Labs hasn't been good for quite some time now
Marnus is a weird one... when he gets to the crease it's like he has no interest in actually scoring runs at the moment. Like he sees his time in the middle as a nets session and he just wants to face balls rather than a match where runs are needed.
There will be times where he's leaving everything outside off and completely refusing to score on the offside... and then others where he keeps playing at balls outside off like he wants to feel bat on ball, but he's not looking to rotate the strike... and then he inevitably gets out nicking.
He's had a few positive innings this summer, but they mostly felt like missed opportunities where he gets a start but then he finds a way to get himself out.
It feels like a symptom that has been plaguing the Aus batsmen for a few years now... at any point they can get out no matter how set they are at the crease... and in most cases it's not good bowling that is getting them out it's just them getting out to shots that weren't needed.
As a group it's like they're having a real hard time figuring out how to keep the score board ticking over without it needing to be off higher risk shots.
The second innings in Sydney Marnus looked maybe the most comfortable he has in a while... he was picking up singles to rotate the strike, putting bad balls away and just accumulating runs without needing to take any big risks.
Coming into the Aust batting innings yesterday... absolutely everyone was aware of how dangerous the new pink ball is, but it pretty much dies away after 15 overs. Labs comes out fidgeting at a chest high ball on a 7th wicket line and nicks off to a slips cordon that was completely stacked.
In previous years those would be ones that Labs just ignores and leaves to go through to the keeper until the balls is dead and then he picks up his scoring rate.
