2026 NRL Player Movements & Rumours

I think it's because they are living in PNG and are being paid in PNG by a team that is based in PNG. I assume they would be required to pay tax over there (just as I also assume the PNG government will make them exempt from paying tax anyway).

you assume wrong

What's this shit the 2 May brothers did? I read the fox article and still dont understand as the video they had was them saying they were going to PNG.

Was it a prank? What a dead prank if so

Apparently it was - they've signed for the Tigers til end of 2030

Alex Johnston has been officially announced as signing with PNG. he is their second official signing.

in other expansion news, there have been rumours that Mal may not make it to coach Perth's first game. he may follow David Sharpe out the door (not by his own choice though)

Perth in trouble is sad. The city has been crying out for this and the NRL has done every single thing it can to set it up for failure. It sucks.
Yep it's been setup to fail... or they haven't even bothered to set it up at all... and if/when it fails West Aus will probably be lost to league for an extremely long time

Not sure why the PNG situation is so hard to grasp?!
The players don’t pay tax. That’s it.
Not in Oz, not there. They just don’t have to pay it on contracts or third party deals.

The PNG Chiefs would have to be one of the few politically created/motivated sporting teams in recent history.
We had all the Commie sporting teams that were government created in Europe. The only reason it exists is because the government wanted to get in tight with their government.
Thats it.
How does it make more sense than a Wellington or QLD based team?

Who's struggling to grasp the PNG situation?

I don't think their team will be terrible. Sexton, Wishart, Curran, Meaney and Henry are all quality signings in my view. Still a lot of squad spots to fill. They seem to have bought a lot of young players so far. Don't think Dolphins got their marquee signing and they are doing okay. I think Perth will be successful. I'd rather live there than PNG even with the tax free cash

Perth's got a few issues, one of them being Meninga as coach. Who wants to play under him? They are also trying to attract guys for like 500k which is like a million dollars for PNG, so they are up against a team that can offer double what they can legally.

On top of that, Sexton has been absolutely awful for Catalans in the ESL this year. They also don't have a pipeline of talent coming through unless they really tap in to North Sydney but then North Sydney is a long way from Perth.

I don't get this.
The Perth Bears are owned by the NRL. If they fail the NRL will lose cash and likely shoot itself in the foot.
I would have thought they would be doing everything (legitimately) they can to get them to succeed.
It doesn't add up.

Calculated acceptable loss to be able to fold the club and say “well you had a team twice and it failed. You aren’t getting another licence”

I feel like the current NRL administration have never cared about Perth, and did it just to be able to deliberately tank it and put a black line through them

Perth time zone also helps with TV rights deal by opening up new slots

Not much of a risk to the nrl tbh if it fails there are plenty of other areas screaming out for a licence hell wouldn’t take much to just give it to the north Sydney bears if it fails
