THE sweet potato diet that has helped Adam Blair become an elite forward is spreading through the Broncos.
Blair, arguably the NRL’s fittest prop, is strict with his diet, with his cheat meal being a grilled chicken burger once a week.
The habits that have made him one of the code’s hardest working props are catching on at Red Hill.
It is an example of Blair’s leadership qualities which the club will need during the State of Origin period when Brisbane’s senior players will be on Maroons duty.
Young prop Joe Ofahengaue watches what Blair eats to improve his own diet.
“He’s a good example. He brings his own lunch to work so I get to see what he eats and I can learn off that,” Ofahengaue said.
“I saw he eats a lot of sweet potato.
“For three weeks I jumped on a sweet potato and fish diet after seeing him eat it.”
Blair’s wife Jess is a nutritionist and the Blair family live a health-conscious lifestyle.
Blair is also not drinking alcohol this year.
“It is a lifestyle I choose to live. I make some sacrifices each year,” he said.
“We work so hard to make sure we are ready to go for each game and having the right diet is part of that.
“I am not telling people what to do but if they think they can get something out of it, that’s good.
“Joe has come a long way over the last year. He’s getting more minutes now and playing good footy and he’s going to be a real good player for a number of years.”
Blair credited his wife for ensuring he does not break from his diet.
“She keeps me on track and I keep her on track. It is a lifestyle we choose as a family,” he said.
“I am off pasta, pizza. Not gluten free but you choose the right food.
“Growing up, they tell you to load up on carbs for football but there are other ways of getting just the good carbs in.
“I choose to ignore the bad food.
“Every now and then I might have something different, not pizza or pasta but maybe a burger.
“A grilled chicken burger or something. That is a little treat for me.
“I still try and make sure it is not too bad.
“I think it will help me long term.”
The Broncos host the last placed Newcastle Knights this Saturday night, a game they should win comfortably. But Blair said his team was well below their best.
“The next month will show where we are,” he said.
“We have the Knights and Rabbitohs coming up and then the rep stuff starts. We are going all right.”
