A critical analysis of player turnover

It's actually quite easy to type without looking at a keyboard.

If i'm watching the game live, i generally have the laptop on my lap (of all places) and post in the spoiler thread without missing any of the action.

true, but can you read posts and watch the game at the same time?

Yeah, in fairness, its a tough call to thrust the exit list in front of the Broncos' officialdom and cry mismanagement ... There were circumstances attached to each that made it very difficult for the club to keep them ..

I'm more interested in watching how the club handles the next 12 months ... Only a complete fool would say the Broncos are "fine" and on track at the moment .. there has been significant blood letting in terms of the talent the Broncos have had to let go over the past few years but its come to point now where the worm has turned and the club SURELY has room to strike back by way of some salary cap freedom.

2011 will be a huge indication of how serious the current Broncos organisation is about turning out a team that is seriously capable of matching it with the Melbournes ect at the business end of the season.

I, for one, am growing a little tired of looking at the Broncos roster and thinking "best case scenario - third or fourth" as I have done over the past few years.

we've got the second longest finals streak of all time, and average better than a premiership every four years......apart from melbourne and their prowess as a young club in the league, I don't think you can be too critical of how we are travelling. if a young team like ours with potential can stick together I am sure they can develop into a force within a few years and challenge for the title repeatedly...just a matter of holding on to the young guns.

Good points raised here, and I agree, most of the players that have left there wa very little the Broncos could have done to prevent it. Hammant got an offer we couldn't match. Ennis hasn't been loyal to anyone, Boyd copped plenlty in this forum, but again offered more with the Dragons. (Lets not forget that Hunt was still with us then). Petreo, that was just a **** up, everyone pretty much agrees with that.

F**K Hannant he can stay at the dogs. Im happy with the team we have. yes we fell away abit last night but that will come with experience for the young guys.

There was more heart/pride on that field last night then the Broncos have had in a long time.

In my opinion whoever is making the recruitment decisions has short changed the club, in particular this season, but realistically for the last 2-3 years. How much evidence is needed to prove this? Does calling Mr T. Carroll back from retirement last year not show that the recruitment was not up to scratch? Does last nights game with two under the age of 20 props in a first grade game not prove this also? Does the fact that we now are chasing two of the players that we so easily let go not show an element of "Ohhh whooops c*cked that up" Genuinely it is exciting to see young talented players like Norman...but when the tight games get to the crunch, how many times will enthusiasm beat levelheadedness. We got lucky last night, the cows gave us that last chance...next time its simply fingers crossed. Don't know about you but as a brisbane fan I'm not used to having no confidence that flick and hope footy brings. The steadying influences are very few in our current side, and if its not recruitments fault then who is to blame?

if im correct boyd was actually realesed with a year to go on his contract?

FFS if a player wants out there is not much you can do. Force them to stay and youll have a slack P.O.S player like Mason.

Boyd was going to be wherever Bennet was.

This itself, if true, is indicative that he thought the coach came above the club - which is interesting because Darren clearly chose club over coach, and this is something we need to instill in our current flock of kiddies. Brisbane is the club and where to play the best NRL in Australia. This is how we keep players, that's how we were able to establish a winning culture, by having a side which gelled together, then more wanted to join. Look at Melbourne, players know if they go there it is a great chance to win a premiership, and they have been able to retain their core roster and that's why they have been so successful.

Or that's my insane ramblings

None of us know all the ins and outs of what happens at the club and/or what players are actually like. Maybe these experienced players actually weren't going to be such a positive influence at the club or on the younger players. I prefer to look at it as glass half full - in 2 or 3 years (if we can keep the bulk of the current crop) we will have one of the most experienced youngest teams in the comp. This is actually something that has been a traditional trademark of our club. As I have said time and time again - it isn't always about the here and now - we sacrifice a couple of years being geniune premiership contenders in order to develop a team that can be real premiership threats long term. I'd rather give not buy this year's premiership in order to win 2 or 3 more in a couple of years, than spend overs for players who don't really want to be here to win this year and then not be able to afford to develop decent players long term.

Agreed on that - if they want a release they've already made up their mind IMHO.

Hannant - wanted to stay.

No, he didn't. He walked into Bruno's office with a $300K per year offer from the Bulldogs and said "match it"...Bruno couldn't. Hannant walked.

He's a scummy money hungry mercenary and is no loss.

Yeah and when he announced he was leaving I don't think he even acknowledged he was sad to be going or thank the club, he just talked about how good the Canterbury offer was...

I do believe our player recruitment has made some mistakes in the past, sure.

For one, we should never of lost Civoniceiva. I didn't understand the point of losing the best front row forward to sign a guy who had yet to prove himself in 3 years of first grade football and another who was occupying the bench and was always struggling with injury.

Can't believe the club was so eager to get rid of all the depth players in one big go either - it was as if they were hosting a fire sale. The likes of Boyd, Stagg, Ennis and Eastwood should never of been lost to the club...considering we got rid of them for (IMO) inferior players.

I mean, the Broncos were so gun-ho about getting rid of Ennis they remembered, rather suddenly, they needed a rake to cover Marsh who spends more time injured than anything else, and of course hold the fort until McCullough developed. From all reports, he wanted to stay, he had made friends with some of the boys (was one of the Best Men at Parker's wedding) and wasn't exactly holding the club up for ransom. Unfortunately, the club didn't think much of him and his style of play and booted him.

Boyd, Stagg and Moon were all pretty much told to GTFO. While, in the case of Eastwood it was actually quite funny. The big fella heard his old mate Dean Benton was coming back and as soon as he heard that he high tailed it to Leeds where Cullen basically told him to accept the awesome deal, because it was in his best interest...

I mean, that was a current international that was being groomed for the backrow for ages and he was basically given a big ticket tek parade out of the Broncos...it didn't make much sense to me.

Although it did once the news broke about Hunt. Apparantly, Bruno and his men thought, by saving their pennies they could afford Hunt who over the past twelve months had turned into something of a jaded sook over an incident he got caught up in and deserved all the public humiliation he got.

To me, the Broncos recruitment management remind me more and more of the Underpants gnomes from South Park.

Generation One (Lockyer, Parker, Thaiday, Hodges)

Generation Two ???

Generation Three (PROFIT)

Most of those players, those younger players who we had in 2008, were likely to stay with the club if the reports were to be believed. Ennis, Boyd, Moon (eh I didn't mind him leaving) and Stagg were all keen on staying and dare I say, had management not been so keen to allow Eastwood out of his contract early and actually encouraged him to stay I believe we would've been in a much better position in 2009 than what we were.

Combine that with some silly signings in 2007 that cost us Petero's signature and really, we all should be dissapointed that we haven't been able to take home another premiership.

However with that said, as long as the club has learnt and is willing to sign up all these young guys to lengthy contracts, I'll be happy. Maybe sign a few of the old boys up (Hannant and Civoniceiva) and I believe we could give 2011 a real shake, if we can't already give the current premiership a shake that is.

To be honest I'm not entirely concerned on an individual level with the loss of the majority of those players.

What completely bewilders me is that an entire generation - the 23-27 year olds with experience that we had invested both time and money into - was shown the door seemingly with only limited forethought as to the potential void they would leave. The fact that replacements of similar experience weren't sought IMO reinforces the ineptness of our recruitment/player retention over the last few years.

Regarding Ennis, my theory was that the Broncos were continuing to undervalue the hooker position, and that they just weren't making room for him beyond the time they offered.
But in Rugby League Week this week, the Brisbane recruitment manager states that Andrew McCullough is the first player EVER in the history of the club that they've relocated before he finished high school. He was so impressive that they moved him to Brisbane before he started year 12 so that he could attend all their training sessions.
So with that waiting in the wings, I can understand why Ennis wasn't offered more than a year.
