Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

Welch would be a great pick up, but I think it would start to throw our cap out of balance again.

Haas has been upgraded to $850k or so (replaces Lodge's big contract), Capewell has come in on $600k or so (effectively TPJ's contract)... so bringing in Welch on a presumably large contract just starts to put too much of our cap into the pack. Especially when you consider upgrades to Riki and Piakura, on top of Flegler.

I think the next big investment has to be in the spine rather than the support players.

Here’s one for the gossip columnists - a replacement for Haas?

The only problem with signing Welch is that it'd mean we're resigned to starting Carrigan at lock for the foreseeable future.

A starting middle trio of Welch, Haas & Carrigan is obviously very good, but I can't help but feel that it's a tad one dimensional. Welch has a great offload in him, but he's far from a ball-player.

Outside of a couple of passes at the line near the end of the season from Haas, there really isn't any form of ball-playing amongst that trio. It's no coincidence that the top 6 teams this season all have at least one middle forward who's capable of squaring up the defence and then making the decision to run, play it short, or play it out the back.

What we really need is to find our version of Yeo / Murray / Radley / B.Smith / J.Trbojevic, not another hard working prop.

I'd say heathrington will be that guy , bit more size and I think he's more than capable.

If you can get Welch for anywhere near <600k then it’s a great idea.
I doubt we will pay big $$ for another prop , I'd say we'll look at James or similar and replace them with Welch in 23.

Don’t think James is gonna except a one year deal from reports. Either way I’m sure the club will figure it out.

Bummer to hear that we almost had Welch this coming season if the stars signed just a little better.

He needs a lot more than size to be anything close to those guys I named. Great defensively, but offers very little in attack.

Besides, in this hypothetical, who are we benching to start Hetherington at lock? Carrigan? Won't happen.

Wild one, but I actually think Staggs could be a pretty good lock. Similar type build to B.smith in a little short and nuggety. Dynamic speed etc. if we wanted him closer to the action I’d put him at lock, not 6. Particularly with the way the game currently is where it’s basically speed up the middle wins the game.

That’s what annoys me so much about Haas doing the 5th tackle hit up. If you look at our good sets he’s done a hit up on 3rd or 4th tackle. So often this year he did a hit up on 5th, gets us on the front foot but it’s completely wasted because we have to kick.

He's heavier than 3 of those you mentioned and plays hooker/lock exactly the same as Radley and Smith, s how is he not similar?

He'd be perfect for hass and Carrigan could definitely mould himself to be a similar player.
8. Welch
10. Hass
11. Riki
12. Capewell
13. Heathrington

15. Carrigan
16 Flegler
17. Robati/ Piakura
Piakura will almost 100% be the second rower by then. Also reckon Flegler will be shown the door.

more like:
8. Welch
10: Haas
11. Piakura
12. Capewell
13. Hetho
15. Carrigan
16. Willison
17. Robati

a bit more likely in my opinion and considering Carrigan is our future captain, chances are he isn’t going to be moved out of Lock. Just my opinion, but I wouldn’t be getting your hopes up he gets moved to prop or the bench any time soon.

From memory Welch is one of the best offloaders in the comp. Haas is just a menace and I think Carrigan can work a pass and offload into his game

Possibly

I completely agree I mentioned this last year/ start of this year but I just don’t think it’s in our best interest at the moment

Direct swap of Carrigan for Welch with cash Melbourne's way (they love cash)?

I think Welch is a good idea. Personally I don’t see us buying a 6 with Mam coming through, they seem to have put all there eggs in the niu/Cobbo fullback basket and I can’t see us getting a hooker worthwhile of not developing Mozer alongside Reynolds. So to get an experienced front rower who I think is on the underrated side (for his ability) would be great. Than we have the left over cap for a few upgrades here and there for some youngsters
