Q-CUP 2026 Queensland Cup Discussion

Minute after HT, Bears down 16-10 to Souths. Gundry scores his second try and Bears go on and win.

First try was speed, second try he's on the right runs out of room so goes back to the middle where the scrum was Souths forwards just standing there not expecting him to be coming back through the middle. Beats two Magpies, massive step past the fullback and over in the tackle of two Magpies.

He's the type of kid that would have skipped around all week after playing for the Broncos.

This is only his fourth Meninga game.

Meanwhile Norths v Wynnum Broncos' fullback Barry Taukolo.

Scrum 70m out centre field, Harris-Tavita throws it to Taukolo who steps inside runs 70m and scores in the right-hand corner.

Harris-Tavita throws a nice pass for a try in the second half, put the forward through the gap close to the line on the left. He's happy just passing and kicking at the moment.

Courier Mail reporting that QRL chairman Brian Canavan is chairing a working group, which includes Dolphins chief executive Terry Reader and North Queensland Cowboys football manager Micheal Luck, who are preparing a submission on whether the four QLD NRL clubs should have teams in the Hostplus Cup.

This change could happen as early as next season.

It is understood the Cowboys and Dolphins strongly support the concept of NRL reserve grade teams in Hostplus Cup, the Titans have an open mind on the discussion while strongly preserving their links with their feeder clubs, while the Broncos are less passionate about it.

Wording for the titans is odd... I thought they wanted their own a couple years back, which is why they let the Burleigh affiliation expire.

Dolphins already have Redcliffe so I don't know what they're on about.

Gundry
Two tries
167m
2-line breaks
Second try was exceptional.

Only his fourth Meninga game over the last two years so plenty of good signs.

Leo Briggs the Jets outside back is exciting to watch.

Two tries, 178m, two-line breaks.

He is just effortless, takes hit ups to help the forwards and runs away 50m to score.

Does that work for Duffy? Souths have been a bit of a rabble of late.

It’s not dissimilar to going to the Pride in 24. They’d become a bit worrisome but he got them to a prelim.

Shouldn’t lose a home prelim but he was pretty good all year.

They’ll certainly mentally test him! Souths have broken Dearden and Black.

He needs to be assertive and let milf know that duffy is the dominant half and will be running the team.

I think black may have deferred to milfs seniority last year and resulted in less of his control and influence on games.

His best year was 24 with Chester at fullback and Schneider at hooker and even Clifford played 13 games at 6 so it was all really settled.

Not sure Souths have the same stability; Mozer and Duffy will be interesting.

Fun fact, Mozer beat Duffy in the 21 Meninga final 30-24 and both Mozer and Duffy scored.

Matt Parcell rep’d the Clydesdales today at the Cup launch. Retro 96 jumper looked awesome.

Parcell will be the best hooker in Cup this year.

A #7 needs to run the ball and threaten the line .
That`s why clubs are putting full backs at #7 .

Black passed and kicked , didn`t run enough .

IMO that is more the description of a #6. That's why the put fullbacks to #6, not #7. A halfback's most important role is to direct the team around the park, call the plays, push their points of attack to certain areas or target certain defenders etc.

You're right but a core element of being a halfback is being able to engage the line.

Look at Reynolds when he was at his peak. He was able to dig into the line which got his support runners on the front foot and put the defence in two minds.

It's not as vital as being able to organise, pass and kick but you're so more effective if you're forcing the defense to make a decision.

Yeah in another era .

Nico Hynze , Jerome Hughes , Jayden Cambell . What position did they play before becoming half backs ?

The speed of the ruck now means the middle defenders are under extreme pressure . A running #7 amplifies this .
