BHQ's Team of the Decade Announced

Let's put it this way.

Locky was the best fullback we had all decade, and the best five-eighth. Nobody can argue with that.

The second best fullback was without doubt Karmichael Hunt (hell, he's the only other fullback the Broncos used full time).

The second best five-eighth is a choice from very mediocre options:
- Ben Ikin (good in 2000/early 2001 then injury curtailed his career)
- Shaun Berrigan (had a good 2002 at five-eighth outside Langer, but had good stints at centre, hooker and halfback too, hence his place as the best utility)
- Kevin Walters (had a short stint at five-eighth early in 2000 before Ben Walker was dropped from halfback)

So really, Ben Ikin was the second best five-eighth of the decade.

Karmichael Hunt's contribution to the Broncos far exceeded Ikin's, therefore Hunt at fullback, Lockyer five-eighth.

It simply can't be argued any other way.

i know what youre saying, but i feel that as a team of the decade, the best player of the decade for us should be in the position that he was the best at - fullback.

which is fine when the individual is lockyer.

i also dont think it would be, as we were a much better team with him at fullback than we are with him at five-eigth. from fullback he did all the 5/8th work, didnt have the added tackling strain, and he got to do his 'best in the business' kick returns. its sad because i cant even remember the last time lockyer made a line break like he did back in those days :(

Locky isnt the young flying player he used to be his the older wise bloke who puts guys thru the line now. And Speaking of kick returns Hunt had some awesome take no bull returns ones that i loved watching.

now think of this

Walters @ 5/8
Berrigan @5/8
Ikin @ 5/8

Hunt @ Fb

which player out of them deserves to be in the team? At the said positions Hunt deserves it the most. so its fitting that Hunt gets his spot.

Hunts kick returns were just stupid. easiest kick returns to defend against because you knew what he was doing and where he was going - nothing, and straight at you. they just lined him up and hammered him every time.

i would think that walters at 5/8th and lockyer at fullback is the best combination. the best player should be in his best position.

pre 2000 Locky was best at Fullback yes but since then i believe he has done alot more at 5/8.

Show some hunt love just once, it wont kill you.

screw origin this is about the Broncos! so that 2001 Origin match is pointless but in saying that he had 1 of the best seasons by any players standards in 2006 at 5/8

I think some people aren't considering the "2000 and beyond" aspect when picking their team members.

If it was a team of the 90s, I'd have no issue with Lockyer at FB and Walters a 5/8, but in terms of 2000 and beyond, I can't see how A) you could have Walters in the team at 5/8 and B) how you couldn't have Lockyer in the team at 5/8.

watch the 2001 origin and tell me that wasnt lockyer at his best. he was outstanding for the broncos that year, 2002 as well.

For sure mate.

BUT - I have to disagree with you Anonymous on Locky at FB for the team of the decade. It just does NOT make sense and in fact it would almost be injust for Hunt not to be there. Hate him or not - he's served the Broncs VERY well (imo) in the 2nd half of this decade. Honestly - he's been a very important player for the team and he thoroughly deserves his spot.

No they weren't stupid. His kick returns were effective. He'd run straight into the defence in the middle of the park and get a quick play the ball. That allowed our forwards to get back on side quicker to take a hit up.
getting a dominant tackle against you doesnt help your team. thats what he did 9 times out of 10 on the kick return.

For the 90s, agreed.

But this is the 2000-2009 Broncos FFS. Wally was a better 5/8 than Walters every single day of the week, but I'll still pick Walters in a best-ever Broncs team because he did more for the Broncos.

And Getting bailed into touch on a return cause your hugging the sideline doesnt help your team either, Id rather know my fullback is gonna get the play the ball going then bite my nails hoping he doesnt a) Get bailed into touch cause he tried to sprint down the side or b) hand the ball over cause he panicked and threw it in.

Forget about his kick returns, people should never underrate Hunt's contribution in our second man play.

He was essentially the one doing the playmaking. Lockyer just shoveled the ball out to Hunt, who then had the option of either kicking, passing or taking the line on. And, in his latter few years especially, he always took the right option - lightyears ahead of Slater in this department.

We scored a ton of points thanks to the second man play and specifically because of Hunt's role in the play.
