Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

Sounds to me like he’s pretty interested in Redcliffe

He and his management reportedly were demanding upgrades of $1 million a year for this year and $1.2 million for 2024 alone when he had his little hissy fit and asked to leave.
I understand the % of cap and how the cap goes up etc. Maybe $1M is where the cream of the crop props get paid. Ok.
This whole we could build a team around him talk though…hmm..props play about 60mins a game.
look at the rorters, the riff, or Storm. They all have great forwards built around a SPINE.
We have the future in Mozer, Mam and Walsh. Add a 7 in there who picks himself and that’s what you build a team around.
Would we have won a premiership with Lazarus and no Walters/Langer?
The knights with The Chief and no Johns?
The Riff with JFH and no Cleary?

In saying that, it’s a fickle thing managing a roster and money.
Look at the Knights currently. They poured $1.4M into a suspected coke head and he has about as much influence on their results as wet fart.

I always get a little concerned when a player starts coming out with quotes like " I'm here for another 2 years ". We have heard that before with Fifita and Coates.

Pats comments are also a little worrying, like there has been a conversation about him moving on.

Hopefully, its nothing.

I want to love cobbo but I think he's going to turn into a lazy footballer. He looks a leg slower this year and really has done nothing to impress me. Hope I'm wrong
I would let Cobbo go right now if we could.

The comments from Haas say he's going to be staying.

He said being coached by Wayne was pretty special, but that's done and now he has a lot of love for Kevvie and what he's trying to do at the club.

And with Wayne essentially a non-issue after next year - unless something amazing happens, when the Bromwich bros retire, that club is going to have a few tough years. Most clubs struggle post Bennett.

That's a new one for you ... you usually think all our players will sign with the Roosters.

They’ll come hard as well. I don’t see Payne staying, very happy to be proven wrong.

Quick question. In the last few years, have you ever seen any of our players staying

Yes, Cobbo, Flegler and Herbie, so I’m not a great guide to go on, I’m about as accurate as the best NRL ref.

I take your point about not needing to build a team around a prop if you have 3/4 of the spine as good players but premierships are still won with an equally good forward leader(s)

We had Langer and Walters/Lewis for 4 years and didn't come really close (maybe 1990 but got smacked by both grand finalists in the semis) to a premiership. It wasn't until Lazzo that we broke through and i would argue that Webke and Civo were integral to our other GF wins.

Harrigan was immense for the Knights in 1997 in both leadership (A Johns was early 20's and needed to be constantly pulled into lone) and general play.

JFH was similar for Penrith, a hard bastard who allows the spine to operate with go forward. Also has the extra workload of team enforcer and protector of players like Luai and Chrichton that most opposition want to beat the shit out of.

JWH also does it for Easts.

IMO you could swap the players around in your questions and get similar answers...

Definitely good points. I guess for us that leader of the pack is Patty. Future captain too. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to keep Payne, just not at “any cost”. He is an amazing player, but for how much?!

I agree, i'm fine with players wanting the bigger salary. I'd want it as well. I just think its a bit silly to say he owes us nothing. Like i said before, if you put all the incidents Payne has had here, and swap them with a player called, i dont know, Logan Bayliss-Brow, i doubt he keeps his job as a Broncos player.

Sound like a broken record probably, but i'd like to see us do what we used to and take a little less to keep the squad together. Plenty of them carry on about wanting to stay here and play finals with their mates, but when push comes to show not many of them back it up when they can earn more money.

That`s a very long bow you are stretching there .
LBB vs Payne Haas ? They are not even in the same post code as far as ability and achievements .

How old is LBB ? How old was Haas on debut ?

That's utter rubbish. If you are a club with integrity your achievements on the field should have nothing to do with how you are treated. Payne has got away with stuff a lesser player wouldn't have. Simple as that. We have had players in the past done far less severe things than Payne and got the boot. Trying to excuse his behaviour based on performance on field is laughable.

Integrity ?
Thought it was about winning premierships ?

That`s what they get paid for .

Growth and redemption are the new integrity .

You don't win premierships without standards.

You are clearly missing the point anyway. LBB doesn't get to keep his job as a Bronco if he drags the clubs name negatively into the media on 7 different occasions like Payne has done. You treat everyone the same if you want a good culture.
