Q-CUP 2026 Queensland Cup Discussion

So Ballin hasn’t gone with the squad to England? That’s interesting.

I’m extremely excited to see:

1. Hayze Perham
2. Antonio Verhoeven
5. Phillip Coates
7. Tom Duffy
8. VJ Semu
10. Cameron Bukowski
11. Ben Te Kura
12. Jett Bryce
14. Tupou Francis
16. Jared Horne
21. Siosaia Poese
24. Joseph Tupuse

Please don't play Verhoeven on the wing, no disrespect to Bradley and Hoeter they are warriors but please no.
He got put out there for the game against PNG too. I thought he was a second row/centre… why does this keep happening? Hopefully he gets shuffled around mid-game.

Yeah, that's the only game he's ever played wing and I didn't enjoy it. He's a left centre and nothing else should be entertained.

I thought Harrison Taylor ran a lot but not that much.

197m
two-line breaks
1 try- try was about 70m

Please don't play Verhoeven on the wing, no disrespect to Bradley and Hoeter they are warriors but please no. Having said that outside Hoeter he will score three tries.

Francis off the bench he will come on and make a difference somehow.

Turner I loved in NRLQ, he was easily the best Bronco, was made captain and signed in 24 on the back of the Bears awesome Meninga season and he got players player for the team and won Broncos U21 player of the year too last year. Played A grade on the coast last year. Straight up and down prop when Broncos needed redirection in NRLQ he gave it.

Bryce- Time to play Cup. Three seasons of Meninga is enough. Great PTB, great runner and gets between defenders. Bears A grade isn't enough let's find out this year. Runs like Berro.

Bukowski- 80 minutes. Make him Ballin.

What do you think of VJ Semu?

What do you think of VJ Semu?

Still unsure, sometimes I watch him play for Souths and think something there but like all Magpies sometimes I watch and think did Hunt just stop at the park near his house and grab some people and ask if they want to come play Cup?

A backline with Coates, Verhoeven, Tupuse & Poese all at once should be nothing short of lethal.

Huge fan of Bailey McConnell and I'm very pleasantly surprised he's back, great footy IQ but pint sized and definitely needs to work on not getting folded in defense if he wants to be anything more.

Dirhys Sefo is a notable omission and I'll be devo if he's no longer with us, might need someone like him to step up sooner than expected!

I think Francis is actually named at 13 just the numbers got stuffed up from Buk onwards...

Won’t matter what number he wears. He just steps up. He is only 17 and normally I’d be more conservative but with him going from Cyril two tries in a grand final to debut in a Meninga prelim and the big play in the Meninga GF and then training with men for a Test. I say throw him in deeper and deeper.

Agree on McConnell- another second gen Bear. He's a scrapper but not sure where he lands in football life. He never goes away- captain of that star studded Bears Meninga team with Watson, Black, Bai, Innes, Bryce and he's changed the fortunes of the club in the last two years in that Meninga age group.

Two tries in the A grade grand final last year four games for Broncos NRLQ, like Bryce after three years of Meninga and A grade it's time to play Cup- hard to do at the Bears but somehow, they need to break in. Broncos love him.

With Rogers still out for while yet he might get his chance, I have no idea where he’d fit in with us longterm, but I’d just like to see good footy players like him succeed wherever they may end up.

Fair bit of Kodi about him too who I love and sorely miss.

1. Hayze Perham
Interested to see where he is at post ACL injury. We desperately need a fullback backup. Hoping he puts in a good performance and puts some of those stresses around Reece's backup to bed

2. Antonio Verhoeven
Would rather him at centre but he is a gun. Will be fun to watch anywhere.

3. Kane Bradley
Interesting one. Not a bad player to have in your cup systems and come to training but I think he is at his heights. Don't see any value in the top grade.

4. Delouise Hoeter
Love Della. Always has a rip, great player. One of my favourites at the club, puts in every time he gets a crack and is just happy to be there. Will do well as always.

5. Phillip Coates
I don't buy the hype. He had a good game in the u19's origin and his last name gets him attention. Personally I thought he was the worst of the Bears backs last year. I can't see first grade in his future personally, or at least at Brisbane. Happy to be proven wrong however. He has the athleticism and attributes and thats what Brisbane are taking a punt on imo.

6. Bailey McConnell
Interesting one. I rate Bailey, smart operator, its clear they rate him. I want to know what his ceiling is, and this will be a good chance to understand. This fortnight for Bailey will be make or break for him regarding future opportunities at this club you'd have to think. I am backing him in. Hopefully goes good.

7. Tom Duffy
The connections and chemistry with his players might not be there yet but he has to stand out in this game. BIG TIME. He is a class above this level and needs to demonstrate it if he wants to get time in the halves this year and compete with Pezet heading into 27'.

8. VJ Semu
Potential is there but I have never been wowed by VJ. Hopefully he shows us something. Not expecting a whole lot now or in the future.

10. Cameron Bukowski
Hope to see some more growth. Everyone knows of his talent, just want to see that its still progressing. Sort of player already that you know what you are going to get as the bare minimum and I love that about him. Still rate Blake in another echelon above Cameron for hooker talents, that finals series last year doesn't change that for mine yet. Super blessed as a club to have the both of them, and both working under Smithy as well.

11. Ben Te Kura
Who the **** knows what we are going to get. Someone I rate very highly on his day and frustrating every other day. Need more growth and consistency shown this season. If he can do that he is in my 17. The fact that 4 second rowers went to UK before him worries me. He is at that stage where he should be knocking the door down for NRL and on that tour.

12. Jett Bryce
Thought he had exited stage left... Will do the job. Curious to see if he will try to prove a point. To little to late imo. Nothin remarkable about him.

13. Luke Gale
Good experience. Know what you will get. Nothing to look to deeply at here.

14. Tupou Francis
I am freaking excited. Starting spot and all. GUN. Like @1910 said he has stepped up at every level so far. I say keep throwing him under the bus until he doesn't. Not concerned about his age one bit. Him, Antonio and Duffy are my ones to watch.

15. Beni Allen
I have no idea what to expect. One of the weirder prospects we have had. One week he could play NRL and the next he could be running the waters for the BRL. Interesting watch this one.

16. Jared Horne
Will be intriguing to see where he is at. Good prospect but not quite the Francis level of prospect. He has been one I've been keen to get up to seniors for a while. Will be good to see where he is at and his near term/long term prospects are looking like.

17. Brady Turner
Did well in NRLQ last year. Will just be interesting to see where he is at. Has a lot of comparitvely aged competition. Lets see how he goes. Dirhys Sefo is a weird non-inclusion should Turner be playing. Dirhys personally was my pick of the NRLQ forwards last year. Whenever he rolled his sleeves up we won games and scored points. Haven't seen his name pop up on other teams trial lists so hopefully is just injured or not selected rather than left.

18. Mason Teague
I think Mason has all the potential in the world. The fact that Tupou is starting over him tells me everything I need to know though. Not holding my breath.

19. Toni Tupouniua
Can't see a performance that will wow anyone coming. Haven't taken to much notice of him previously.

20. Josh Coric
I like Josh. I like that he is getting a shot. Will be good to see where he is at.

21. Siosaia Poese
I haven't seen to much of Poese and Tupuse but when I have my concerns have been that they seem like underage football freaks and that's all they are. You get plenty of them, not a knock on these two. Very skilled and athletic operators but when it comes to the NRL defences are good enough to handle your skills. Has to be a point of difference beyond silky and athletic that pushes further. Will be interesting to see if they have it.

22. Preston Cassidy
Don't rate he is just filling numbers.

23. Ben Farr
Do rate but at that point in his career if he was going to break through he would have broken through by now, good player to boost your cup sides and come to training every now and then but that seems to be it for Ben. Wonder if the UK would be worth a shot for him to try to kickstart something. Presumably with Gundry there he will play halves but I would have thought he started over Mcconnell imo, but maybe they are looking to test Bailey.

24. Joseph Tupuse
See Poese point above. Same applies.

25. Seth Gundry
He has got something about him doesn't he. Will be a good tell of whether that something is good enough for q-cup and nrl going forward.

You're pretty much on the money here but to add a few points,

Verhoeven gets a lot of hype and I understand why but I think he's still very, very raw. I'd like to see him get more involved and put some weight on before he goes anywhere near mens footy.

I 1000% agree with you on Coates, unfortunately this might be the most nepotistic sport in the world. He's got a lot of strength going for him and not much else but I'll give him a chance to show something this year given the blood, sweat & tears the powers that be are putting into him.

Semu's potential is untapped really but he was a late bloomer to begin with and has had interruptions that are no fault of his own, I'm very confident he'll improve this year and I think he's someone we just need to throw in the deep end sooner rather than later and see how he goes.

Bukowski is the best young player here and IMO he's pretty consistently been ahead of where Mozer was at the same age, I see a lot more natural footballing ability in Bukkas. But like Semu it's been a rough ride for Mozer and it's up to him now to show what he's worth.

Make or break for big Ben Te Kura, his best games for me have been at NRL level and he strikes me as someone who cruises along and doesn't care much until he gets there, not sure it's the attitude I want on my football team. Needs to work on his defense big time, and his woeful play the ball speed.

Bryce is all effort with the ball and one of the most vocal on the field which I absolutely love, but he gets absolutely thrown around and ragdolled out there because of his size. If he can manage to just put weight on he really could be something, but the clock is ticking.

We all know what Francis is, the highest ceiling of the forwards and it's no secret he'll go far.

Beni Allen is the wildcard, he's one of my favourites. I genuinely believe he's our most damaging middle with ball in hand, just a wrecking ball of human being. I have a strong suspicion he was carrying some niggles last season before his big time off with injury which has left him a year behind where he should be really. Very similar to Semu in that he can carry the weight of the world with him halfway up the field but just have no gas left in the tank after, another pre-season would have helped. I'm backing him for a big year, just hold onto the ball Beni!

Horne I've never been too keen on and if I had to pick one of these boys to fall out of our system it'd be him. Very happy to be proven wrong, we need the depth here.

Saia Poese really broke out last year and I think is being undersold here. I encourage everyone to do yourself a favour and watch the schoolboy cup grand final from last year if you haven't already, he's all over every try and even saved some too, that form has continued into the first mals game this year. His only hurdle is developing this physicality while maintaining his silkiness otherwise I do agree that he'll just get bashed by men. I see everything Mariner should be in this footballer, one to wach.

Joseph Tupuse I rate even higher, every time I've watched him play he's looked levels above the other kids on field. I think he was hindered in NRLQ

I think he was hindered in NRLQ by being pushed to the wing presumably to accommodate Coates. Just as effective on either side of the field, I'd back him to play cup right now and FWIW I think there's players who are much less talented and physically developed that are already playing NRL for other clubs. Am I the only one who thinks this duo has much more promise than Verhoeven & Coates?

Ditto Preston Cassidy, rubbish

Ben Farr is another favourite and I wouldn't complain if we ever have to call him up to first grade. That being said I do worry about his defense and ability under the high ball which I'm guessing is why he hasn't been given a crack elsewhere. Potentially just a really good cup fullback at his best which is fine.

Gundry is one that's never impressed me much either but he's had flashes of brilliance and I'd like to see him develop. Let's see.

Should be a fun game overall to see where our future is at.

Has Jamal Shibasaki featured anywhere in pre-season/ do we know which affiliate he's been allocated to? I recall him being listed as a T&T? But not seen any evidence of his existence since.

He's signed purely to Wynnum.

I do think Big Ben didn't go to England because they wanted to see him play in this trial more to earn his spot.
