After taking Under 18 State of Origin by storm in a man-of-the-match performance Brisbane sensation Xavier Coates is set to cap his spectacular rise with an international call-up.
Foxsports.com.au has learned that Coates is being monitored for a Papua New Guinea debut following his exploits in the Queensland Cup and in the colours of the junior Maroons.
Despite having not played an NRL game for the Broncos, the Kumuls hierarchy are understood to have discussed handing Coates a debut cap and have inquired about his availability.
Comfortable anywhere across the three-quarter line, Coates qualifies for PNG through his mother and has been mentioned as a potential option for the Kumuls in next week’s Pacific Test blockbuster with Samoa at Leichardt Oval.
An international debut would complete a rollercoaster few months for Coates who only recently turned 18.
After making his senior debut in the Queensland Cup three weeks ago with Tweed Seagulls by scoring two tries, Coates was instrumental in the Under 18 Maroons demolition of New South Wales at Suncorp last week.
Playing alongside Sam Walker, who today signed for the Roosters, Coates was named man of the match.
Managed by respected player agent Nash Dawson, Coates is expected to sign a contract upgrade from the Broncos in the coming weeks.
Would be a great experience for him.
