside, the game is infinitely more exciting than Union and could be a perfect opportunity to convert some, or at least, created a shared interest. You'd think there is more than enough talent in NZ to support a second team - might even start to make inroads into the high schools? who knows?

I mean that's really more our fault for signing him and persisting with him. Every other team can seemingly find competent forwards.

I also think the Titans should give anyone with a foreign passport a free ticket to their games. They'll spend money at the stadium and it gives people a reason to support them, even if they've traveled to the Coast for a weekend. Instead of having people handing out free drink tickets at Cavill, have a Gold Coast Titans Street Team promoting them to the tourists. They'd be better off having 23k fans and 5k tourists spending money than just the 23k fans.
