Ashley Klein is a corrupt dud

To me he’s always just been the height of incompetence. So many wrong calls in so many games against all the teams, I doubt he had a bet on all of them. Unless he is some kind of mega genius who has been playing 4d chess the whole time to cover up his criminal activities by appearing incompetent.
Is it just me or would it be super simple to just get a relative or friend to place bets for you and transfer it to you in crypto.

If that is the case, why has the ref who has, as a best-case, it's-not-a-conspiracy scenario, who has simply "been the height of incompetence", been put in charge of the highest profile games in the code?
No idea? Ever worked with someone in a workplace you were clearly better at the job than but the other guy kissed the boss on the dick every chance they got? Thus getting the perk/promotion.

Probably. I have no idea how much a nrl ref earns but they get bonus payments for rep matches too. Personally I wouldn’t risk getting fired from a sweet gig by doing shit like that but that’s just me.

But was it a debt?

On this, if it wasn't a debt, how was he able to lose $400k in that timeframe, on a refs salary, and not be in debt? How would he just have that cash to burn lying around?

Unless it’s with gangsters loaning you the money to gamble with how do you get in debt? I have no idea, it’s never happened to me.

I don’t know what refs earn………….anybody know?

$330,000 p.a.

I'm not sure what the figure was prior to 2019 when Klein was investigated by the NRL.

It would be interesting to know if the $400,000 loss was total or just as of 2019 before he put in measures to ban himself from gambling. We have a 'report' he lost $400,000 but how old is it exactly?

Not bad for one day’s work a week.

Except the Panthers…

I don’t watch enough of their games to dispute this so who knows, maybe. I’ve been watching most of the games recently for reasons, even though most people are switching them off. I normally turn them off when it’s clear they are going to win again. He does live in western Sydney, born and raised according to google so maybe you’re onto something. I’ve said previously refs should have to declare their team(let’s be honest they all have one like the rest of us fans)and not be allowed to officiate them. Subconscious bias is a real thing.

The problem is, he was investigated in 2019 but didn't ban himself until 2023. Lots can happen in 4 years. Lots can also happen in the 3 years since. I'd also be interested to know which period the $400k figure pertains to.

Regardless of whether any of this affected his officiating, it stinks and the NRL should have nipped it in the bud at the time. 2019 was Greenberg era wasn't it? That probably says enough about the investigation.

Just when you think you've seen it all with the NRL...

2016-2020.

Eels, Sharks and Sea Eagles all received slaps on the wrist for their breaches of the salary cap.

Admitted publically that the NRL overcooked their punishment of Mitchell Pearce for his lewd conduct.

Was also under scrutinty for the way he handled the Ben Barba situation in 2013.

Among other things. He was really known for being strict, but then he also wasn't trying to woo the media like Peter V'landys so they weren't afraid to go after him.

Might be worth noting that V'landys became a board member of the Rugby League Commission in 2018. So it wasn't like he had no prior affiliation before he swooped in like an angel in 2020.
