Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2025

In the current tactics it seems like a lot of a team's attack is getting generated by second rowers... and we've been trying to operate without even above average second rowers who are invisible in attack.

The current trend also appears to be big agile second rowers as well (Haumole, Katoa, Kikau, etc.)... even Luciano to an extent. Angus and Martin aren't massive second rowers, but they are super physical so if they get the ball in yardage they are making a lot of post contact meters, have the arm free for an offload, etc.

They need to be able to man handle the opposition half if they get 1v1... as that draws in help from the second rower and/or centre to stop the ball, which creates disruption in the defence.

Piakura is physical and runs a great line, but in the current league landscape... he might be a bit undersized at 102kg? (It might explain why he gets physical impact injuries)

He runs a 100 miles an hour, but is he able to man handle the opposition half?

Angus doesn't run full steam into the defence... he gets the arm out and just holds the defender off him until help arrives or he can pop the offload.

Fifita is that exact mould of the current second rower... so I think if there is an opportunity to get him then we should, but we are potentially tying ourselves to Staggs and Cobbo instead.

If that's the case then is there a way for us to use them as substitutes for what top tier backrowers are currently providing teams.

Can we run something where Staggs is running Riki's line at the half instead of waiting out the back of shape... I'd love to see us dropping Staggs or Cobbo back under and have them go back at the middle defence.

If there is one player that loves manhandling the opposition it's Cobbo... I want to see our coaching put him into situations that allow him to do that.

If we are planning to spend budget on Staggs and Cobbo, then we need to figure out how best to utilise them to offset the lack of second rowers we have.

In terms of the forwards that we do have the coaching needs to figure out how best to utilise them.

Riki isn't at all physical... but he's quick... I definitely think he should be able to run the plays we used to do with Capewell where he runs overs and the centre runs the crash line. I would still also want to see him as a target on cross field kicks like Gavin Cooper.

Haas has been getting runs wider... but even then he can end up treating it like a normal middles hit up where he attracts 3 defenders, but eventually they slow him down and get him to the ground. I want to see Haas angled back infield in a way that suits his carry... when he runs across the face of the defence with that arm out ready to fend... he's like Andrew Fifita, but running about 3 times as fast and more agile... that is super dangerous.

Xavier is potentially the big physical forward to use on the edge, so that might will be interesting to keep track of.

Piakura runs great lines... at some point someone other than Reece might actually pass it to him.

Mmmmmmnope. I don't care if he's coming for 200k, Fifita is exactly the player archetype we want to move away from.

You really wanna poison the well further just to maybe save this season? I dunno man, seems kind of desperate.

I think we need them gone for Reyno. Unless we can move on Madden, and Paix for him? Filling the squad would be hard.
Don't see paix here beyond this year and madden be smart to look around too, think we will lose a few at the end of this year

David Fifita being shopped around at a steep discount, according to the papers.
Despite coming 5th, we have scored the most points of any team this season.

We don’t need a lazy player with some attacking highlights. Our attack is mostly fine, and the things that are wrong with it aren’t things Dave can fix.

We just need a handful of fellas that can actually defend and hold onto the ball.

I'm probably going to at max give Staggs 600k. Ideally around 500-550.

As good as Staggs is, we're not getting 750k value out of him.

Whatever our gameplan is, we don't seem to really need top tier star centers. Just guys who can do a job week in, week out.

I only see two centers worth close to that coin, and thats Crighton and Herbie.

Also, feels like Kobe could be replaced by someone from QCup real easily.

We need to start paying people on their defense, not just their highlight reels.

And make meters in yardage sets

I would take David Fifita is a heart beat if he's price is slashed. We need 2nd rowers especially representative level.
Maguire is a coach that can get the best out of him if anyone.
Is this the same coach that’s getting the best Reece Walsh?

Funnily enough, our left side attack seemed better with jetski running at backrow. He was scoring tries and Arthars was also cashing in. Was he the only one the trained at backrow in the off season?

Gos was really good at making himself a legitimate option to the ball runner, seem to be running great lines and timing them well.

There were a couple times he needed a bit more power or speed, because he got brought down by a last effort tackle.

Apparently it's 2.4mill over 4 years

pretty good value i think about right

scratch that says 3 years 800k a year waaaay to much money

Let's say Badels contract figures are correct, Staggs will actually be taking up less of the salary cap in his new contract than his old.

His current contract started in 2022, reportedly $750k a year. In 2022 the salary cap was $9.6 million or 7.8% of the salary cap.

His new contract would start in 2026, where the salary cap will be $11.9 million ... So a salary of $800k equates to 6.7% of the salary cap

Maths doesn't lie 😉
