What better and more reliable source for such judgment than gaming nerds?
Surfers Paradise has been voted Australia's most loathed landmark, with nearly a quarter of all people polled in an online survey admitting they'd like to "destroy it with a giant hammer".
In a blow to the Gold Coast's affable mayor, Ron Clarke, his beloved Glitter Strip was voted "Australia's number one public eyesore" by online video game community Red Faction Guerrilla, which polled 400 gamers this week.
Respondents said the home of imposing skyscrapers, bikini-clad meter maids and Schoolies Week was the place they'd most like to see reduced to rubble.
The next most hated Aussie landmark was Sydney's monorail - recently likened to a tapeworm by Australian playwright Louis Nowra - with 16.7 per cent of the vote, and Melbourne's Federation Square with 14.1 per cent.
"Some might call it un-Australian, but it turns out the beloved city of Surfers Paradise is the landmark most Australians would like to demolish," Red Faction Guerrilla said in a statement.
"In Queensland, Surfers Paradise was the clear loser, with a whopping 23 per cent of Australia voting for its termination."
