Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

Badel:

"Broncos will move to extend the contract of star prop Payne Haas as rivals including the Dolphins close in. Haas is Brisbane’s highest-paid player on $848,000 this season and he underlined his value yet again with another barnstorming display in the Broncos’ 40-18 slaying of the Dragons on Saturday night."
Haas:

“I am here for another two years. I really enjoy Kevvie. He is always there for me. I’ve got a good relationship with Kev. I’m just here to try and play good footy under him. He has been really good for me, especially when I’ve had a few things go on with off-field dramas."
"I’ve got nothing but love for Kev. He’s a real good coach and really cares for us."
“I have got lots of respect for Wayne. He was the reason I came to the Broncos. I was legit about to sign the contract that was on the table at the Storm. Wayne called me at the last minute and made the last pitch to me. Thanks to Wayne I am at Brisbane. I haven’t looked back since. Being coached by Wayne Bennett is pretty special. I just wanted to stay at Brisbane for Wayne but that’s done ... now I’m enjoying Kev.”
“We have marked this derby on our calendar and we really want to win it. It is pretty special. No-one would have picked the Dolphins being 3-0 at the start of the year but it has happened now. You don’t need any more motivation than a derby game, especially the Battle of Brisbane against a team coached by Wayne Bennett. They are going to be up for this. He loves getting one over the Broncos. They are going to be ready for us and we just have to match them.”

Donuts:

“I have only known Payne since I have been here and he has hugely impressed me with his professionalism and incredible work ethic and incredible engine. He is incredibly popular amongst the group. Kevvie has supported and backed him into the leadership group and it’s an area that we have clearly seen him really blossom as a player and person.”

Carrigan:

“It would be pretty cool if Payne stayed. The thought that me and Payno could be playing in different jerseys is something I don’t want to happen. Payne typifies what this club is about. As a club, if we can build around Payne, you know your standards will be safe in terms of football culture. I would love to play out my career with Payne here. We want to win a comp together. If he chooses to go somewhere else, I would understand, but I don’t want him to go.”

He could yet prove me wrong, but I think the events of the last 12 months have been a real wake up call for Payne; getting booed at Suncorp, the early release gambit blowing up in his face, the drama with Albert Kelly's shiny new shoes and then worst of all, the shit with his mother. All of that may have been the trigger for a lot of growing up as an individual, perhaps a bit TOO quickly for his own good.

We may yet see his destiny take a dramatic turn into one club territory provided his agent isn't stupid with the demands.

I agree.

although it could be something as simple as he found out that if he wanted that halves money as a prop ... he'd have to go to a team like the Tigers.

though i do think it is probably closer to your scenario though.

Dogs…

You can, and we will.

In the new cap the best forwards in the game will be 1m players, and Payne is in that class.

He wanted that under the old cap, can see him going somewhere for a ridiculous amount.

We're both guessing but I think he re-signs long term same as Patty. Haas has always wanted to play finals, if we crash and burn, I think he'll sign elsewhere, if we actually are successful this year, I think he'll re-sign.

$1 million on the new cap would take up roughly the same amount of the cap he’s taking up on the current cap.

I don’t see any issue. If there is an increase on the percentage of the cap he’s taking up, it’s very little.

Its not about being salty about last year. I think he owes us, lesser players would have been kicked out of the Broncos a long time ago for some of the crap he has done while at this club.

I can't subscribe to the theory he owes us, when we were the worst team in the NRL he was one of the few rolling up the sleeves and having a go.

Sure, he tried to get out of a contract, he wanted more money. I can forgive him for that, we all want more money.

no one was prepared to offer him what he was demanding last time.

that, combined with the changes in his personal situation, combined with him growing up some, combined with playing footy with his best mate in a team on the rise = him staying for a fair offer, IMO.

besides, those demands before were likely manufactured by his new management as justification for a release so they could get their slice of the pie.

I see someone like the Tigers offering him 1.5m a year, and him taking it. Rugby could also have a big play at him.

He was overpayed from the start of his contract, he wasnt complaining then. So because he made a lot of meters we forget he lost his license through speeding. Or he got caught driving unlicensed, unsupervised and on his phone ( the dumb must run in the family ). Or his failure to co operate with the NRL. Or his pathetic carry on towards the police. Or his overreaction to a bloke standing on his shoes. Or his willingness to put himself before the team and have a hand in derailing our season.

Yeah, he owes us nothing 🙄

I reckon his management will be an issue. He was dumb enough to go along with them last year, and they are still his management. I cant see them wanting anything less than the $1.2 they were chasing then. Most sensible things Payne could do is distance himself from his family and get rid of that management team.

Yeah, unfortunately as we saw with Dave Fifita before him, in this day and age, it's all about that sweet cash money.

Sadly, the amount of care and support a club provides to a player seems to count for very little. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, but mostly it's a business these days.

Not having a go at the players that go after the bigger pay packet, the majority of us would probably do the same.

I reckon you need a back locked in too. Is Cobbo it?
I want to love cobbo but I think he's going to turn into a lazy footballer. He looks a leg slower this year and really has done nothing to impress me. Hope I'm wrong

I agree, i'm fine with players wanting the bigger salary. I'd want it as well. I just think its a bit silly to say he owes us nothing. Like i said before, if you put all the incidents Payne has had here, and swap them with a player called, i dont know, Logan Bayliss-Brow, i doubt he keeps his job as a Broncos player.

Sound like a broken record probably, but i'd like to see us do what we used to and take a little less to keep the squad together. Plenty of them carry on about wanting to stay here and play finals with their mates, but when push comes to show not many of them back it up when they can earn more money.

Just like Hodges - Cobbo LOOKS slow, but isn't. Last season he burned quite a few wingers - even if he's a bit slow to get going at the start of the season he finds his grove. Give him a month or so.

I would’ve said Herbie but since he’s gone there’s only 3 to choose from and despite his huge potential I have very little confidence in Cobbo’s long term success at this stage. Red flags.

Wouldn’t be mad about it being Staggs if he keeps evolving his game .

Hopefully we dont go back to rewarding players for potential or for holding us to ransom. If they have a really good season, reward them.
