Broncos v Raiders - Spoilers

One thing I would demand if I was at the NRL Coach's conference would be the abolition of dominant and surrender tackles. Just make it so every tackle, as soon as it's held, there has to be an effort to get off the tackled player. I don't mean Super League 1997 style where you literally had to be off the second they called held, but at least visibly attempting to untangle yourself.

I just hate it. It's one of the worst rule introductions rugby league has had.

As for the game, nothing to write home about. Handling and attack was abysmal, defence was excellent. Broncos clearly put the cue in the rack when they led 22-6. Still, lots of work to do on handling before Saturday.

Titans are easy enough to beat - just need to put them under pressure when they have the ball, thus taking away their room to move, and they won't score. But you can't afford to keep giving them possession.

Garbage, it didn't matter what kind of tackle it was Campese was laying all over the play the ball. The Radiers play the balls were a mile faster than the Broncos ones. Campese is the most over-rated footballer on the planet.

Have to agree. Surrender or dominant, he just sat there, not even looking like getting up.

And yes, Campese is a massive douche.

Glad we won, but pretty scrappy. Poor completion rate (27/42) and our backs dropped a lot of ball. Locky was a little off. Twice in the first 10 minutes he was caught with the ball on the last tackle. He does it too often. His passes were shocking. Wallace had a bit of a shocker too.

Our forwards were great, and our kick chase was great. Great to see dropouts increasing.

Too many errors which we need to fix.

+1 to what Coxy said. Last night was pitiful, aside from the 15-odd minutes after half time in which we put on those three tries. How many farking handling errors did we put on in the last 10 or so? Woeful.

That being said, the whole night actually looked to me like the Broncos were concentrating on getting the basics right, rather than really winning the game through scoring tries. Our defence was extremely solid and our kick-chase was MARVELLOUS! Makes me wonder if they actually went out there with the mindset of grinding out a win through getting those little things right, and not worrying about anything else.

Honestly, our handling can't be that bad next week or else we'll get done. But if we fix up our attack just a little and keep that same kick-chase, we'll beat 'em by 20.

big bad dave taylor kept getting bundled out by little weeds.....wtf...why wouldnt you do a quick step inside as they are coming in for the tackle ...............

Pure physics. At his pace and size, if he'd tried stepping in field he would've torn a hole in the earth's crust and the stadium would've been engulfed in liquid magma.

mmm yeah i see your point ......... icon_thumbs_u

The thing that annoyed last night was Canberra parking a third player on top of surrender or dominant tackles. At the very least the third player in should have to move straight away, then the tackled player would have a chance to fight his way up.

Another thing that needs sorting is the advantage rule from a dropped ball.

Taylor dropped the ball in the mid field last night Tongue picked it up then offloaded to Harrison who passed it to ground and Monas played at it with his foot. The ref called advantage taken which personally I agree with but they have clearly stated unless you advance the ball 10m past where you got it then there is no advantage.

The refs need to make it crystal clear what they will rule, FFS it is not a grey area lets hope they don't complicate this rule too.

And Chuck Norris would have fallen over.

I remember a when we played the Titans last year at skilled, when Hodges did that late throw on Mat Rogers, they played advantage, the Titans advanced the ball 80m but failed to score, so the ref took the play back to where the Dangerous throw happened and penalised Hodges for it. WTF [icon_shru

The 10m advancement I'm certain applies only to off side play. It's always been considered an advantage if you pick up a loose ball and successfully dispose of it (the player who picks it up that is). ie, if you pick it up and kick it deliberately, or pick it up and get tackled, or pick it up and pass it to a support player and they catch it.

The only exception is if the ball has gone 10m or so towards your own try line and when you're tackled you're not in line with where the actual knock on happened. In which case they pack the scrum.

Plus Foordy, I think foul play is treated differently again.

I think the highlight reel they show of Taylors career after the game must contain every try he ever scored. Probably a better clip then Hunts.

Yeah I agree with you Coxy, but the refs boss was interviwed on Fox a few weeks back and they made it clear about the 10 m interpretation, that is why Tongue was questioning the ruling for so long last night.

Yes well they don't allow cameras in public toilets.

One of the more scrappier games this year save the first 25 mins which was sensational.

Great game Taylor. Sad to see him leaving us when he's performing this well. A good result seeing as we didn't sustain any injuries. All is in ready for this Saturday.

except in origin a few years ago, NSW did a high tackle that wasn't picked up until after the ball was played, (i think vid ref tipped the on field ref off) and the said in commentary that since the tackle had been completed and play had continued on after that they couldn't go back 2 or 3 tackles to penalize for the high shot and all they could do is put the guy on report. but i spose they could have been wrong in that origin match [icon_shru

Yeah it's funny. Touch judges can give advantage longer. If they notice something they can note it, and at the end of the set run in and notify the referee and award the penalty.

It's inconsistent.

Understatement of the year.

I personally think if you go a couple of passes trying to get the advantage and you stuff it up by your poor skills etc then your advantage is over

Totally agree.

But what shocked me (well, not really) about the knock on/advantage thing with the Raiders last night was that Campese was doing everything he can from then to give away a penalty so he could have a go at the ref.

I fucking hate players that don't just cop a decision, even if they don't agree with it, and get on with the game. Shits me.
