Yes everyone this is real. In 2001 Australia and American Samoa faced each other in a qualifying game for the 2002 world cup and the final score was 31-0. Australia also smashed Tonga by 22-0 just a few days before. The outcome of this match led to debates about the qualification format as Frank Farina and Archie Thompsom who scored 13 goals said preliminary rounds should be introduced to avoid such unbalanced matches. Their comments worked as Australia moved to Asia in 2005 and a preliminary round is now included in the Oceania qualifying zone.
