Ashes Discussion

Yep, openers are a huge problem moving forward. Harris is just not good enough and they really needed him to fill the gap. Pucovski is a head knock away from retirement and Hunt, Street and Ward are all unproven at this level too.
I'd love to know how Renshaw is going... behind the scenes that is.

Thought I heard that he still wants to be an opener, but I believe he's been batting down the order in limited overs cricket... not sure how far down he's batting in shield though??

When he first came in his temperament was excellent and could play spin very well for an opener... before the Aust media destroyed his mindset / confidence he was an opener that knew exactly where his off stump was (seeing off the new ball... i.e. the opener's main job!), proficient scorer through leg and off his pads if the pace bowlers strayed, and could play spin once he had seen off the new ball.....

but "nah nah nah ... he needs to learn how to score through the offside because he can't keep up with Warner and is stifling him." ... and now all of a sudden he has become a nicker outside off

Unfortunately I think he has now done a full 180 and somewhat turned his attention to short form cricket in order to make a career out of the T20 circuit... so I'm not sure how easily he could revert to being that patient scoring opener.

He's a bit more mature now, and Cricket Aust could do worse than give him some assurances that if he can get back to being that patient player and fix his game outside off, then I'm sure he could be an answer at the opening position.

He bats middle order in shield now.

Yeah Renshaw is batting middle order for Qld. If he wants back into Australia it’s through opening though. I think it’s probably time where Joe Burns gets put into the middle order and Renshaw goes to open because Joe’s international career is realistically over. I think he is starting to more consistently get those decent 30,40,50 scores he just needs to go on and get a couple 100’s maybe even a daddy hundred or 200 just to cement the fact that he should be well into the discussions. I genuinely think this time next year he will be well and truly back into discussions. I reckon he should be going back over to England in the middle of the year and just play 12 months of red ball cricket and he could very easily be playing against South Africa in the test side next summer.

Yeah I definitely agree on him heading over to England again, and I'd say if CA gave out some assurances that if they focussed on red ball cricket they are definitely inline for a test spot.

If you're going to take a gamble and sacrifice a season of potentially higher paying work, then you want something from your employer that you will be rewarded for it.

I'd say we are going to be needing 2 new openers within the next 3yrs (maybe even 2yrs pending Warner's thoughts)... so instead of trying to pick test players based on one day form maybe start backing some of these guys to focus on the red ball game and giving them a pay packet so they can... a development contract if you will

Poor bloke. Having a tough day since that screamer. No real excuses for that but the man has dropped him twice with decently tameable catches especially that second one being regulation. Poor bloke looks like he wants to cry.

Not that I like Pommies but I think Jos needs to keep his head up. At the end of the day his competition is Johnny Bairstow could drop 5 more of those and keep his spot.

The competition should be Ben Foakes but England don't seem to want him.

Well done to Labs, he was clearly struggling to concentrate toward the end there but he toughed it out. Smith looks set for a big one if he gets in again tomorrow morning but Aussies basically got everything they wanted out of today.

Marnus always seems to get fiddly when he's approaching a milestone score.

Nicking a full wide one through the slips seems to be his preferred shot to bring up a ton

They all do mate, he's only human, he had a lot of luck today but credit to England, they made it really difficult for him

England continue to play not too smart cricket. It’s like they’ve over planned and come here with set plans and nothing they see can make them alter that plan.

This attack is too similar no change up or anything to go to. Australia just got in and batted.

Too short yesterday, Australia could just leave the ball too much. Didn’t make them drive at all and that’s what you need. Australia will be full and Neser with his best wrist control in Australian cricket will bring edges and front pad into play.

If England don’t get two-three wickets straight away they’re stuffed.

Labuschagne batted tough, it’s not hard to bat it’s hard to score.

They definitely over planned leaving out their 2 best bowlers on a pitch that had plenty of grass and overcast skies, then they rock up to Adelaide which is usually one of the better batting pitches in the country, lose the toss on a hot sunny day and trot out the 2 players they rested

If we bat long today, this could set up a series whitewash. This was the game they had to win so I can understand why they left them out but with the conditions on Day 1 of the Gabba, they should've put their best team out there

They’re being too cute. Left them out in Brisbane so they could dominate the D/N Test then bowl too short anyway.

Play a spinner in Brisbane then drop him for Adelaide where he could have an impact.

Finger spinners in Australia are a lost cause but if you’re going to play them then surely Adelaide.

1998 Such was the last English spinner to get more than 10 wickets at less than 35.

Ali five at 115
Crane one at 193
Dawson five at 80
Giles nine at 50
Panasar 13 at 48
Tuffnell 19 at 41
Croft two at 68

Lyon 204 wickets at 33 in Australia so we have a massive advantage over England already.
