BRONCOS stars have told Wayne Bennett they’re mentally ready for a six week surge to a grand final and don’t need any time off as they build momentum for a finals campaign.

Bennett flagged plans to rest stars over the final two rounds with their top four finish secured with the master coach wary of major injuries striking like it has at other clubs like Sydney Roosters and North Queensland.

Halfback Ben Hunt, five-eighth Anthony Milford and hooker Andrew McCullough are the only players to play every game this season and given their importance to a premiership assault could be likely contenders for a week in the grandstand.

Hunt admitted his body could use one week off ahead of the NRL finals but mentally he wanted to play as Brisbane build towards something special.

“The body wouldn’t mind a week off but in the head you never want a week off,” Hunt said.

“You want to be out there with your mates and playing footy every week. You just have to do the best you can during the week, recover and get the body right.

“We’re in a position where we are going to finish top four and that is the luxury we’ve got at the moment.

“If someone has a niggling injury or something they want to get fixed for the finals we are able to do that which is really good for us.”

The only fresh injury concern to come out of Brisbane’s 12-10 loss to the Sydney Roosters was the knees into the back copped by fullback Darius Boyd and his sore jaw after a high hit from Dylan Napa.

Boyd said he would need to ice his back all week to be ready to play South Sydney on Thursday night, but thankfully had avoided major issues from the hit.

“If it was higher up it would be a problem. I knew straight away that I was breathing pretty well but it was just painful and I think it was just a bad cork,” Boyd said.

Broncos forward Sam Thaiday said the players were prepared to push on without taking time off knowing how close they were to the ultimate goal.

“In my head I know if we want to go all the way we have five weeks of footy then I can kick up the feet and relax,” he said.

“No one knows what’s going on in Wayne’s head except him. It is a fantastic idea. We have some tough games with Souths and the Storm, if we can have players fresh and rested to go it will help our cause.

“The end goal is to be in a grand final and hopefully holding that trophy up. That is our little cake, our little bit of glory at the end of it all so we have to get through the next few weeks.”

The Broncos have opted to stay in Sydney between games, making the short turnaround a bonding camp at Coogee so the players can unite and prepare for the next two weeks before finals.

When they met South Sydney in round one they were thumped 36-6 but this Broncos team is far different and more confident in their ability to match it with the best.

Hunt said he was ready for the business end of the season knowing his team was playing much better football than any previous finals campaign.

“We’ve come a long way since the start of the season,” Hunt said.

“Obviously we’re in a better position than we were last year. We’re playing a more controlled game now, we were a bit all over the shop last year and we weren’t playing a tough brand of football like we are now.

“We just need to grind games out, hang in there and take opportunities when we get them.”

Great attitude... But i would still be resting guys with niggles.

I would definitely rest Boyd from Thursdays game ... Give him plenty of recovery from the knees in the back and high shot

Hopefully a rest for both that, and to watch ball returns, and how to hit the line hard, and not just fall over like a little bitch every time.

I don't knew the boys going a little off the gas at present, we have big match players who will turn it on when they need to in a couple of weeks time.

Parker is being held together with tape at the moment. He needs a week off.

Parker and Boyd a week off. Reed back(?), Kahu to FB and .... hang on, do we have anyone left???? :)

Yeah it makes sense to rest Parker, Boyd and maybe a few others.

At the same time, if we beat Souths IMO the Sharks are most likely to finish in fourth place, which would be a pretty big incentive for us to push for first place.

The thinking being that the Sharks are easy beats ha ha.....

In the finals, we will play one of Chooks, Cowboys, Souffs, Storm, Dogs or Sharks. Hmmm... that's an almost tough choice.

It's solid thinking.
EDIT: Flaming

Any team that can beat the Rabbitohs and the Bulldogs is a competent team but any team that can beat the premiership leaders Sydney Roosters and favouritestwicein the same season and prove it's no fluke by beating the Cowboys twiceas well deserves to be considered as a genuine threat.

Of course WB would consider it an easy win, he'd probably just field a few reggies and save his big guns for the 'hard' teams.

You've really just made our point for us. The reason you are citing wins over the Roosters and Cowboys twice is because they are the two hardest teams to beat. So when the choice is between the two hardest teams to beat, or the team that's beaten those two hardest teams twice, there is one option that is clearly preferable.

Struggling with that a little, not sure where the logic is located. I looks to me that it could be argued both ways. We couldn't beat the Cows twice or the Roosters twice either but Cronulla could so you could contend that Cronulla is a very tough team who as proven ,can beat anyone at anytime. That would mean they would be very hard to beat. We only met them once for a hard fought 8 point win.

I actually cited four teams, all of whom are top end teams and all of them beaten by Cronulla. Once again it shows that the Sharks are hard to beat and I actually think are going to be harder to beat in the semis. They are grinding out wins without the Fifitas and I don't really care what people's opinion of them is, they have been great in the second half of the season ( despite being a pair of knobheads ) I've seen Fifita, the good one ,win games almost singlehandedly and he and his brother will be back for the semis, owing the club and fans big time. I hope we don't run into the Sharks early. Much better the Cows with both their front rowers suffering neck injuries.

What were the team rosters of the fantastic teams they beat on the night they beat them?

They are playing well, no doubt about it.

But if I had the option of playing the Sharks in round 1 at Suncorp, with a win leading to a week three final at home after a week off, I would take that option over any and every other option the finals are likely to produce.

Err, what ? They beat them twice each, you know Thurston blokes like that, teams one and three, they beat them with whoever plays for them. Really Nashy, it's pretty simple stuff, you search team lists etc, surprised you don't know how to look up stuff on the net.

Shit, I'd rather the busted arse Cowboys with dodgy front rowers and piss poor away from home records. Besides, I've got the Sharks at 66:1 with $50 on them so...actually although I can't lose now they are in the semis I just wouldn't be confident in any team beating them, maybe Melbourne who might sneak up on everyone. However, we might bundle them out of the semis in the seasons last game.

Whatever, all you guys and gals can't think as you please, I think the Sharks would be an awful opponent but hey, you might all be right and they may just get easily rolled at Suncorp.

Both times they beat the Roosters the Roosters were either at full strength or close to. Once without JWH and once with him in. Otherwise pretty much at full strength. Unsure about the Cows.

Updated: checked the Cows lineups, once without Thurston and once with him in. Other than that, pretty much their best teams both times.
