“Patty (Carrigan), we’re best mates and train hard next to each other and I feel like we know each other’s in and outs, playing off Patty it’s pretty easy. Happy with the second half there.”

Happy to hear this from Payne and should help with retention.

When considering signing/keeping players we need to remember a few things:

1) Anyone taking the cash elsewhere - great, go.
2) Anyone “not happy or not paid enough” - great, go.

We’re building a successful, winning team of men who will fight for one another.
We have players like Walsh, Patty and Co who want to be here and are proud to be Broncos.
Everyone is on notice!
The Premiership Train is leaving the station, if you’re not on board, feel free to show yourself out.

Love to keep Payne but it can't be a million dollars a season for a forward. That's not even a Payne Haas thing that's just the way it has to be. You can't spend that much money on a forward.

he is probably close to that now if his contract has that ratchet clause with the cap going up

Yeah crazy what happens when his minutes are managed correctly
The big sign the team has improved is when you look at options for captain. It's only two years since Turpin was the best option. Now we have half a dozen contenders.

But for me, what we've really been lacking is offloading forwards. Every team that menaces, that racks up the big scores, does it on the back of offloads. That might be us soon.

I wouldnt pay Payne a million, no way in hell. Pat should be the benchmark for what we pay a forward.

He ran the ball hard on those two offloads, too. If he's added an offload + runs like he wants to bust the line then he is worth around 1 mil these days.

And what's that benchmark?
Its about $800-850k. If Payne is genuine about wanting to win a premiership with his mates at Brisbane, he cant hold the club to ransom for a massive salary, especially with all the drama that comes along with him, his clueless management and his horrible family. Carrigan would have easily got more money elsewhere but i think he is a man of his word and wants to stay and win premierships with his mates at the Broncos, so he's still getting extremely well paid but sacrificing a little so we can spend a bit more elsewhere.

After the shit he has done over the years, if Payne is genuine with what he says, i think he should do the same. If he is just out for the biggest payday he can get ( and as i always say, you cant blame people for chasing the money ), good for him, just dont dress it up as anything else. Dont pretend you are this big team player who wants to be a leader if you are just out for yourself. Sometimes players do have to sacrifice sometimes for the good of the team. We used to have it here, hopefully it can come back because regardless of what i think of the person he's got the potential to dominate for years if he keeps evolving as a player and i'd like it to be at Brisbane.

Disagree, Haas is worth a million easily. considering 1 million now is less than 800k last year with the new cap as a percentage of total cap.

I dont think he is regardless of the cap. This is a bloke who didnt think twice about derailing our progress last year for his own selfish ends. As i just said, he talks the talk about wanting to stay at the Broncos and play and win premierships with his mates. He should be like his best mate and walk the walk.

Last year was bad but just being salty about it and say that should take a few 100k off his value isn't realistic or living in the real world, it's not like other top teams are not spending big parts of their cap on forwards as well.

It should be noted with Players like Walsh and Reynolds it would be quite easy to rack up big 3rd party deals to take alot of their wage to offset.

Agreed, that decision to hold the club hostage as part of negotiations was telling. Poor character both from his management and from him, shows exactly where the priorities are... unfortunately!

You need to make a stand against players who place themselves above the club.. It's obviously a balancing act and you do need to think with nuance, however making a stand can pay off in spades... look at how Milf was treated and how the Grit have responded.

Its not about being salty about last year. I think he owes us, lesser players would have been kicked out of the Broncos a long time ago for some of the crap he has done while at this club.

Couldnt care less what other clubs do really. He isnt going to want to be paid a million a year, he made it clear he wasnt happy with a million. He and his management reportedly were demanding upgrades of $1 million a year for this year and $1.2 million for 2024 alone when he had his little hissy fit and asked to leave. He's not going to be happy with a million a year, which is already a ridiculous salary for him anyway imo, he will be looking at closer to the $1.2 million.

Why should we expect Carrigan, who is probably more important to us anyway, and has excelled in Origin which Payne hasnt yet, to take less money than he would have easily got elsewhere so Payne can get overpayed? As i said earlier, the best teams have multiple players who are prepared to all sacrifice a little to keep the better players. If he is chasing anything near like he was looking at last year, thats going to be $2 million a year on 2 props. Thats not practical. I think in the next few months we will see how much desire he has to stay and win things with his mates or how much he just wants money. I still believe there can be a balance of the two if he is willing to give a little.
