AFL Brisbane Lions - 2025 AND 2024 Premiers

Yeah there's no excuse for what happened last night. He shouldn't have played plain and simple but I do feel a little bit sorry for Voss (the coach) here.

Voss is under immense pressure for his job. Carlton are a huge club and they are heading backwards. Voss is a dead man walking and he's tried to make a statement by dropping the reigning best and fairest winner and back in his players to stand up for him.

Hollands said he is fine, almost pleaded with Voss to trust him and Voss has done so. He's basically tried to be a good coach and back his player and show faith in him and it has just gone completely wrong. Hollands shouldn't have played and the fact he did will only make matters worse now for all involved.

Everyone has made the wrong call here and now this guy's mental health will be even worse as he is being panned by all and sundry. Just a terrible situation all round.

I get he may have pleaded with the coach to play him ahead of the game and got himself picked or whatever. But for not one of the literal team of 'medical experts', training and support team Carlton would have to say pre match during warmups, hey this guy really isn't fit to play. That's damning. Didn't help Voss by playing, didn't help the club by playing and hasn't helped himself by playing. That decision clearly needed to be taken out of hands.

For sure, it was the wrong call from everyone. I guess this is what happens to a club and coach under immense pressure, they make really bad decisions like this.

Far out. What a game but lions should have won that

There's sickness through the camp and injuries in game as well. We were nowhere near our best, so did well to get that close. These results happen at this time of year. One thing everyone knows too is that the Lions don't need to make top four to win the thing, they just need to get there and get troops back.

It’s just frustrating when we don’t kick the set shots at goal and it ends up costing us. But yes, With the wild card thing this season, we just need to be healthy and firing at and of regular season.

Yeah very annoying, same thing cost us against the Dogs earlier this season and Adelaide last year.

That Lions loss would have killed a lot of perfect rounds and multi's. Mine included lol

Did I hear correctly they are saying he had another episode during that match? It is still crazy to me he was left out there during that.

What happened?
I can only give you the little I have heard and even read in here, but the short of it is he is a player that has a bit of history with mental health, and was delisted at some point in 2025.

Carlton have brought him back this year. Coach and club are struggling, took a gamble I guess you would say on him.

From the clips I saw and bits of the game, he was wayyyy out of it. Weird hand gestures, odd movements, not able to get involved in the game. He ended up playing 60% of the match with no touches of the ball etc, something clearly going on. He looked under the influence basically.

Club has now said he suffered a mental health episode during the game from what I gather, and sounds like they are going to cop a fine or something of the sort for how it was all handled and letting him play/continue to play.

@tommy This is a good summary. The only extra bit to add is that there is believed to be a bit of history with substances too. It's also been said it was clear before the game he wasn't in a fit state to play but they still let him play anyway.

The coach is under immense pressure, he's basically a dead man walking and it seems he has basically screwed up by letting him play. It just seems like every dumb decision that could have been made was made.

Thanks guys, I don’t get too much into afl until finals and Carlton is my team. Born there. Only reason why.

Unfortunate they look like they are heading into a significant rebuild.

Eh. They have been rebuilding since 1995 or a yr or 2 afterwards. At least I still have the broncos.

It’s such a shame, it looked they were going somewhere and then the floor fell away. They are the hardest ones to take I think so good on you sticking by them. Hopefully they choose the right person with the next coach. It’s a big club so I think it will be an attractive gig for other coaches.
