Agreed but the pitches in Australia seem to be bowler friendly at present, even Nathan Lyon has hardly been used. He's more than capable anyway of holding down an end for long periods, so he can also cover Marsh.

But even if you really do want to go with the pace bowling all rounder, Webster's record leaves Marsh's for dead as a batsman and that is the number 6's primary role. Marsh has been given about 40 more tests than most to prove his worth and he just hasn't plus he's getting on now.

The selectors won't drop him because they won't drop anyone but if he doesn't make a score in the remaining innings this summer, the pressure on him will and should be immense. If he does make a score, he will go back to mediocrity again immediately and still not be under any pressure for his spot whatsoever.

Remember, Brad Hodge, an infinitely better batsman, got dropped after making a double ton.

David Hussey never played for Australia despite averaging 55+ for most of his FC career. Rogers had to wait until he was in his mid 30s and past his prime to get a proper shake, same with Voges. Sok never got an extended go in the test side despite averaging sub-25 as a spin bowler on Aussie decks and bowling extremely well when he did play on subcontinent pitches.

It’s a disgrace that blokes like Marsh and, as an example from the past, Marcus North get unlimited chances while players are demanding to get picked off SS form. It’s not quite as bad now as it was 10-15 years ago, but you do have Webster putting up Sobers-esque numbers in shield and Inglis who should be taking Marsh’s spot.

Edit: probably given a similar rant before, but the selectors keeping blind faith in subpar players is the number 1 thing that pisses me off about Aus cricket. Marsh has had his chances: he’s played for the Aus test team for years and proven that he’s not up to it. It’s not like he’s played 2 tests like McSweeney.

We need to bring back the Aus vs Aus A. That got some team movement happening
