Broncos V Newcastle post match talk

I don't know what it looked like on TV, but being at the game and seeing that effort really did piss me off.

Lockyer's 300th game, so you think the boys would want to win it for their captain. Obviously not.

There was no desire, no passion, no enthusiasm out there.

The rain was absolutely atrocious, absolutely pounding down. Still, both teams had to contend with the conditions and as others mentioned earlier, the Knights adjusted their gameplan and succeeded, so credit to them.

Steve Michaels has to go.

Majority of our forwards went missing as well IMO.

I haven't seen it on TV so perhaps i'm wrong on a few things, not sure.

Why is taylor playing for comets? He is head and shoulders above Mcguire and Wapau, there must be more to the story than 'he needs miles in his legs'. Folau has to play left centre, michaels is bringing nothing to the team.

Apar from that I think we can write this game off as beaten by mother nature.

soft and not willing to do the hard work

pretty much sums up tonight

I've only seen the highlights in about 2 minute reel but didn't the Big D put in. I can think of a couple of players that wouldn't have bothered chasing that intercept all the way to cut off the conversion attempt.

What a legend. CROAK! GASP!

Not getting enough from either of our hookers at the moment IMO.

No spark at all in and around the ruck.

Quick PTB's and offloads are a must, we concede way too many in defence!

Played pretty poorly considering the conditions. We were ill disciplined towards the end of the first half and that is how Newcastle skipped away to what would turn out to be an unassailable lead. Need to get that right in the coming weeks!

Just didn't play smart at all tonight, which is a shame considering the occasion.

Overall we just cant seem to win 4 in a row lolz....we will win another 3 on the trot starting next week.

On a side note I thought it was great how the Knights made a presentation to Locky for his 300th. Absolute legend!

I saw most of the second half after the delayed half time. I don't understand why locky was shifting it wide so much? He knows that is not how to play wet weather footy, my guess is that he knew he coudln't play tight because the forwards were doing it tough or something. I have to say, The current Broncos team needs to know how to play wet weather footy, we do not look good in the rain.

Be interesting to see what Henjak does in response to what seems to be a sad but glaring reality with Michaels, sad, because Michaels DOES have the skills.

Maybe he really is a winger more than a centre.

And maybe playing it wide so much means we're fixated on our star backline too much at the expense of what's as important - consolidating the middle.

From what I have read here & not having seen the match, our problem of Marker Defence has, after many seasons, still not been properly addressed.

The 2 top sides have beaten us now - which is the real test of our mettle and not the other somewhat shaky wins we've had.

It's far enough into the season for Henjak to really stamp his authority on the team and address the now clear weaknesses that have emerged after 6 rounds.

Oh - and bring back Taylor. [eusa_clap.gi

The match against the Dogs will be the next most telling test.

That was a really disappointing performance. Once again failing to lock up the ball and our marker defence really cost us. Although it was early on, the penalty against Kenny on the fifth tackle was a real momentum shifter. I'll give Kenny the benefit of the doubt because he's had the flu, but every time he made a tackle he was struggling to get to marker and De Gois saw this and scooted. If I were Henjack I'd be getting a tape of De Gois's game and showing it to young McCullough.

I think the longer half time break benefited us moreso than them, but we were always going to struggle chasing down so many points in those conditions. The penalty that got them out to 14 points ahead should have gone to us because it was an incorrect play the ball that caught the markers off side. While it probably didn't matter in the overall scheme of things, I think that knowing we had to then score three tries contributed to the shifting of the ball sideways.

Just didn't turn up. Simple as that, really. Don't think the boys took the challenge seriously - our performance was almost a carbon copy of the one we displayed against the Dragons a few weeks ago.

Not too concerned, really. Any team in this competition will get beaten by almost any other if they show up and play 10 percent below their best. Ho-hum.

There was something about some of the players having the flu earlier in the week aye? Same kinda scenario before the Dragons game? cant remember..In any case their display on field was subpar.

The weather switched the gameplan for both teams, and the Knights switched on to it whilst Broncos brainchilds like Lockyer continued to shift it wide or wallace and those short passing in and out, and play as if it was dry..! just watching that and wondering why are you doing that?? its wet!

Before it rained we looked awesome, pressuring their D and scoring our lone try, once it poured down, different story..

agreed on showing our hookers a tape of De Gois' game, pretty much the same Ennis did to other teams for us lastyear..up the guts

So...is it worth watching the replay on Fox Sports today? I missed the game last night.

Kudos to Tee texting me the updates though. :D

Turn it off after Izzy's try.

Haha I just saw Izzy's try...that was awesome.

It's all been said, I had just hoped they would've been on song for locky. Next week is another game and I would hope they would try a little harder in defence OR it will be another bad day out.

i did notice that the play the balls from newcastle were good. allbeit may be outlawed soon. it seemed every step our markers took to get onside they were pushed out of the way by the person playing the ball running straight forward after it had been played. therefore not allowing our players to get straight in line and being constantly offside and ineffective.

wonder if there is some sort of rule about that or if it is another thing that will be gotten away with until the rule is written. that being said we still played like it was dry and thus all the errors and times we were taken out over the sideline.

I'm dissappointed but not gutted. We have a very young team and we are going to have the odd bad game. The main problem IMO is defence. 44 missed tackles, 24 ineffective tackles and Newcastle got 17 offloads out of a total tackle count of about 310 so a rough calulation thats a missed or ineffectual tackle or offload in around 1 out of 4. Teams just seem to be able to off load at will against us and have done for the past few years. Peter Ryan seems to have done nothing to combat this.
The main offenders this time were
McCullough 7
Glenn 6
Wallace 5
Hunt, Kenny, Michaels 4
Parker & Wapau 3

Next week is Manly and we don't want to play them into form.
