Q-CUP 2026 Queensland Cup Discussion

You're right but a core element of being a halfback is being able to engage the line.

Look at Reynolds when he was at his peak. He was able to dig into the line which got his support runners on the front foot and put the defence in two minds.

It's not as vital as being able to organise, pass and kick but you're so more effective if you're forcing the defense to make a decision.

I actually had typed another sentence about engaging the line but deleted it as I didn't want to ramble like I normally do.

One helps the other, if you're a threat of running, the line can't move off you and that buys space for outside and you're passing game or kicking game. If you're no threat with the ball your passing and kicking game are under pressure.

Walker's constant running threat means his short kicking game thrives. They come up stay up and worry about him meanwhile he's kicked or passed for a try- Black put pressure on himself and pressure on everyone around him.

Yeah in another era .

Nico Hynze , Jerome Hughes , Jayden Cambell . What position did they play before becoming half backs ?

The speed of the ruck now means the middle defenders are under extreme pressure . A running #7 amplifies this .

The only one I'll pay there is Hynes, but as we know he has struggled in meaningful games, especially in the realm of closing out tight games (where team direction is most critical). Hughes, as part of the Storm, has the benefit of Grant taking on a lot of the organisation & direction. Campbell, the only reason he (or Foran, or Brimson) is wearing the #7 is because the Titans can't recruit or develop a halfback to save their life, and they keep signing players with flashy running games and little organisational skills.

It's working for Hughes, but is it actually working for Hynes and Campbell, and their teams?

Campbell was probably better as a 6 when he could sit at 2nd receiver and workover an edge.

Trindall is probably the actual 7 for sharks given he does all the kicking. I'm not sure about all the other duties, but they go through the ruck a lot and Brailey did get named at 7 last year vs storm only to play the whole game at 9. I think that gave an indication that he probably does a fair bit of getting the team around the park from dummy half whilst waiting for his halves to call it for a backline play.

Bears deplorable yesterday. This is not the same side as last year in any way.

6-0 at HT and lose 22-0 and first Meninga side kept to 0 this year. Want to sort it out before the Grand Final rematch next week.

It was a good afternoon for the Tigers, their Connell side also sprung an upset on the Jets.

Big game for the Magpies this afternoon against the Dolphins. Souths can't afford to drop anymore games and the Dolphins are the heavyweights of the competition with a stack of NRL players.

The Connell clash between Magpies/Bears is my match of the round. Magpies are a fiery team and their games have all been hard fought affairs. Bears had to come from behind to beat the Dolphins and proved too strong either side of half-time.

We're getting into that stage where teams are beginning to find their rhythm so this shapes as a statement game for both teams.

I have been really disappointed with the Meninga, Cyril season so far. I watched Storm v Raiders Flegg to watch Watson- he scored a great try playing 7 not 9 like he did at the Bears.

Verhoeven assigned to Wynnum

Read that on the list, I think it improves his chances slightly of playing Cup earlier.

What excites me is Jacks being at Wynnum, a quality wily old fox will do Wynnum wonders.

Wynnum always have forwards sorted but some points and strike in outside backs is what they lack. EQW, Sironen, Delouise and Farr improves that situation.

I think you’ll find Dela is at Burleigh

Norths v Falcons in Meninga.

Norths 61% of the ball
1014 more metres.
17-line breaks to 3.
70 tackle breaks to 7.
Average set 42m compared to 21m
Missed tackles 7 to 70.

Adaquix-Jeramiah Watts-Luke- 198m from fullback and three tries for Norths.

Very strategic and rewards based by Brisbane. Bears are the premiers and Burt has been given the job of improving Semu and Mozer.

I said last year Burt was pivotal in improving Mariner and Karapani and he's been given another job here.

Semu and Mozer have to take this chance, good players, great club and premiership coach.

Wynnum- Allen, Verhoeven, Te Kura, Hunt, Bukowski

Should burt be added to the broncos coaching staff would be a good addition

Damn I had to do some double takes with the q cup team lists. Thats some huge musical chairs with our affiliated players!

It seems 2 years on the trot now (that I’ve noticed) that QRL haven’t released a gains and losses type summary for qcup ahead of the season. Why is it so poorly run?
