DARIUS Boyd has declared he is ready to captain the Broncos and has begun talks on a new deal to finish his career in Brisbane.
Boyd will skipper the Broncos at the NRL Nines starting Saturday at Eden Park and on Friday revealed he had no intention of emulating halfback Ben Hunt by walking out on the club.
Boyd is off contract after this season and could attract offers of $800,000 a season after an outstanding 2016 campaign that franked him as the NRL’s No. 1 fullback.
While Broncos coach Wayne Bennett is eyeing a new leadership regime after Corey Parker’s retirement, Boyd insists his heart is with the Broncos.
The 29-year-old claimed a year ago that he was not captaincy material but now hopes his Nines cameo leads to his formal appointment as Broncos skipper.
“I’m ready for the captaincy,” Boyd said.
“Being captain is something that is still foreign to me and something I will be learning if I do get the job.
“I would be learning on the run a bit, but we have a great leadership group to help out.
“Adam Blair, Sammy Thaiday, Andrew McCullough, Ben Hunt and Gillo (Matt Gillett), there are heaps of guys who lead by example and do some great things so whoever gets the role will have good support.
“Wayne hasn’t told me if I’ve got the job. He likes to keep those things close to his chest and reveal it as late as possible.
“I’m happy just to have my name thrown up among some past and great players. There hasn’t been a lot of Broncos captains so to even have my name mentioned is something I wouldn’t have thought of a few years ago.’’
The upside of Hunt’s departure to the Dragons next season is the additional funds under the salary cap for the Broncos to retain Boyd and star pivot Anthony Milford.
Boyd turns 30 in July and said he was content to finish his career at the Broncos after stints at the Dragons and Newcastle.
“I don’t have too many years left so I’d like to sign a new deal and finish my career at the Broncos,’’ he said
“We have a lot of players off contract this season so hopefully we can keep all of them here.’’
Boyd is at the peak of his powers after inspiring Australia to Four Nations glory in November and is primed to continue that form at the Nines.
“It’s a great competition for the game and the fans,” he said.
“I wasn’t sure if I would be picked because I had a late finish last year, but Wayne wanted some old heads here at the Nines.”
