THE Brisbane Broncos repeatedly hid bad off-field player behaviour from the State Government as their $1 million sponsorship deal disintegrated.

Queensland Transport documents, obtained under Freedom of Information laws by Channel 7, reveal the department decided not to renew the three-year deal last year after a series of contract breaches as the Broncos brand was tarnished by player controversies.

The department fined the club $33,400 in 2006 after player Neville Costigan was convicted of drink-driving and Greg Eastwood was convicted of driving without a licence.

The Broncos, once again, failed to notify the department of the incident before it became public knowledge (as the contract stipulated), a Queensland Transport briefing note said.

The documents show the Broncos also refused to provide the Government with the club code of conduct after two players were sacked over an assault in 2007.

who cares, their are sponsors lining up i'm sure.

I don't think the bad behaviour is the real reason for them withdrawing the sponsorship, it's probably because the government is in debt & they couldn't afford it.

Trust me Kaz - the player behaviour was the direct reason, the non-notification just gave them an easier excuse so they weren't seen to be judging the players themselves. And there are also other (minor) sponsors that have not renewed over the past couple of seasons directly because of player behaviour.

EDITED BY JEB.

If the Broncos take that attitude "meh, sponsor goes, sponsor comes" it's only so long before there ISN'T another sponsor coming along. And uh oh, spaghettio, we're Parramatta, in debt and with a shithouse football team.

So tell me, do you go out and get drunk, drive a car and piss on a wall?

Too far mate. That wasn't warranted.

Nothing major will happen to either Kenny or Michaels. I don't know what the **** the club sees in Michaels anymore, but he'll stay on. Kenny is the next big prop for the club, they won't get rid of him, or do anything drastic.

They should BOTH be released for a breach of conduct. It doesn't matter what they did, they bought a bad name to the club, because they decided they wanted to go and get pissed.

**** them. Are they that stupid?

And if sponsors are so easy to find, how come we haven't been able to replace the Qld Govt sponsorship as yet?

And even if they were lining up (which they aren't) anyone who has been involved with anything needing sponsors knows it requires about a thousand times less work to keep and service an existing sponsor than to attract and service a new sponsor.

True, I apologise. He's not as bad as Aron Lal was.

nick kenny? really?

As mentioned numerous times, player behaviour not neccessarily better or worse than a few years ago, but the scrutiny has increased beyond proportions. Something the players have to deal with of course, it's just harsh because they are grading 18 year old kids these days...

We've had some bad light on the Broncs over the past two years that is for sure.

If you don't know what their contract states, or the Broncos code of conduct, how can you make such a statement?

Regardless of this, and taking your hardline stance on other players who have given the club a bad name over the past 12-18 months, would you like to see a broncos team without Hunt, Michaels, Hodges, Thaiday, Kenny, Lockyer and Wallace. How well do you think the team would go this year without them?

Do you think they would lose more sponsorship by a few of the team occasionally making stupid, yet in most cases, harmless, minor mistakes, or if the Broncos were running near the bottom of the ladder? Given the punishment handed out to these players, I'm assuming Broncos management think the latter

I certainly don't think these players should be released. A fine is probably sufficient, but I think given the "we're not taking any of this crap anymore" statement late last year after Toiletgate they should be stood down for this week.

I agree with Coxy about this, but only because the club came out so strong and said what they said. By not standing them down for a week they just look like hypocritical nuff nuffs now. But imo, in particular what Kenny did does not warrant being stood down, a fine would be sufficient. According to the information supplied by the police he was mildly intoxicated, so it is not as if he went and got smashed. Re Michaels, we just do not know what the circumstances are, but if the Club was too stick too its guns, both should have been stood down for one week.

Yeah a fine and a week in reserve grade is what I would have hoped for but isn't gonna happen. I wish the club would enforce season long drinking bans, FFS these guys are playing the game they love for a living for very good money how is it so hard to stay out of trouble? I LOL'ed at broncospwn's comment about sponsors, financial times such as these sponsors don't grow on trees having a sponsor leave like that is terrible news and I am sure Bruno is furious because he knows the players and officials are to blame.

Agree with this.

Rather embarassing on the clubs behalf that they are seemingly not going to take any action after that statement last year.

Everyone knows they hide bad player behaviour, is it really that surprising?...what professional sporting organisation doesnt?

Im sure almost every1 here would know a story or two... the thing is i prefer to follow the league not the gossip!

WOW, you just injected some common sense in this thread, every single club hides player behavoir, these days though it's a lot harder.
The sponsor didn't exactly pull out, the contract finished they didn't renew, it's tough times financially, it's hard to blame them for not re-signing, and there is no quote from the sponsors so it's obvious that it's simply speculation that the sponsrs pulled out ebcause the broncos are hiding palyer behavoir which is perfect timing with the nick kenny, micheals incident.

Another well thought out decision from Bruno. Well done mate.
